Casceil | 2728 comments I reread The Owl & Moon Cafe The Owl & Moon Cafe by Jo-Ann Mapson by Jo-Ann Mapson. My new review of it is here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I have some questions about how to score it. I know four words count, and I think the fifth (cat) is arguable.

Owl is in the title, and there are owls in the book, in the barn where the school girls work on their science project.

Moon is last name of the main characters, and also in the name of the book.

Wine-several glasses are drunk at various times in the book. The most note-worthy is on Thanksgiving, when one of the main characters get deliberately drunk on wine and is nasty to her mother.

Cat - This one I am not sure about. There are cats in the barn along with the owls, but we don't actually meet any of them. The youngest of the main characters tells her grandfather that she has always wanted a cat, and thinks she would like to have an orange cat. But she doesn't get a cat in this book, so the barn cats are pretty much it.

Boat -- One of the main characters falls in love with a man named Fergus, who lives on a boat. The couple spends time on his boat.

Genre is probably chick-lit.

Book is between 300 and 400 pages.

Observances: poetry is quoted. How much red does there have to be? There is a red banner line across the bottom of the cover.

Assuming everything discussed above counts, here is how I would score it:
All five words: 10 points
Genre: 3 points
Pages: 3 points
Observances: 6 points.

Total: 22 points. If Janice disallows anything, I will adjust my score accordingly.

If the only mention in the book for "hawk" is what you quoted, I would be reluctant to accept it. For one, it is a verb. When you look at the pairing "hawk or owl", I would have thought a noun was the intention. However, I think it's easy enough for you to apply the H to King Henry and still count it that way.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Janice,

I had thought we were matching words rather than nouns. I'll edit my post to match H in hawk to the character Henry once I'm home.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments No, don't apologize. It's all so dang confusing isn't it. Sometimes we tell you to go knock yourselves out in the interpretation and the next time, you're expected to be literal. I try to be as specific as possible when I write a challenge, but it's so hard to know what is going to be problematic and needs to be addressed. And with this group.... you are all so analytical. I love this group for that very reason. It just makes writing challenges a real challenge.

Lori (glitzyrebel) | 444 comments Wedding the Widow
Totally missed it on actually having any words mentioned. I thought for sure the woman would use sugar or apples to made a pie, drink wine at the wedding, walk underneath a moonlit sky or speak of living in the country.

If I have scored something that doesn't count please let me know:

Country = C for Charlotte, the Widow who was Wed
Wine = W for Wilbur, Charlotte's deceased husband
Apple = A for Augustus who Wed the Widow
Sugar = S for Sophia, the Wed Widows best friend
Moon = Mapletown, the town nearest where the Wife became a Widow and then was Wed.

If this counts as having all 5 words then that's
10 points

Pages 200

The only one giving me problems is Wine. The only times you can use first letters is a character name or a location in the book. Here's where it's detailed about how to use the words.

So I calculate 13 points. Sorry, Lori

Yes, you can substitute. LOL!

message 20: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments I've noticed that there are some problems in interpreting how to use your words.

The only time you can use the first letter is for a character's name or location name.

The reason for this is that it's easy enough to find the exact word in a title or an author's name, but it's not always so easy to find it in a character's name or a location.

That means Tasha, Esther, and Ronyell need to assign their word to something else, or adjust their totals. Please edit your scoring messages.

Sorry!

message 21: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments Tammy wrote: "Is there a specific place to find the genre listings on Good reads?"

Sort of. The book page lists the genres based on how readers are shelving them. They are pretty subjective, because there are often differing opinions about the book's genre. Use that as a guideline as long as a significant number of people shelve it the same. If 1000 out of 5000 readers shelve a book as mystery and 10 shelve as romance, I'd reject romance as being insignificant.

Sugar
Boat
Wine
Moon
Dog

My book was Tryst by Elswyth Thane which I read before I saw the points system, which makes the some of the points I earned just CRAZY.

8 pts - 4 words
Sugar--Sabrina is a main character
Boat--Takes place in Britain
Moon--Specfically in the Mendip Hills
Dog--there is an evil little dog in the tale

There might have been wine, but I don't remember and don't have access to the book, so I will assume there is no wine.
