Any and all comments, questions, etc regarding VOLUME ONE (chapters 1-18) of Emma! Please avoid any spoilers!

What do you think so far? Do you like/hate the characters/writing style/plot?

It's a little slow so far, but that might just be me getting back into the writing style, especially after a week of reading fast-paced plots.

I think the best part so far is the characters! Sure Emma is a bit silly, but that's the point, and why I love her!

It's an early 19th century love story, so the story is predictable, and if you've seen the movie Clueless, then you know the plot anyway, but reading Jane Austen isn't so much about the plot as it is the characters, the love story, and the beautifully crafted stories.

April Sarah | 4 comments Emma is such a weirdly layered character that sometimes I want to shake some sense into her and at others I wonder when she suddenly got so wise. The way she manages her father shows such wisdom but then the way she makes assumptions about other people's lives and behaviors shows the exact opposite.

This is going to be an interesting journey.

YES! She's so complex and it's refreshing to see a young female character with that many layers.

J. (jellybeanlegs) I just finished volume 1 and YAAAAY, I thought Mr Elton too pompous and all high in his senses, a bit of a Mr Collins from Pride and Prejudice, but not as funny. So glad he's leaving haha
I also felt the need to search for movie and tv adaptations and I had a hard time not spoiling myself. I have my ideas of how will this go but I'm not so sure as to want to know just yet who she'll end up with.

I'm loving it so much

Caitlin (bookchats) | 3 comments Jelly, when you get to the end do consider the 2010 (?) BBC mini series adaptation and the YouTube modernization (Emma Approved)!

This was my third attempt at Emma and I found that having finally found a few adaptations I liked and watched them I was actually able to push through this first, somewhat slow bit.

UGHHHHH Mr. Elton. That's more or less all I'll say on that matter. I didn't realize quite how obsessed with class Emma is though.
