When I'm done traveling I'll review it as I read it a few months back. I hope people find it as compelling as I did.
Emma wrote: "Once you get into it it's very gripping. I intended on only reading for an he this morning and ended up reading the entire morning away."So glad you are finding it hard to put down.
Emma, I have read and enjoyed your review. I am about 50 pages in(my kindle edition does not have pages--13%). The first 50 pages were a bit of a slog.
I also found it difficult to get into. Unfortunately the book felt that way for me all the way through. The writing felt very dispassionate to me. Sometimes that works in a novel but for some reason, in this one it did not.
I am currently up to page 100. I liked the way the book introduced the different characters and didn't find the beginning too bad.
My son showed me this youtube segment about chenobyl. I found it quite interesting as it gave me an idea of what the town looked like and its size. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DWnj...
I'm a good ways through this and am quite enjoying it. The roughness of Russian ways is obscene but believable unfortunately. My aunt was heavily involved in the Chernobyl children's project once upon a time, taking in a new group of children every year, fundraising etc. She even named her daughter after one of the kids she met in her ventures. We even had two kids over to stay with us for 2 weeks a couple of years ago. It's a topic my family are all invested in; I'll pass the book to my mother once I'm done.
