I read this book years ago, maybe 20 years or so? I'm sure it involved Plain Jane or Jane in the title but have never managed to find it again. It was about a plain jane sort of girl who doesn't have much going for her. Then she becomes a pen-pal to a prisoner and she starts to change her life (new clothes, makes friends, new job etc). the book needs when he is coming out of prison (by now they have a sort of romance going on by mail only) and she has totally turned her life around - ends with him literally about to walk in the door. It was light stuff but I liked it and wouldn't mind reading it again! Anyone who knows the name, I'd be grateful!

Yes in that it has a positive effect on her life but you don't actually meet him ( although he sounds pleasant) until the end when he us just about to arrive. So in a way it's almost a romance with herself because it's about her transformation rather than him as such but he is the trigger for it.

What crime did he commit?
How long are they pen pals?
Can you tell us more about the heroine - her job, background, family, personality, etc.?
I can't swear to UK or US. Think it was a city, like London perhaps. He had committed some kind of not too serious crime (definitely not violent or sexual) and seemed very repentant and wanting to start his life again as I recall. They are pen pals quite a while, maybe a year? while she transformed her life. She does little things like he asks for a photo of her and she has a new haircut to look nice on the photo etc (just an example) and then that makes her feel more confident in how she looks, etc. He's a kind of trigger for her to change her own life (as in by the end it almost wouldn't matter if he didn't turn out to be that interesting because she's made her own life better anyway.).

Great! You gave a good description. And, good job on remembering the title had the words Plain and/or Jane in it.
