Book Design Problems

In truth, if you use Scrivener for your writing program you can create a .mobi that is high quality and completely customized to your book without knowing any coding at all. It takes a lot of trial and error messing with settings to get it done, but once you learn how it's not that difficult.
Alternatively, I offer affordable formatting services including images and custom design elements, if you'd rather not do it yourself.
This is the problem: he sent me the story, with the additions, as a Mobi file. When I uploaded it to Kindle, the text appeared very small, and the Kindle option to change the font size was gone. Is there not some way to add the borders/designs and the book still behave like normal?
Also, for my next book, I want to include a few small, simple illustrations throughout. I'm sure there will be problems with this as well.
Can anyone shed some light?
