As my review mentioned, I had tried to read this some time ago, but could not finish it, due to anxiety and over-sensitivity, stemming from my own situation at the time. I am so glad I made myself go back to it (thanks reading challenge), and this time to finish it. It is very good literature in that the prose is beautiful, evocative, delicate and stark by turns, and illuminates the people in an area and a time with a lit-torch intensity.
