Teresa (teresatheterrible) Me too...just finished book one on my way home from work (an audiobook, of course). I'm super pumped to start the second, like, now. Which is precisely what I'm gonna do after I'm done playing on Goodreads for a few minutes.

Are we doing this 'un via some sort of schedule, of free for all, beware of spoilers, shoot from the hip style? Either way is A-OK by me! Just lemme know!

Happy reading, buddies!

Netanella | 2108 comments I'm halfway through the chapter "Tower of Charles", and enjoying the return of our narrator to good health after the frying he received at the end of the first book. He's on another rescue mission, this time to collect a family of survivors who left a note he discovered after a foray mission to the Hobby airport.

Has anyone noticed if our narrator has a name?

message 6: by Yammy (new)

Yammy | 177 comments No name still but that doesn't really bother me.

message 7: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresatheterrible) I finished the first 5 chapters today, for what that matters (some idea of where I'm at in comparison to you guys, I guess). I LOVED how it picked up like nothing stopped (because, hey- it really didn't!). I can see us reading the 3rd before its all done and said with! By the by...his short Grey Fox is free on Audible. I haven't listened yet, but I believe its either a prequel or it comes after the last book or something. Which makes me wonder...how many books ARE there???
~Teresa~

message 8: by Yammy (new)

Yammy | 177 comments as many as he gets paid for, lol. permuted press likes to motivate their authors with $$$ to keep up a suscessful series.

I heard his last book didn't do so well though. No spoilers yet guys, i JUST cracked this puppy open today. i like the fact that there isn't a long-winded backstory to get us caught up and i like how it feels like we didn't lose any time since the first book.

as in "four years later..."

message 9: by Yammy (new)

Yammy | 177 comments oh and i think march's botm is going to flop. what a weird selection to pick from... none of the books look good to me.

since i feel that way, i am up for reading his third book after we finish this one. they can keep their space opera or whatever the fake alt accounts voted on in march.

message 10: by Thia (new)

Thia (thial) | 133 comments Grey Fox is after the third book.

No spoilers - but if any of you do get to the third book I would love to discuss it too. I've got questions and confusion...

As to the second- I liked the pick up where we left off too. Poor noname needed a little break to recuperate!

message 11: by Thia (new)

Thia (thial) | 133 comments BTW I can't believe I didn't notice it the first time through but I don't think he ever gets a name that I can remember. A nickname comes along later...

message 12: by Sara (new)

Sara | 94 comments I can't remember when he starts being "Kil"/Kilroy. Maybe not until book 3 when the narrative is no longer based on the protagonist's POV...
I don't recall noticing his prolonged anonymity my first time through, either.

message 13: by Yammy (new)

Yammy | 177 comments The third book shifts POV? Oh man no wonder it didnt do as well

message 14: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresatheterrible) So then at this time there are 3 books? I know he has another series too, right?
Anywho, I think my favorite part about this book is our 'no name's' voice. I find myself laughing at all his 'jokes.' Like how the Davis family was drinking 'Freshly Squeezed Louisiana Blanket Water' for weeks. Like...I know that's not funny, but at least he still has a sense of humor, right? I think that would be one of the *only* things keeping me going. And I think he is so in tune with his journal because he doesn't have anyone else. Even John at least has Annabell (until Laura comes along, at least lol). But I most certainly think we will see lots more interaction between him and Tara. Or do you think perhaps the reason he doesn't mention her more is because of his fear of rejection or getting close to another person during such dire times?

message 15: by Yammy (new)

Yammy | 177 comments I'll let you know tonight when I get deeper into it.

message 16: by Netanella (new)

Netanella | 2108 comments I'm up to the point where our nameless narrator has rescued a group of Marines, and now has "outted" himself as an officer in order to protect his base at Hotel 23. Still really enjoying this read and his "voice."

So, his lack of a name - since it's his journal, it kind of makes sense. I mean, if you are going to talk to your self, you would say, ahem, "Self, I told you ..." ;)

As to the lack of romance - I hope we do not have any interaction between him and Tara. Too much going on for him to be distracted by such shenanigans. IMHO. He's got two kids, a dog, a grandma, and now a bunch of Marines.

message 17: by Netanella (new)

Netanella | 2108 comments "Kilroy was here. Check the fridge."

Oddly, I feel so much better now.

message 18: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresatheterrible) What page or percentage or chapter is that in? Surely I didn't miss it,although now that I know what his name is, it doesn't matter anyway! Just curious! o_O

message 19: by Yammy (new)

Yammy | 177 comments okay i am surprised to find out that there is still some government left.

***slight spoilers, don't read unless at least 50% done*****

i'm near the end of this bad boy now and i'm at the part where he managed to get hismelf stranded far away from the silo.

he's on his way back now and gettign help from ANOTHER military force (remote six bravo or something).

so far here is wha i am liking: the action - this book has tons of it and it keeps me guessing. i guess since the miltary is always painted so dark in most zombie books, it's refreshing to see them as actual humans. although at the start when the marines tried to take over the silo was sort of a dick move, for the most part these guys seem pretty good considering their entire country fell apart.

thank god there is not getting overbearing with the love story aspect. IMHO, if I wanted a love story I'd read one of Netanella's vampire romance books - not a SHTF zombie book. ;)

i missed the kilroy part though, unless i skimmed past it.

anyway, what does everyone think so far?

About 60% through, trying to get back to Hotel 23 but before he meets up with Saien.

Kilroy's not really his name, but at least he's no longer "nameless narrator" to me. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilroy_w...

Netanella | 2108 comments Yammy wrote: "anyway, what does everyone think so far..."

I finished today - couldn't put it down once ol' 'Kilroy' got his groove on with the Marines. I was slightly bored with the first 1/3 of the book - repetition of the first book. I enjoyed the character of Dean, the tough-as-nails Texas bat, or grandma, and wished she hadn't been relegated to the school house once things became militarized. I'd have liked to see more of her character being developed.

I really truly enjoyed our hero's arduous return to Hotel 23, first solo and then accompanied by Saien, our potentially al Quaida Afghan freedom fighter. I thought the supply drops of weapons, satphones, buggies, foods, etc., was a little too "manna from Heaven", but then again, I know how to suspend disbelief. After all, I read vampire romance ;)

AND, I'm particularly intrigued with the ending transmission regarding CHANG. Yup, yup, one of my favorite movies is John Carpenter's "The Thing". I can hear the opening sequence now.

message 22: by Yammy (new)

Yammy | 177 comments didn't finish it but i will by tonight. the uav part made sense to me but it makes me wonder just who all is left out there.

I love his voice and jokes too. There is a lot of little ironic dark funny slipped in here and there and that one in particular made me laugh out loud.

Me too! I found her such a breath of fresh air after the other female characters so far. I would love to have much more of her in book four. She does pop around in book 3 a bit but just little snips :(

message 25: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresatheterrible) DAYAM! You guys! I stopped after chapter 5 'cause everyone else said they just started and then I read The Death Race (that series started off good, but is REALLY tough to get through...). Anyhow, looks like I'll be huffin' and a puffin' to catch up! Well...there's no 'catching up.' Its way too late for me! What happened to never leave a man behind, guys?!?! :-P

message 26: by Thia (new)

Thia (thial) | 133 comments These books sucked me in plus I'm cheating - audiobooks - but take your time. Too good to rush!

message 27: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresatheterrible) I'm listening at times, too lol. I love Audible cause I can double the speed when solely listening and triple the speed if I'm reading along, but the books I get from my library's digital lending site isn't so flexible...SUPER SLOW narrator :-( Oh well! Its been slow at work this A.M. so I've made it slightly past the 50% mark in just a couple hours between customers. I think I should be done either later tonite or by tomorrow nite, at least. And I'd love to read the third, too...I'm just not so sure I wanna read it IMMEDIATELY after the second...
I'm TOTALLY stuck in the middle of SEVERAL series now. Got 1 1/2 left in the Maze Runner trilogy (which is actually 4 books...), I'm halfway through the 3rd in the Vampire Academy books, plus several other series that I'm one to two books into. I need to at least finish the Maze Runner books and the 2 Vampire Academy books I have on e-loan from my library before even THINKING about the 3rd in this series. Still....maybe March? I don't know what books are on the poll, but I doubt I'll do the BOTM. I guess we'll just see what happens!
But for what it's worth, I am LOVING me some Day by Day, and I *will* finish this series! (It helps with the genre challenge, too! And speaking of challenges, that's yet ANOTHER thing I gotta schedule in...the zombie shorts! So yeah...the rest of February is COMPLETELY booked- no pun intended when I typed that, but it IS a pretty good one...)
Happy reading, all!!!

Mike | 48 comments I hope you guys discuss book 3, Shattered Hourglass as it's a bit unclear what happened and why.

message 30: by Thia (new)

Thia (thial) | 133 comments Mike - I had the same problem. The last 20 minutes of book three left me completely perplexed.

message 31: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresatheterrible) Good lord...I STILL haven't finished :'( Work has been CRAZY lately. I have the next 3 days off, though, and in addition to finishing this one, I plan on finishing the 3 OTHER books I'm in the middle of, too! LOL...and my new year's resolution was actually to only read ONE book at a time. Pffftt...that didn't last long!!! Hopefully, we CAN read book 3, like maybe towards the first week or so of March? Lemme know if you guys are down for some more Day by Day...
By the by...you guys have any thoughts, favorite quotes, scenes, etc. I am currently at 78%, so I'm going to TRY and finish tonite while I'm lying down for sleep, but I read several less than enthusiastic reviews on this one and yet I find it absolutely riveting! I love the 'ten percent' & his pet names for them. I also thought his 'special night' when he finally *ahem* 'consummated' his relationship with Tara was kinda cool...or at least the way he described it (i.e., he didn't, which made his journal seem that much more a record for posterity and since sex isn't really relevant, we don't see it. I dunno, I guess I just have a lot to say about this book/series so far. I haven't read any of your reviews 'cause I don't want spoilers, but *fingers crossed* hopefully tonite is the nite.
Anyway, I am sure I'd have finished by now, but the epileptic fits have made me sleep a lot lately and while resting in bed and NOT being able to look at my Kindle or really focus to read, I've become slightly addicted to the show Hannibal. Has anyone else watched that? Thoughts?
Now...do I watch Hannibal & read, or wait until tomorrow for more Hannibal??? Choices, choices...
~Teresa~

message 32: by Yammy (new)

Yammy | 177 comments i never watched that show. you have to understand that most of the bad reviews on this book are troll/fake accounts that were used to bring this book down in the ratings.

i hear book three really isn't that great though - for real.

message 33: by Thia (new)

Thia (thial) | 133 comments I loved book three - it brought in new characters that I really liked. In fact I really liked it more than book two - except the last 20 minutes or couple of chapters left me completely confused. I re-listened no less than five times and I'm still at a loss. Hopefully the next book will explain wtf but it was anticlimactic considering how much I enjoyed it right up to the end.

message 34: by Netanella (new)

Netanella | 2108 comments well, it sounds like we should line up book 3 for the next buddy read, just to figure out what the last 20 minutes of the book are all about...

message 35: by Yammy (new)

Yammy | 177 comments it got me curious. i liked the ending to this one, although i didn't think an explanation about the start of the virus was needed. it was just cool to have.
