SOLVED. Alternate version of Catholic society with a clone slave class. [s]

The city it is based in is based on Venice (lot's of canals). The slaves can be customized to the new owner's needs (for sex, work, living fixtures etc) A certain group tries to clone the books version of Jesus, he is referred to as "Christos". The slave clones rebel I think, that's where things get fuzzy.

Doubt it, read it decades ago, found it in a local library. Sci-fi story, only really remember a quote from the end "Men made you for pleasure but God made you an artist"
