Zoe Damsel | 2 comments The story takes place in Africa. I think the book takes place before the automobile.
A man is out riding his horse. He may have been a farmer or some type of landowner. He and his horse are viciously attacked by jackals. His faithful male employee finds him and perhaps puts the horse out of it's misery. The employee allows the man's dogs to lick the wounds on his face to facilitate healing. Then the employee crafts a mask from leather placing it on the mans wounded face and wets it to conform.

Needless to say there was a great more to this story; however that is all I have.
The book would have been written before 1970.

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments Zoe, did this fall into a specific genre? Mystery, fantasy, etc? Did the injury and leather mask play an important role in the book?

Remember anything about the cover?

Zoe Damsel | 2 comments I do not know what the genre is; I would guess historical fiction or mystery. This was read aloud to me as a child; but it was not a children's book. My Grand Mother read a great deal of fiction set in Africa. I do not recall the cover. I think for whatever reason his injuries prevented him form rejoining with wife. I think the remainder of the story may have involved him watching her life from a distance as she moved on after believing him to be dead. But there was more to it I just do not recall. It was not fantasy or sci fi.
