Okay ... here's the book cover bling so far:

Keep 'em coming! Don't mind if there's ketchup smears on the keyboard ... just save me some potato salad!

Not sure yet whether I'd give it an unqualified recommendation, but would love to have a discussion.

Minder Rising

by Carol Van Natta
.

Hey guys - I'd like to nominate my book for the Indie catagory. Timberwolf is Military Science-Fiction (With hints of politics and theology). It's sort of like Aliens + Apocalypse Now + Wizard of Oz. It's my first book and I am really proud of it. Feel a little awkward nominating my own book, but a guy's gotta hustle, especially as a first time author!
Here is the Timberwolf Goodreads profile.

Of course, this isn't a biased opinion. Not at all. Why would you say a thing like that? ;)

Haven't read this one yet, seen the movie, everyone seems to say it's a lot different.

Okay ... notes:
@ Jonathan - we did Zones of Thought as our series pick some time back, so unless Vernor Vinge comes out with a new book in the series, we've read those. I went with your second-pick, Newton's Wake.
@ R - yes ... you are allowed to nominate your own book for whatever category it qualifies for so long as you are an active member of the community. We use Random.org to pick a winner so it's kinda like sticking raffle tickets into a hat.
@ Greg - there are so few genuinely sci-fi books for kids and young adults out there that even a discussion of what could be done better is valuable.
@ Debbie - I put the first book in your series in as an Indie Pick as series read isn't up for nomination this month.
@ Tom - that's a gorgeous cover :-) Yeah ... this is the one time a month you get to raise your hand and say 'I wrote a book, too.'
@ Betsy - you'll turn us all into Honor Harrington addicts yet :-)
@ Rion - my understanding is the movie is very different from the book. Purportedly they've been trying to film a NEW version that would be a bit closer to the original intent.
Okay ... here's the updated book cover bling.

Keep 'em coming!

The Terrans by Jean Johnson
Biased towards this b/c I loved her Ia series so much. Plus since its the same universe...I gladly dived back in.
Indie:
The Elfrida Goto Trilogy
by Felix R. Savage
I've read the free novella and current on the 2nd book in that trilogy collection. Fun snarky space opera imho.
Young:
Edge Space: Memoir of a Teenage Starfighter Pilot
by Shad Callister
*Trying hard to find as much young sci fi as I can without OMG SO MUCH DYSTOPIA/ZOMBIES/CRAZY GOVT ROBOTS. :P

Favourite book, and a great entry point, is Startide Rising

The first book in the series is Sundiver, but it's self-contained. It is really Startide Rising you need to read to 'grok' the second trilogy.

and also nominate

I second BASILISK STATION. I love Honor Harrington.

I'd like to nominate The Legacy of Daddy: A Next You Universe Novel

And Annah

@ Fiannawolf - I HEAR you on the YA dystopia frustration!!! I've got two teenagers both currently in the whole Hunger Games / Divergent / Maze Runner phase. I like the books, but let's not kid ourselves that they're science fiction :-P
@ AndrewP - you can nominate ONE book for EACH category. Since On Basilisk Station and Kris Longknife are both Reader Picks, I plugged in your first one (both great books, btw). You can always nominate the other next month. This means you still have an Indie and YA-Friendly pick if you so choose.
@ Rion - some pretty racy stuff in Heinlein - not a book for kids. I read the book as a teenager, but most of the stuff went right over my head. They had the movie on TV, but I guess it was the censored version. So years later I BOUGHT the movie at a yard sale and it was like "OMG!!! How did I MISS that?"
@ Gene - I haven't read Uplift, but I like David Brin's writing. The Postman (his book, not the crappy movie starring Kevin Costner) is one of my favorite books. Any book that starts out with a guy brushing his donkey's teeth is okay by me :-)
@ V.L. - have you added your book to our Young Adult / Middle Grade Space Opera Listopias? It sounds like your book could be one or the other, so figure out which it belongs on and why not add it? I created them so teachers and stuff could find sci-fi books: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Also ... I added 'The Legacy of Daddy' and not 'Antiquity' for Indie Pick because you only get to nominate ONE in EACH CATEGORY. You can always nominate the other favorite next month!
Okay ... here is the updated cover bling!

I've been wondering about those! I've been reading a bunch of Hugh Howey's other post-apocalyptic works and have really enjoyed his writing in general. I'll have to check them out

It's that time of the month where we nominate what great Space Opera books we'd like to read as a group during the month of August. The following categories are up for grabs:
READER PICK: this is for a mass-market Space Opera book which is widely available in both paperback and ebook at most places where you'd be inclined to walk in off the street and get it, including bookstores and the public library. Dead trees is where it's at for the Reader Pick, but they can't be Kindle Unlimited locked in ebook.
INDIE PICK: this is for the newer, edgier space opera stories published by indie authors who go it all alone. Indie authors who use a micropress to help them do the publishing, but do all the editing and marketing themselves, are still considered indie.
YOUNG ADULT FRIENDLY PICK: We desperately need great sci-fi / space opera(ish) themed books to indoctrinate the young people in our lives to look to the stars. To qualify for a YA pick, it must have a space component to it (i.e., no earth-bound dystopia), must be labeled 'YA' on the online distributors and star a young protagonist who is age 17 and under throughout the story, and must have been published AFTER 1999 (i.e., NEW stuff that will appeal to kids TODAY).
And last but not least, our SERIES PICK continues with Book 2 of the galactic football league, The Starter by Scott Sigler. Put that baby on hold at your local library or order the ebook online.
So drop your nominations into the thread below! And periodically I'll come back to post the pretty book cover bling as I transpose the nominations into my spreadsheet. On August 1st I'll use Random.org to pick a winner in each category and send out an announcement to the group.
Be epic!

NOTE: Authors who are active members of the community are allowed to nominate their own books because we use Random.org to pick the winner. It's okay if you nominate your book more than a single month in a row, you just can't be featured twice.
