5.2 - Go. The game of Go originated in China and is most popular in China, Japan, and Korea. Read a book set in one of those countries. REQUIRED: If the location is not clear from the GR description, please explain in your post.

Since the official name is the Republic of China (as opposed to the People's Republic of China), we'll count a book set in Taiwan as a book set in "China."

if it's set in China, it fits the task.

Spring Grass: Born into New China, is a richly detailed account of the period of my life from early childhood to the beginning of the violence and uncertainty unleashed by the Cultural Revolution. I began my journey as a spirited child of a well-to-do family in Shanghai. The day when I started primary school, I learned that my first name, Qiyin, meant spring grass in Chinese, blessing me to be like grass, not as charming as flowers, but always to be alive and thriving. I became unusually bold for a girl. The book reveals the gradual changes to my life and to the lives of my family and friends as Mao Zedong issued directives for the new China. With the start of the Cultural Revolution, my older brother and I, both ardent believers in Mao's words and policies, joined the Red Guards to sweep away all vestiges of capitalism and the Four Olds: Old Customs, Old Culture, Old Habits, and Old Ideas. I found myself with the power to make life altering decisions about the lives of suspected traitors to the cause of class struggle, all the while a naive teenager struggling with the issues of adolescence.

sure, but since there's nothing in the GR description, be sure to state in your post that it takes place in Japan.

Sandi Barnes | 549 comments I'd like to read I'll Cross the River for this task. It takes place in China and in North Korea.

When the task description mentions Korea, is there a distinction between North Korea and South Korea? If so, and I find this is set predominately in North Korea and not China, will it not work for this task?

Thanks!!

doesn't matter which Korea, and if the book is set in only those 2 countries, it's going to work, since one of them has to be over half!

Sorry, Jenn Renee, I thought I answered this. If it's more than half set in China it works.

I don't think Cress will end up working for this task. I don't remember this one taking place in China like Cinder does. It's a great book, so I hope you find a fit for it.

Cinder is set in New Bejing, so it is China, although it is a dystopian version of China.

A dystopian version is fine, as long as it's set in the actual place on Earth - as opposed to some fantasy society based on China set on some other planet or something like that.

Cress is set partly in New Bejing - China but less than half of the book, unfortunately.
Cinder works, as is set only in China.

The series really needs to be read in order also:
Cinder
Scarlet
Cress

I want to use

Death Note, Vol. 7: Zero

However, this is vol. 7 in the series and doesn't list the setting (Tokyo, Japan).

Book one in the series Death Note, Vol. 1: Boredom does. Is this enough to establish location for Vol. 7? If not what can I do to be able to use it?

Thank you!

This appears to be set in Vietnam. The task requires a book set in China, Japan or Korea.
