organizing series

I just got myself the 2014 Kindle Voyage and I have a lot of non-amazon books that I've added and it's driving me nearly into tears that my series are not organized properly. I've tried using calibre, but it still isn't working. Does anyone have any solutions to this?

I rename my books with the series order number in front of the title. Calibre does this for me automatically with very little effort. I don't send books to my Kindle straight from Calibre, so I do this while "saving to disk" but there are many ways to accomplish this. Metadata plugboards is one way, but for me the easiest way was to just edit the template for saving to disk. Preferences -> (Change Calibre behavior) -> Import/Export -> Saving books to disk -> Save template.

The sort order on my Kindle is by title inside the collections, so the numbering works nicely since I have a separate collection for each series. Naturally you could also add series name to the title, in case you have a different kind of system for your collections.
