Men on White Horses by Annette Motley. About Catherine the Great in her early years. Enjoying it a lot, especially the nutty future Tsar Peter.

Rosalie wrote: "This sounds wonderful. Catherine the Great is one of my favorite Russian Royals."I'm almost done, review up later tonight or tomorrow. A bit romanticized but Motley seems to stick to the main facts. As said previously, Peter is stealing the show though...
I'm reading Between Two Queens right now.I saw it in the bookstore and thought it looked good, but when I went to my library for it they didn't have it. So I put in a purchase request and they bought it...
It's not great so far. I feel a little bad for telling the library to buy it, lol!

That was a DNF for me, didn't like her at all.
Elysium wrote: "Finished Princes in the Tower. Didn't like it and it just made me angry."The story is very sad. My teacher covered that story in her class on the Tudor-Stuarts and I remember it making me angry as well.
Misfit wrote: "I have started The Red Queen by Philippa Gregory."I can't wait to hear what you have to say. :)

Its different all right.
I'm reading 'Pour the Dark Wine' by Dinah Lampitt - it's a Jane Seymour novel.I'm also trying to get through 'The Pleasure Palace' by Kate Emerson but that's proving to be a bit more difficult.

Misfit wrote: "I have started The Red Queen by Philippa Gregory."can´t believe you are reading PG´s book Misfit!! It must be snowing in Seattle...

I am only a little into the book, but I really enjoy it so far! I'll have to let you know how I'm liking it once I read more.
Missie wrote: "I finished Sex with Kings and have now started The Hidden Diary of Marie Antoinette"How did you like Sex with Kings? I just bought Sex with the Queen and am about to start it.
Kelly wrote: "How did you like Sex with Kings? I just bought Sex with the Queen and am about to start it."I have a short review of it on my profile but in a nutshell, once I realized it didn't go in chronological order, I liked it a lot!
The new Gortner book, The Confessions of Catherine de Medici is in for me at the library. I'm planning to pick it up today and start it. I'm excited! I've heard it's not as good as The Last Queen, but I loved that one so much, if this one's even close, I will like it :)
For me the Last Queen was a five star read and this one was a four. It's still great but The Last Queen was better. Think it might be the subject matter, Catherine is maybe not as passionate or sympathetic, because the writing is wonderful :-).
Missie wrote: I have a short review of it on my profile but in a nutshell, once I realized it didn't go..."Thanks! I am liking the Queen book so much that I am definitely going to check out the King book as well!!
I am reading the Agony and the Ecstasy : A biographical Novel of Michelangelo. I am enjoying it so far. I just finished an easy read called Black Sheep by Georgette Heyer. It feels similar to enjoying a Jane Austin book.
I'm reading The White Queen by Philippa Gregory. I'm only on page 85 and I've heard more of Melusina than I've ever wanted...
Elysium wrote: "I'm reading The White Queen by Philippa Gregory. I'm only on page 85 and I've heard more of Melusina than I've ever wanted..."A common complaint :)
The White Queen was better than I thought but there was things that annoyed me much. Now I'm reading The Reluctant Queen by Jean Plaidy. It's been good so far and I'm liking how Richard is portrayed.
I've given up on Philippa Gregory's historical novels - I find that they all just annoy me in a variety of ways.
Finished Gortner's The Confessions of Catherine de Medici a couple of days ago. I liked it :)I just picked up PG's The Red Queen. I'm totally not excited to read it after hearing all the comments here! I'm only a few pages in and already irritated, lol! Don't know if I'll finish this one...
Mandy wrote: Finished Gortner's The Confessions of Catherine de Medici a couple of days ago. I liked it :)I am finishing up The Devil's Queen: A Novel of Catherine de Medici. Have you read that? How does it compare? I'm captivated by her!
Missie - I started The Devil's Queen, but didn't like it enough to read much of it.So I would say this was much better!
It focus's much more on Catherine's later life, not her childhood. I thought it was very interesting and very well written. I love Gortner's sympathy toward women that history has damned for one reason or another.
I loved the way he made Juana, Queen of Castile, sane(r) and the way he made Catherine a real person, instead of some over the top witch.
I think he should write about Elizabeth Woodville :)
Started Magnifico: The Brilliant Life and Violent Times of Lorenzo de' Medici yesterday; very readable so far.

Mandy, I didn't care so much for Devil's Queen especially a couple of plot twists at the end that aren't dealt with in the author's notes :-/
BTW, have you heard of Hostage Queen by Freda Lightfoot? From Margot's POV (Catherine's daughter). I enjoyed it a lot and it is the first in a trilogy.
I finished
and I am almost finished with
. Although both books are about Catherine they are different in so many places. The major one I found was the names of her children: Kalogridis has a son named Edouard when Gortner calls him Henri. I am no completely finished with Gornter's book but so far I am preferring Kalogridis' book.
I'm reading "Marie Antoinette" by Antonia Fraser. I'm about halfway through the book and I'm really enjoying it because Fraser is covering every aspect of Marie Antoinette's life, from public knowledge about her to very intimate personal details.
I'm reading ROYAL SURVIVOR The Life of Charles II by Stephen Coote. Don't know much about Charles so it's interesting.
Just finished The White Queen and I really liked it. I can't wait to read the red wueen if nothing to see the other side of the coin, so to speak.Anyone know who the third book will be about?
I think Margret onf Anjour would have been a good subject.
I always felt that with The Other QueenGregory missed a trick by NOT having Elizabeth as the third person. I didn't like the male characters point of view.
I was hoping she'd do one about Anne Neville. Would like to see her take on R3 from her point of view...I just finished The Red Queen. Rated it 3 stars. It was better than I originally thought it was going to be! The beginning was so ROUGH!
TWQ was better, imo.
I think PG intends to write one from Anne Neville's POV, but it's further down the line. Last I heard, her original trilogy had expanded to eight books!!.
