I am so mad - I have been relying on getting my emails for new group messages, and I realize now they haven't been working for ages. I have 53 unread messages here. This has happened with all my groups and probably other places too! I guess I better check my profile to see what has happened! Has this happened to others recently?

I had to stop reading Manda Scott's "Dreaming the Eagle." It just really wasn't doing it for me, though I think I may still try the next in the series because Boudica interests me. "The Tudor Rose" is next for me after I read and review "Two Brothers."

"The Tudor Rose"..."I have read the second book and I think there will be a lot of things in it that won't make sense to you if you haven't read the first one, including who the main character is (it isn't Boudica) and why he's having issues with what he is supposed to be doing.
Susanna wrote: "Yep. One or more threads about it at the Goodreads Feedback group, too."Susanna, I cannot figure out what to do. My profile settings are correct and here at the group it also says I will receive email! I KNOW I can go directly to the groups and read what is new, but I wonder what else I am missing of replies. If people are saying stuff to me and I don't know it, it feels very rude not to reply!
I went to GR Feedback and found the threads about this problem. I redid my email info as instructed. It is just that this happens repeatedly! It works for a few days if I am lucky and then it breaks again! Others seem to be having the same problem.
Thanks!
Susanna, this message is the first real proof that it seems to be working again, at least for group emails. Even when my group emails do function, emails concerning my inbox rarely work. So strange, and it really is kind of bad since it breaks down the communication at GR! I have been dealing with repeat email problems for over a year.

Thanks for the heads up though. I think I know which character is the main one based on your comment. :)
Elysium wrote: "I started I, Elizabet by Rosalind Miles and I'm not liking it that much."Finally! - someone else who isn't crazy about it! This was the first book I read about Elizabeth and I didn't care for it much, although most people who read it seem to love it. There were too many parts that just seemed to drag on and I didn't find her "voice" very convincing, especially as she got older. But then I also didn't like Miles first Guinevere book either (The Queen of the Summer Country).

Lol! Don't you just hate it when everyone is gaga over a book and you're sitting there scratching your head wondering if you have a different book then everyone else?
Susanna wrote: "That's how I felt reading The Secret History, Misfit."I loved The Secret History. A similar book is Gentlemen and Players.
Susanna wrote: "That's how I felt reading The Secret History, Misfit."With me it's either Pillars of the Earth or Gulland's Mistress of the Sun. Oh, and Signora da Vinci. Meh.
Susan C wrote: "Does anyone have a recommendation for abook on William I and Matilda?"There are a few books but some folks like some, others don't. A couple I know off the top of my head are Plaidy's "The Bastard King" and Georgette Heyer's "The Conqueror."
Misfit wrote: "Susanna wrote: "That's how I felt reading The Secret History, Misfit."With me it's either Pillars of the Earth or Gulland's Mistress of the Sun. Oh, and Signora da Vinci. Meh."
Ugh, Pillars of the Earth! Did not care for that one.

I preferred The Bastard King, but I think other people here preferred The Conqueror (I didn't finish it - got a little boring IMO).
Chrissie wrote: "Misfit, I finished Katherine last night and I Sooo loved it. "Glad you enjoyed it. I seem to recall after page 100 or so I never came up for air until it was done.
Misfit, the author's book about Winthrop, I read that is the follow up, but that takes place much later in time. Do they mean it was the next book written by the author? In any case, I want to read it!
I am reading Devil's Brood by Sharon Kay Penman. It is going slow not because ot=f the book but because of life. The problem was I bought it and then couldn't remember if I read the preceeding book in the series. I knew I had read the first one and liked it. It had been too long since I read them though.Devil's Brood
Chrissie wrote: "Misfit, the author's book about Winthrop, I read that is the follow up, but that takes place much later in time. Do they mean it was the next book written by the author? Susan C wrote: "Does anyone have a recommendation for abook on William I and Matilda?"There is also Wife to the Bastard by Hilda Lewis. I didn't care for Plaidy's NOrman trilogy - I think they are the worst books of hers that I've read.
Misfit wrote: "Chrissie wrote: "Misfit, the author's book about Winthrop, I read that is the follow up, but that takes place much later in time. Do they mean it was the next book written by the author? In any cas..."Misfit, that is what I thought too! Nothing else makes sense.

Good to know, I was leaning in her direction!
Susan,Some people like them. I thought they seemed hastily written - a bunch of facts just strung together with some dialogue thrown in every once in a while.
Susan C wrote: "Does anyone have a recommendation for abook on William I and Matilda?"Judith Tarr has two. Rites of Conquest and King's Blood. I haven't read them yet, but they're in my to-read pile; and I've loved everything else I've read by her.
I gave up with I, Elizabeth by Rosalind Miles. I made it to page 225.Now I'm reading The Duchess by Amanda Foreman
I finished The Sunne in Splendour a few days ago and now I'm reading group read for the month - A Treasury of Royal Scandals. It's a quick read.
Not sure what's up next! I've got a non-HF book that a neighborhood book club is reading...I'm not sure how interested I really am in it...
Has anyone read The School of Essential Ingredients?
I finished MCB's "The Tudor Rose" today and I really liked it, even though I was worried because I had heard that R3 was portrayed rather negatively. [image error]
Up next is Freda Warrington's "The Court of the Midnight King" which came in the mail today, and then Robin Maxwell's ARC of "O, Juliet" which ALSO came in the mail today.
I love happy mail days!
Robin, I just read your review of The Tudor Rose - looks pretty good to me!
I finished A Treasury of Royal Scandals last night.
I also read The School of Essential Ingredients. NOT a HF read, but I loved it and would recommend it to anyone!
Up next I think I'm going to read The Last Queen by Gortner.
Ma,dy, The Last Queen by Gortner is the book that motivated me to join this group and got me interested in the whole genre. I loved it. Read my review on the book(s page. The Last Queen if you are interested in why I liked it.

I ploughed my way through I, Elizabeth by Rosalind Miles, but it was more duty than pleasure, especially towards the end. It seemed to go on and on and on. I much prefer Margaret Irwin's trilogy (Young Bess, Elizabeth Captive Princess, Elizabeth and the Prince of Spain).
Chrissie,I remember reading your review back when you read the book! I'm trying not to read any reviews before I start it this time - don't want my expectations to be too high! i think that sort of ruined Sunne for me...
I still liked it, just not as much as I had hoped I would.
I've heard I, Elizabeth sucked from a LOT of people.
Susanna wrote: "I liked it (I, Elizabeth)."I loved it. My favorite book about her.
I am working on an ARC of Robin Maxwell's "O, Juliet" and I have to say, I am really, really enjoying it. :)
Elysium wrote: "I started The Seventh Son by Reay Tannahill. I've really liked it so far."Oh!! I am jealous! I want that book so bad!!!
Elysium wrote: "I started The Seventh Son by Reay Tannahill. I've really liked it so far."I like that one, especially the way Richard is portrayed. Loved the kitchen scene with Anne at the first of the book.
I was so happy when I found it in bookmooch! I like how Rickhard is portrayed and also how his and Anne's relationship is portrayed. Never read her books before. Does anyone know if they're any good?
Bought 3 Sandra Worth book this week: The King's Daughter, Lady of the Roses and Crown of Destiny. Can't wait to read those!

I believe "Crown of Destiny" is part of a 3 part series dealing with R3. Just not sure which part that one is!
I'm reading the Stolen One supposedly about Queen Elizabeth I secret love child I'm only half way through so have not yet found out whom the daddy is, fingers are pointing to thomas Seymour but Dudely isn't exactly innocent as we all know. It's a YA novel but actually pretty good, I usually avoid YA so don't hav much experience but so far so good.
Misfit wrote: "Elysium wrote: "I started The Seventh Son by Reay Tannahill. I've really liked it so far."I like that one, especially the way Richard is portrayed. Loved the kitchen scene with Anne at the firs..."
Agreed! It was a refreshingly unsentimental take on the kitchen scene, I thought - actually a refreshingly unsentimental take on the whole relationship between Anne and Richard. That was one of the things I liked most about it.
Nona wrote: "I'm reading the Stolen One supposedly about Queen Elizabeth I secret love child I'm only half way through so have not yet found out whom the daddy is, fingers are pointing to thomas Seymour but Dud..."I read this a few months ago and thought it was pretty good.
I'm not sure how soon I'll read another YA novel but I might look into them every now and again in the future.
I bought The Greatest Knight yesterday since I've heard so many great recommendations for Elizabeth Chadwick and ordered the next in the series today.I'm group reading Royal Scandals while I read my more serious bookclub book 'Stolen Lives". Royal Scandals is pure entertainment.
Just finished The Secret Bride In The Court of Henry VIII and I didn't care much for it. Next up is.. The Perfect Royal Mistress A Novel. I hope this one is better.
