Nicole (nicolepo) | 107 comments When Elizabeth and I were first coming up for the concept of the BooktubeSFF Awards, we decided to have the winners be determined by a panel because 1) We wanted to make sure everyone had read all the nominated works before voting, and this is a lot easier to do with a committee than a popular vote 2) the panel format works really well with booktube/youtube platform 3) we weren't sure how to go about the specifics of running a popular poll. However, we're still very interested in having a popular vote portion of the BooktubeSFF Awards, so this post is to start addressing point 3 above and work out the specifics and technical issues behind holding a popular vote.

I've created a test vote page on the tumblr. It contains 5 total questions: 4 sample questions, 2 formated as instant runoff questions and 2 formated as first past the post questions. The final question asks if you would prefer first past the post or instant runoff voting or another voting system (please specify.) The logic behind this page is: 1) to determine what voting system you all would prefer and to show how the ballot would likely appear for first past the post and instant runoff voting 2) to work out any technical issues with ballots beforehand 3) to collect a data set for instant runoff voting, allowing me to test the script I have for tabulating the results of an instant runoff vote.

It would be cool if you all would mosey on over to the page and vote. Also, if you have questions or comments about voting on the shortlist, please leave them here and we can chat about them. Ultimately, this project is about the BooktubeSFF community so feedback on how people want the award to be run and to appear is valuable.

Hey Nicole: the 'test vote' link in the second para above directed me back to this page, not the tumblr. Was this intentional?

(p.s. have a great time in Venice!!!)

Nope, not intentional. The link was broken. Should be fixed now.

Thanks :)

Maija (maijavi) Troubleshooting comments:
I can't get the form to appear at all on iPhone 4. It doesn't appear on Safari, or when opened through the twitter or goodreads browser view. The text part of the post does appear on the aforementioned. The tumblr app can't find the post at all.

I will try later on my tablet to see if it works there, or if it only works on a desktop computer.

I've voted now. :) I noticed that you could only vote once for each column, i e you can't choose "no vote" twice. And I didn't want to give a vote to either alligators or snakes, they are equally bad! Geez! ;)

Yes, I was going to comment about this as well. If you pick "no award" as the second option, you seem to be forced to rank a third option after "no award", which is not how instant runoff voting should work. You can rank things after no award, but you should also be able to leave options unranked. Is there some way to tweak the form to change that?

Yup, it didn't work on my Android phone either, using the default android browser. Worked fine on my laptop though. Could see the text but not the forms.

Nicole (nicolepo) | 107 comments Katherine and Linnea: I am able to leave choices blank when submitting a ballot. What is the error you receive when trying to submit? Can you screen cap and send it to me?

RE access on mobile devices: I'm able to access and submit from my Android. Are you all unable to access because you don't have the google sheets app installed or is it an issue with tumblr? Again if you can give me more info about the problem, that would be helpful. I'm honestly not sure how well I'll be able to deal with mobile issues, so it this turns out to be a systemic issue I might just have to suggest people use desktops/laptops when voting, but I'll see what I can do (once I have access to my own laptop :P)

Wendy (readandpurl) | 5 comments I'm on Chrome and the Tumblr post comes up, I can read your 3 paragraphs of text, but then it's just white space as I scroll all the way down (where I assume the poll is located).

My voting right now is like this:
1 (best) - Lizards
2 - Alligators
3 (worst) - no vote

But what if I want it to be like:
1 (best) - Lizards
2 - no vote
3 (worst) - no vote

If I try the latter then it tells me to not choose more than one answer per column. I don't know if it might work with leaving them both blank instead of clicking "no vote", since I can't seem to figure out how to un-click them in order to try that.

Hope that makes things clear, just ask me again otherwise. :) If I screen cap the text will mostly be in Swedish, so I'm not sure that'll help.

As for the Android problem, I can see the introductionary text on the page but not the actual polls (it's blank). This goes for both my phone and tablet, which both have the Google Sheets app but not the Tumblr app installed.

Maija (maijavi) Android Nexus 7 tablet with Google Sheets app installed:
Chrome shows voting form fine
Tumblr app pretends the whole page doesn't exist

Iphone 4 with Google Sheets installed:
Safari doesn't show form, just white space below text
Tumblr app pretends the whole page doesn't exist

In both cases Tumblr app just goes to the previous post instead.

Wendy (readandpurl) | 5 comments Okay, I tried it again with Chrome but this time at home on my laptop and they all worked (with the exception of selecting the same number on the instant runoffs, but I think that's probably due to the type of poll it is - more of a ranking system, which would make sense why you can't select two items as 3s, etc). I was also able to select to change my answers, change my answers, go back to edit them again and see last selected item were kept.

Ah, I see what you're saying. I intentionally designed the question to disallow ranking the same item twice. I wasn't thinking about how that would effect "No Vote" at the time, and I'm inclined to keep things the way they are. It would potentially be more problematic to allow voters to rank the same nominee multiple times (having someone rank the same best novel nominee 1,2,3,4, and 5 would screw things up more than not being able to vote "No Vote" twice, basically.)

Perhaps as a compromise I can say in the text that any ballot spots left blank after "No Vote" would be counted as "No Vote" as opposed to indifferent (what leaving a rank blank usually means.) Therefor, in your example you would vote on the ballot:

1. Lizards
2. No Vote
3. left blank

And before tallying I would go into the spreadsheet and add "No Vote" to the number 3 spot. Another alternative is to list No Vote as many times as there are nominees, but I'd like to avoid that for aesthetic reasons (although I suppose it would technically be the most correct for running the voting.)

RE Mobile: The link above links to a Tumblr page not a post. The Tumblr app (as far as I'm aware) never displays pages correctly. Later today, I'll try and reformat the page as a post and see if that works on mobile devices.

It's not a big issue (for me anyway), just something I noticed. :)

Ben Nash | 1 comments I just tested things out with Firefox on my android phone.

The first four questions worked, though I had to scroll within each frame to see all the options.

The last question wouldn't scroll at all, so I switched to "request desktop site" and was able to select and submit.

Nicole (nicolepo) | 107 comments Hm, okay, I tried reposting the page (here if you're interested.) For the post, I experience the same problem that others have mentioned above on mobile, so it actually looks worse from my end. From the little bit of internet searching I've done, it looks like tumblr has some issues with embedding Google Docs. If that's the case, I'm probably not going to be the one to solve the problem.

I think my work around will likely be to have the final post have the voting forms embedded and linked. That way, if people experience a problem with the embedded version, they should be able to follow the link to the original form and submit from there.

Katherine (maybeandroid) Sounds good Nicole, thanks for all your hard work :)
