Seven LOTR is Legend,Epic-Fantasy.. Tolkien is an indoctrinate
HP is Fantasy.. Rowling is a doctor who knows the pulse of audience...

For me, I was so much interested in HP -1,2,3 and then slowly I lost interest in it. When it comes to LOTR, I read it for 3 times and still feels so fresh & amazing everytime I start the journey.

Better not to insult LOTR by comparing it with Masterpiece HP.

That's a well-written response! Hard to add to that.

J.S. Burke Both series have unique, well-developed worlds that are fun to visit.

Victor Kloss You can't compare the two like that. It's like asking which of your children you like the most.

Papaphilly Not even close, Lord of the Rings. It is the original and all other epics that came after the LOTR are based on it. Harry Potter has its roots there too. Oh yes it does.

message 106: by Len (new) - rated it 5 stars

Len Robertson The Ring is a rare-for-the-English adventure tale that actually crosses mountains and plains. Harry Potter hardly goes anywhere. The result is a diminished scale to the Potter stories.

To put it another way, Chicago is more dangerous than anything Potter faced. Not only does the city have approximately 250,000 gang members of one affiliation or another, it has more dangerous animals beginning with the skunk. "Don't do anything stupid when you encounter one," Dumbledore tells Harry. "Just let it go on its merry way. Otherwise, you might be suspended from school---for a considerable time while you rid yourself of the stink".

Then, there are the cougars, bears and wolves roaming the suburbs, as well as the coyotes, raccoons and opossums. That's just Chicago.

Go further west and Harry would meet grizzly bears, moose, elk and rattlesnakes. Steve Irwin devoted one of his shows just to the rattlesnake. As he said, "they have the longest fangs of any snake and a seven foot, diamond back will kill you."

"If you see a bear cub," Dumbledore warns, "leave immediately. The only way you can escape her angry mother is use your broom."

Bill (Just a) One way to compare the novels is to compare the movie versions that reflect them. The HP stories are pleasant. The LTR stories are epic.

Totally agree with this.

Brandie I have seen and own all the movies for HP and LOTR. I have read every book for HB and LOTR and own them. It's safe to say I am a huge fan of both. You couldn't have HB without LOTR. Tolkien created the modern day version of elves, hobbits, orcs, etc. Rowling took many ideas from LOTR. So both are equal in greatness depending on the generation they were for. I think both will and are part of classic fiction that will be around for years to come. That is a legacy worth having.

Phyllis I was shocked that anyone would even compare "The Lord of the Ring" trilogy with the Harry Potter books. My first thought was "Are you serious?" I read the Hobbit first, followed by the trilogy in order. When I was done, I was actually depressed for some time because I missed reading them, but re-reading is good - just not as good.

Christina LOTR no discussion here for me.

Robert It's like asking:
Which do you like better, chocolate cake or chocolate candy?
The clear answer being..... Yes!

Yes it is. Nice of the authors to spend so long writing something great to share.

message 116: by Charmy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Charmy LOTR. Overall artistic value is richer. Harry potter books were entertaining and enjoyable but the later adaptations flopped. After Goblet of Fire the movies went down hill with a vengeance while Peter Jackson didn't skimp on quality.

Charmy Garth wrote: "After Beowulf JRR Tolkien has defined the fantasy genre. I can think of only a few writers whose works are not derivative. Guy Gabriel Kay and Neil Gaiman are two of a very short list."

Agree, Neil Gaiman is a standout. I will have to add the other to my long list.

Renee E Charmy wrote: "Garth wrote: "After Beowulf JRR Tolkien has defined the fantasy genre. I can think of only a few writers whose works are not derivative. Guy Gabriel Kay and Neil Gaiman are two of a very short list..."

Patricia McKillip's work belongs on that list. At least a good part of it. I haven't read Riddle Master yet (don't know why, except that her other books, starting with The Forgotten Beasts of Eld drew me more), so I can't speak to it's derivations, but her others are a separate line from Tolkien. And probably Juliet Marillier as well.

message 119: by J.S. (new) - rated it 5 stars

J.S. Burke The Forgotten Beasts of Eld is among my favorites.
I think many authors have their own unique sci fantasy books. That's why I've read so many, and I appreciate the diversity.

message 120: by Kinzey (new) - rated it 5 stars

F**k no. There is a really special place for you called the Door of Night.
Note that its infested with the most powerful Dark Lord mofo named Morgoth Bauglir.
Twilight was f**king awful, my sisters made me watch the movies and read the books.
It doesn't deserve even one star.
Don't dare compare it with Lotr or Hp.
As for this topic.
Lotr is better then Hp by a mile.

Elentarri Nicholas wrote: "There is a really special place for you called the Door of Night." LOL I'm not sure which thread it was, but someone else was consigned to a "special place in Mordor" for similar sentiments.
