Nathan "N.R." Gaddis (nathannrgaddis) | 414 comments A funny thing happened on the way through The Wake. I read the following phrase ::

"...as from Magellanic clouds..."

for which McHugh says ::

"Magellanic clouds: 2 spots formed by nebulae & starclusters, visible in Southern hemisphere"

And not like it's a weird thing, just that I don't know astronomy from astrology (joyce to blame!) :: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magellan...

The Weird thing is that one hour later I was reading in Arno Schmidt's School for Atheists: A Novella = Comedy in 6 Acts the following words ::

"(till then I'd always felt a lacuna, never once to 've beheld the Magellanic Cloud; but since=thén My needs 're most well-met)."

My response, to paraphrase, was ::

"-:! -, -, -, ----;! , ------:? -(!)!"

For further fun with Schmidt, he sneaks his name in on page 197, about mid-page, hanging on the right margin, something like ::

"Cause these here were more sorda Su(h/k)ARNO'ic;"

fun!! And those few columns of what the TV is broadcasting was cool to read shortly after Joyce's own Butt & Taff thing on the radio (or TV) with that wonderful description of the on=turning of the Television.
