Barbara Donsky (barbara_donsky) | 2 comments Hello Everyone:

I’m new to the group and delighted to have found you. Over the years, I’ve published articles in educational journals; a doctoral dissertation Trends in Written Composition in Elementary Schools in the United States, 1890 -1960; and a short story—“What’s the Matter with Harry?

Now, in a completely different vein, I have written a memoir, Veronica’s Grave, to be published in May 2016 by She Writes Press.

What’s it about? It’s the story of a young child whose mother suddenly ‘disappears.’ No one explains to her that her mother has died—leaving behind a prematurely born baby boy—so there’s no talk of heaven, no angels singing or harps playing.

Forced to keep the secret of her mother’s existence from her brother as he grows up, the young girl struggles to keep from being crushed under the weight of family secrets.

But hold on! It’s not all gloom and doom. To the contrary, it’s a tale of loss and resilience, one showing the power of literature — all those plucky orphans, from Little Orphan Annie and the Boxcar Children to the incomparable Nancy Drew—to offer hope where there is little.

My biggest concern currently is how family members will react to a story they’ve never heard -- a concern I've heard voiced by others voice in this forum.

All best wishes, Barbara Donsky (aka Bonitababs)

Leila Summers (leilasummers) | 760 comments Welcome Barbara! Your story sound fascinating.

Yes, we all have the concern of family members when we share our stories. It can be tricky, but sometimes we just have to speak our own truth.
Kindest,
Leila
