What do authors really think of Amazon Pay-Per-Page?

There has been a LOT of rubbish written and said about Amazon's Pay Per Page for Kindle Unlimited recently.

It is overwhelmingly a great idea from Amazon that will help authors and readers alike.

If it's from Amazon, it earns my automatic distrust. I don't much care what any 'initial buzz' says, either...how many times have we seen early-hoopla proven false?

Plus the fact that I am adamantly against e-readers in general. They're a disaster for culture and literacy both. Half of all these downloads are never even read. The downloads that are read are fantasy series or trashy erotic franchises.

Of course, it's early to tell. But I think I agree with Ben Galley in that subscription services usually devaluate the products — in this case, the books — and that's not a good thing for authors in general if consumers are moving that way.
