This question absolutely floored me when I got to it in the novel. As a person of faith, and just generally sensitive to the pain of others, I had never considered that there was any other way to aim to live. But now, in the context of natural selection and this novel, this question is so intriguing. What do you think for yourself? And how do you think the novel/Gilbert answers this question? Can your reasoning fit in with that of natural selection?
