April Wilson (aprilwilson) Hello, Friends

Can anyone shed some light on this: If I upload a new e-book file to Amazon (to replace the one on there now), will only new purchasers get the new file, or will everyone get the new file (i.e., will previous purchasers get the updated file, too)?

Thanks,

April

John | 14 comments I believe you have to request Amazon send out the update and convince them to do it.

Thanks, John. That doesn't sound very easy to do. :)

John | 14 comments I think they are usually reluctant to update previous purchases because it replaces the old file along with erasing any notes or highlights the purchaser may have made in their version.

Christina McMullen (cmcmullen) It's actually really easy. Just go to contact us, select making corrections from their drop down of subjects and explain why you want the update pushed out. They usually email back within a day and depending, they either ask for more info or give you a daye by which their review will be complete.

I guess mine didn't get through to them. I had sent them a long message with all the changes made and they never came back to me.

BR Kingsolver (brkingsolver) | 27 comments My understanding is that it depends on a setting on each user's kindle. The user has to set it to get updates.

Okay, I looked around on my author's page and couldn't find the link. One more time...step by step, where is it?

It is not on your author page. Go to kdp and follow the contact us link at the bottom of the page.

Actually it's not a setting on your Kindle device, it's on the Settings tab of "Manage Your Content and Devices" on your Amazon account. You have to set that up online:

1. Go to Manage Your Content and Devices.
2. Select Settings.
3. Select Automatic Book Update to expand the section. Select On to receive automatic updates for your book, or select Off to receive an e-mail notification when an update is available to download.

But that just sets the user's filter on whether they get updates or not. I'd trust Christina on how to get the update pushed out as an author.

Micah, thank you! I didn't realize this setting was here. I checked it out and found that my Kindle was set to "On" for "Automatic Book Update." But I didn't receive the new file on my own Kindle. I wonder if the new files has to be published as a "new edition" for readers to get the newly updated file. I'll have to ask Amazon about that.

Thanks for pointing out this setting.

p.s. I've always loved the name Micah and want to use it for a character someday. :)
