message 953: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Annabeth is so annoying. I liked her in pjo but she just gets steadily more and more annoying. She’s like oh I’m perfect. Look I can fight with a knife and I’m so clever and pretty. Like shut up Annabeth no one cares. Yeah she saved Percy’s life and all and she did great stuff, it’s just why are you annoying? Why do you call him seaweed brain when it’s so degrading? Why do you think you own the place and boss everyone about? She’s important to the series, I get it. But that does not mean she can come swanking in like hi. So I’m one of the seven. Nico should’ve been there instead. She has no relevance. Yes Percy was always the destined one so it’s okay! He’s a hero! Piper and the rest are supposed to be it too, because they were pretty much written for that purpose. Annabeth is so annoying. She acts so cool but she just isn’t, she’s just this smart kid who calls her bf seaweed brain just because he’s dumber than she is, and her character concept is cool - a tragic beautiful smart blonde who had a dark past and loves her boyfriend, but she’s just annoying. And horrible. And judgy as shit. Idk if I’m allowed to say this but Annabeth is a bitch. She wasn’t a bitch in pjo. But now she is. People say I’m jealous of her, but the truth is no one is jealous of her. They never will be. She’s so fake, so horrible, such a bad PERSON and she just goes around flouncing about like I have flaws, don’t hate me! Percabeth is so overrated. Annabeth is good, okay. But she could lower her ego and I’d like her a bit more.

Serine Majid I love Annabeth!!!!!!!!!! Let's go Percabethhhhh! lol

message 955: by Grace (new) - rated it 5 stars

Grace Personally, I feel like Annabeth and piper are my least favourite characters because they both just seem really jealous and possessive of Jason and Percy. For example, Annabeth is really jealous of Rachel because she thinks Rachel and Percy like each other. Bear in mind Annabeth and Percy weren’t even dating at this point. She just needs to calm down and realise that if Percy talks to another girl it doesn’t men that he’s leaving her.

Piper on the other hand, is just obsessed with Jason it’s like her life revolves around him. She’s also insanely jealous of other girls such as Reyna, who she thinks might take Jason away from her. I think she needs to realise that there are other things in the world apart from Jason out there and she should let Jason live his own life too. They don’t need to be joined at the hip all the time.

Don’t get me wrong, piper and Annabeth are both incredibly strong, warriorlike characters, I just believe that they need to loosen their grip/dependency on Percy and Jason.

Jack Cornelius Just finished the series and yeah I don't like her either. Annabeth takes out her baggage on the characters around her and has borderline egomania. She's judgemental, rude and demeans others.
The main focus of her nastiness seems to be Percy, which either makes sense (he's the most available target) or makes no sense (that's her best friend). She consistently puts him down by calling him "seaweed brain". Which is a fairly passive way of demeaning his intelligence, pretty nasty power play really. She regularly verbally abuses him whenever she is proven wrong, she gets scared, he doesn't pick up on her subtext or he has feelings for other female characters.
Annabeth regularly (consciously or not) provokes Percy by defending Luke in front of him, despite knowing how Percy feels about him. This is exacerbated by the fact she ignores how often Luke has tried to kill Percy and others! This is so mental! It's defending someone after you find out they're a murdering anarchist! Though I was more annoyed at Percy for not yelling at her than anything else. I was kind of surprised Percy and her stayed friends throughout the series, I kept waiting for her to change sides and join Luke. That would've been an epic betrayal. :D
There was a scene that really exemplified her emotional selfishness to me. Annabeth and Percy are doing a cabin inspection together near the start of Book 5. She tries to initiate a romantic discussion and Percy sidesteps. Then she explodes when he discusses Rachel's visions and his impending death. Rather than comfort him about disturbing dreams and the fact he's just learnt he could die in a week, she fixates on her feelings and calls him a coward. Made me want to reach into the book and give her a slap! Real friend of the year material.
Annabeth had made almost no effort to encourage Percy, in spite of the competition with Rachel. No softening behaviour. Zero flirtation. One maybe date (that never happened) and one kiss. A lot angry jealous behaviour. In fact throughout the series she discouraged Percy with her fixation on Luke. She flip flopped between Luke and Percy. Then she's upset when he's deflects. The whole "coward" name calling read like some kind of twisted projection to me. Like she's thinking "I've left it too late and lost him".
As I was writing this I realized just messed up she is. Boys will put up with a lot from pretty girls, but this is next level. Percy must have pretty low self esteem to stick around.

Pebbles i also really disliked annabeth in both the pjo and hoo series, but in a different way. in the pjo series, i purely hated her personality, and how rick added in a flaw to make her more “realistic” but it never gets mentioned again, nor do any of the other characters recognize it. she was also a jerk to rachel and percy and took it out on them when she had emotional baggage. im fine with realistically misunderstood and edgy characters, but this was a little overboard. maybe choose a different time to be jealous of a girl when you’re in a life-threatening quest? not only these reasons, but also the fact that she was “beautiful” and “smart” (even more so than her other cabinmstes) and she was athletic. at first, i was very puzzled as to what i should classify her as. she certainly had flaws, but that didnt make her either relatable nor did it make her seem real. it just came off as annoying. and her description and traits also seemed to classify her as a mary sue. but i happened to come across the term “jerk sue” on the internet. as soon as i read it, i knew it was annabeth. flawed, but in a bad way. nobody acknowledges the annabeth’s supposed “flaws” or the fact that she has severe mood swings and can step on everybody like a doormat whenever she feels like it. but when hoo rolled around, i was surprised to see that she not only lost the little personality she had, but she also completely got rid of her fatal flaw and it was never mentioned again in any of rick’s books. now this was a mary sue. people are in awe of her intelligence and bravery, and of course she is the first to finish the quest of athena. everybody is wonderfully intimidated by her, and she still thinks she is superior to percy. and this is not a nod to her fatal flaw. even percy thinks this, as he always is afraid of what annabeth might say/think of what he says. he even said once that their relationship was very fragile, like a glass sculpture. he is scared of ruining their relationship and is scared of annabeth. i dont think this is a way a healthy relationship should work. annabeth is judo-flipping percy for no reason, calling him seaweed brain, all while percy is stressing about annabeth. honestly, annabeth is a tsundere taken to a whole new level. ty for finishing my rant ^^

Michelle Pebbles wrote: "i also really disliked annabeth in both the pjo and hoo series, but in a different way. in the pjo series, i purely hated her personality, and how rick added in a flaw to make her more “realistic” ..."

0-0

you have no idea how happy I am to finally see someone else acknowledge the fact that what Annabeth does goes unnoticed (her "flaws" I mean).

her fans use her flaws as a way to show that she is not a Mary Sue, or a borderline sue, but if whatever mistake Annabeth does is ignored by almost everyone all the time, it's not realistic, therefore you can't call her character realistic, because the way her character gets treated, and how others react to her, is not realistic.

Example: In The Lightning Thief, remember how the gang came across the sphinx, and how Annabeth had to solve the riddle or risk getting the gang killed? Well, she could've easily answered the friggin question, but nOPe, it was an insult to her intellect.

*crickets*

then later on no one got upset at her for endangering their life.

*crickets intensify*

I will definitely be posting more here, because boy I have a lot to say about this character, but for now I will just post this, and wait for possible replies.

edit: I searched up jerk sue, and yes I can definitely see why you would classify Annabeth as one.

when was the last time someone who was not Annabeth herself, acknowledge her "realistic" flaws?

message 971: by Michelle (new)

Michelle third comment woot woot :D

I don't think Percabeth is healthy, nor do I think it would last realistically speaking. Annabeth's hubris is not a good combination with Percy's loyalty. It's like she is a completely different person around him, while still holding on to her egotistical ways, and no matter how horrible she is to others, he let's it slide, oh "because my Wise Girl has gone through a lot and is smart and purty and brave" whereas if he messes up, he gets demeaned by his Wise Girl. Sometimes I am a little irritated by Percy's lack of ability to know when someone isn't right for him, or if he deserves better.

An irony is that Arachne, a famous enemy of Athena, and the mother of spiders (aka one of the worst nightmares for Children of Athena), had the exact same flaw as Annabeth herself (who is ironically, the daughter of the goddess who cursed Arachne, because of said flaw).
It was because of hubris that Arachne had that curse placed upon her.

message 972: by Lily (last edited Sep 19, 2020 01:09PM) (new)

Lily Mercer Darn, I thought I was the only one. Honestly, I really hate Percy and Annabeth's relationship, romantic or otherwise. I just saw her emotionally abusing him over and over and he just takes it.

She isn’t only a b1tch to Percy, but to a majority of the characters in both pjo and hoo. I get that her flaw is hubris, but she takes it to a whole new level! She constantly thinks that everyone around her is so fricking beneath her (probably even the gods!) even when they outsmart her or show a good amount of intelligence. (looking at you Percy) And don’t get me started with her jealousy! I mean, I get that she is allowed to be a bit jealous of girls that seem to like Percy romantically, but to the level she does? I mean come on! (Like she really would murder Rachel in cold blood, even in front of Percy) She also gets angry if he goes to any of his friends for help, but when he asks for help from her, she's all like "Of course you need my help, you're a dumbass and I'm the smartest person on the planet." I just kept waiting for Percy to just ditch her and get himself a girl that actually cares about his mental wellbeing.

Even when he was telling her about a nightmare he had and his concerns for it, Annabeth yells at him and calls him a coward! Seriously?!! Why on fricking earth would you call the guy with low self-esteem a coward?! And just because he didn't do what you wanted him too!! (she wanted him to do some romantic thing or whatever - which he was never obligated to do) He's not your fricking pet to show off to people and do what you want him to, he's a human with human needs and wants!!!

Like, Percy is giving his all in that relationship, even if he was pretty oblivious. He was constantly worried about Annabeth's wellbeing that he forgot about his. He'd defend her at all cost (EVEN TO AN ANGRY GOD) and all she'd say is "Yeah, he has to do that, cuz he's mine." and then ditch him later on when he needs her. I don't know how this fricking fandom thinks that this relationship is healthy. It's so fricking toxic and abusive. I just kept feeling bad for Percy and wondering why he deals with all of Annabeth's crap.

In hoo, Annabeth got even worse. All her personality was at that point was she was obsessed (yes she was obsessed) with Percy and she was ridiculously smart (like could solve things even the gods couldn't manage). For example, when she found Jason, Leo, and Piper (I don't like her much either), she legit just said "Ugh. You're not Percy." like as if they matter less than him! She was so fricking rude with them even if they just came out of a near-death situation. Also, the whole Arachne "battle" was so stupid. She just bullshitted her way through it with Arachne just falling for every stupid "trick". I didn't like her much before, but I couldn't stand her by then. I didn't even have the motivation to read the rest of it because I was constantly angry with her and some other characters. I just looked up what happened to save myself the time and energy.

I'm sorry for how long this comment/rant is, but I've been wanting to say this for years. She's the most overrated character I have ever seen in any series.

Listen,
I tolerated/liked Annabeth in the first series, became very pissed but understanding when she kept on defending Luke, but liked her overall. Though I never actually connected with her and never understood the "I ran away because I thought my family hated" and some what thought that was dramatic. Then everything I tolerated about her goes out the window in the next series, and now my tolerance of her is on the ground shattered to dust.

message 976: by Janae (new)

Janae Brown Ok. Annabeth is my fourth favorite character. But only because I had liked her initially. Annabeth is plain and simple: obsessed. Like, your boyfriend gets kidnapped and you meet people who aren't him like you don't walk all over them like they are of zero importance to the world. You finally see your boyfriend again and you flip him over and put your knife to his throat in a place that is trained for military and he's a leader to them. For a daughter of Athena that was stupid. Then you say don't ever leave me again like possessive much? I could go on and on but one thing I wanna get across is how Annabeth isn't a saint. She hated Tyson and Nico without getting to know them and hated Reyna, Calypso and Rachel for liking Percy. Like dude you don't control feelings. I hate how people always make Annabeth seem like the second coming of the Lord while characters like Reyna and Nico who have done just as much and even more than her get treated as background characters. In my opinion, the prophecy should have said 9 or Nico replacing Annabeth. Her only importance was to find the Athena Parthenos full stop. Even in Tartarus Percy did most of the work. In my opinion, Annabeth is a toxic, possessive person who steps on persons she deems below her and rides on her boyfriend's fame. As much as I tolerate her, she has a shit ton of flaws

Meg Valdez Hi! I haven't been online in a while and I fell down a rabbit hole and found this so I set everything up back again so respect my DEVOTION!
Okay, I just wanted to say:

We can't expect characters to be perfect. Characters are like us--flawed, imperfect, and amazing in their own way. Annabeth may not be perfect, and many people might or might not ship Percabeth. But here's the thing for me: I ship Percabeth, it's not my OTP, but I ship it because--not because they might be perfect for each other, even though they totally could, but because they love each other and WANT to be together. If Tartarus didn't show you that then... oh well.
Right. Back to Annabeth. She's flawed and imperfect. But that's what makes her relatable.

But i respect all of your opinions :)

tdadragon annabeth is so awsome percy and almost everyone else in the books if not for her!!!!!!!!

message 981: by Amber (new)

Amber Like me, I HATE and I mean HATE Annabeth. She thinks she's like, the world's best person. But then, she's always being saved by Percy, which basically shows that she's VERY incapable of ANYTHING. And Percy, he's always like, treated by Annabeth like a dog that's behaved badly. Whenever he doesn't seem as smart as Annabeth, she's always like, "oh, what a pity." I wish Percy would go and find a girlfriend that actually cared about him! Annabeth, on the other hand, DESERVES to be single. In the Mark of Athena when she and Percy are reunited, Percy's really happy to see her, right? Then Annabeth LEGIT JUDO FLIPS him and tells him to "not dare to leave her again". Like, GURL, he didn't WANT to leave you. He had no choice! And the fact that she's literally SO mad at the other girls who like Percy. If she could, Annabeth would kill Calypso, Reyna, and Rachel, and she's gonna think that Percy won't even care, like, "I'm the best girlfriend EVER, no one's EVER gonna be mad at me!" Well, Annabeth, NO. I actually think Percy is kinda paranoid for liking Annabeth at all, and he doesn't even pay attention to EVERY STUPID THING she's done, and he still thinks that his Wise Girl is perfect. And Annabeth is also SO stubborn! She hates Tyson at first, (well he's a cyclops and I know Annabeth has had bad experiences with cyclopes) but even after knowing that Tyson ISN'T dangerous, WELL, guess what? SHE STILL DOESN'T LIKE HIM! Like ok, it's fine for you to hate someone, but to let EVERYONE KNOW, EVEN PERCY, who has had his life saved by Tyson, that Annabeth does HATE Tyson. Like we don't care! NO ONE DOES!

message 984: by Amber (last edited Mar 22, 2025 03:32PM) (new)

Amber I'm continuing my rant
1. Dismissive Attitude Towards Percy:

From their initial meeting, Annabeth exhibits a condescending attitude towards Percy. She frequently undermines his abilities, attributing his successes to luck rather than acknowledging his unique strengths. This persistent belittlement can be disheartening, especially considering Percy's significant contributions to their quests.

2. Overbearing and Controlling Behavior:

Annabeth's strategic mindset often leads her to take charge, sometimes overshadowing Percy's perspectives. She tends to dictate plans without considering his input, reflecting a belief that her approach is superior. This dynamic can make Percy feel marginalized, despite his pivotal role in their adventures.

3. Prejudice Against Cyclopes:

In The Sea of Monsters, Annabeth harbors deep-seated biases against cyclopes, stemming from their association with the villainous Polyphemus. Her initial mistrust of Tyson, Percy's half-brother, is evident, as she dismisses him solely based on his lineage. This prejudice blinds her to Tyson's loyalty and worth, highlighting a narrow-mindedness that contradicts the inclusive values she often espouses.

4. Jealousy and Insecurity:

Annabeth's jealousy becomes apparent with the introduction of Rachel Dare. She reacts possessively when Percy shows interest in Rachel, displaying insecurity about their relationship. Instead of trusting Percy, Annabeth's jealousy strains their bond, revealing vulnerabilities in her character.
Riordan Wiki

5. Reluctance to Admit Fault:

Throughout their journey, Annabeth seldom acknowledges her mistakes. When plans go awry, she deflects blame onto external factors or others, rarely accepting personal responsibility. This unwillingness to admit fault can create tension, as it prevents genuine reconciliation and growth within their partnership.

6. Emotional Distance and Guardedness:

Despite her close bond with Percy, Annabeth often keeps her emotions in check, making it difficult for Percy to fully understand her feelings. This emotional distance can be frustrating, as it hinders open communication and deepens the emotional divide between them.

7. Underestimation of Percy's Abilities:

Annabeth frequently underestimates Percy's capabilities, doubting his intellect and decision-making skills. She often assumes he needs guidance, failing to recognize his growth and unique talents. This patronizing attitude can be discouraging for Percy, who seeks equality in their partnership.

8. Dismissal of Non-Strategic Approaches:

Annabeth places a high value on strategy and planning, often dismissing approaches she deems uncalculated or impulsive. Percy's more spontaneous methods are frequently criticized, despite their occasional success. This dismissal can make Percy feel that his instincts and perspectives are undervalued.

9. Overemphasis on Her Own Intelligence:

While Annabeth's intellect is a defining trait, she sometimes places undue emphasis on it, using it as a measure of superiority. This overemphasis can alienate those who may not share her intellectual prowess, including Percy, leading to feelings of inadequacy or resentment.

10. Occasional Lack of Empathy:

In certain situations, Annabeth's focus on objectives leads her to overlook the emotional needs of those around her. Percy, in particular, feels this lack of empathy, especially when Annabeth prioritizes missions over personal well-being. This oversight can strain their relationship, as emotional support is a crucial component of any partnership.

In summary, while Annabeth Chase is a multifaceted character with commendable qualities, her interactions with Percy Jackson reveal complexities that can be challenging. Her dismissive attitude, controlling tendencies, prejudices, and other behaviors contribute to a dynamic that, at times, undermines the strength of their partnership. Recognizing these flaws offers a more nuanced understanding of Annabeth's character and the intricacies of her relationship with Percy. So basically I really can't see why ANYONE likes Annabeth. THNX for reading 😅
