ABANDONED. High schooler in LA finds out he has magical powers

There was a book I read in middle school, I'm pretty sure it came out in the 90s. It was about high schooler who lived in Los Angeles. One of his parents was involved in the movie industry and he eventually became mentored by a wizard who taught him how to do magic. At some point he takes his love interest for a ride in a flying car. I'm almost positive the cover strongly featured purple?

Shani, does the entire story take place in LA? Or, is the boy transported to a magical land?

I don't remember him travelling to another world, but it could be possible. I just know for sure that he is from LA.

The Wizard's Apprentice by S.P. Somtow ?
