RandomAnthony | 14536 comments ...and I'm glad I'm teaching all morning because I hear the coverage is all over tv. Wall to wall coverage? Seriously? What am I missing here?

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Michael Jackson news is becoming the new "Black Velvet"... and that sucks.

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments I like Gus' point about news for profit. How free is the press when it must first and foremost be concerned w/making a profit?

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Considering that print media is going under and continues this sad trend, I should think it's quite a concern. The advertisements are the stinky necessity for television, radio, and print journalism. They need some profit to pay personnel salaries and for functioning equipment. They can't go out and do the work without the funding from advertising unless they're public and get money from sponsors. I've had QUITE a few friends who've been laid off from television stations over the past several years (most recent casualty list at 30+ where I used to work). The budgets just couldn't handle the personnel #s and the staff who's left behind are all overworked and underpaid. Then again, aren't we all?

Thanks for the pimp, RA!

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Nice blog, Gus. The only bit of news I'm surprised you didn't mention was the unanimous ruling of the Minnesota Supreme Court in Al Franken's favor after a protracted recount that drug this out for 8 months. Someone could've had a baby during that time! That's a loooong time to wait for a Supreme Court turnaround in his favor.

RT @lileks: All this day needs is a picture of little Bubbles the Chimp saluting as MJ's coffin passes.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Ok, I had no choice but to watch some of the memorial because every tv at the gym played the coverage.

I have to say, and I'm not kidding, that memorial terrified me.

Who are those people on the f--king stage? Who the f--k are they? I only recognized a couple. Why are they acting like the deceased was a great man? Why the f--k was the memorial on every television? Why, oh, why, did NPR lead with the story at 3PM? Et tu, NPR? I've never seen the medial make such a big deal, such a SHOWY deal out of any other funeral.

If that weird, horrible display was American, well, I didn't feel like an American today. And I don't think I've ever said that before in my entire life.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments What a farce - that this is what all the news outlets are focussing on. Perhaps some of us would like to hear about Obama's trip to Russia instead?

I'm so glad I'm at work, and nowhere near a tv. All I know about the funeral, I've heard here.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I want to hear about Senator Franken's first days in office. :)

Sandi (sandikal) I haven't watched or listened to the radio news in many, many days. I can't take it. Thanks for the blog post, Gus. I didn't know most of that stuff had happened.

Usako (bbmeltdown) Here ye, here ye, we gather together to place ourselves into His Mortal Spotlight and say unto ye - we are good and popular.

Dunno. Some people I heard that presented to me were there for some publicity. And sorry I gag when Mariah Carey shows up. To me that's like inviting a whore to a funeral. Sorry guys. I know you like bootah ^.~

I find it sad that Farrah who fought her last years against cancer wasn't shown more. I am even more sad when youths say MJ invented the moonwalk and go Fred Astaire who? (sorry. I know i mispelled his name)!

message 19: by Randy (new)

Randy I wish I had an oxygen chamber! Hey, everybody...d'ya ever think about pawning yer tv and buyin' some books...problem solved! Boom!

I think deep down in ya'lls hearts you all thrive on media madness... gives ya somethin' to do...otherwise, there'd be no posts on this thread!

My wife asked me last night why I was hanging out in our office, cleaning out our PC (it's getting slow and there's file space that needs to be cleared) instead of being in the living room with her and our daughter. I told her that if I have to endure one more fucking MJ report, I'm going on a shooting spree.

Then Larry King was on, getting all gravelly-voiced and weepy about Jackson.

I'm fucking done.

Daybook | 6 comments At least the the MJ affair gives Nancy Grace something to whinge on about other than totmom, octomom and hayleigh, cayleigh and all. Why do I watch Nancy Grace? Because her pseudo-sincerity and rotweillering of 'experts' all on a rising tone of disgust are funny.

message 22: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) Gus -> If you are, please do so while wearing the sequin glove and humming Heal the World. As a tribute ;)

That said umm did anyone see the photo of the Chinese students with painted panda faces? for a second I thought they had a MJ gathering ;_;

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

Tanja, I will take that sequined glove and shove it up his rotting corpse and sing "Rock With You".
