How about reading the first book published by a writer? For example, Jo Nesbo's The Bat? Mary Jo

I like the Harry Hole series Mary Jo, though personally I have already read The Bat. I found it quite good and have read others in the series too. I think several of us here enjoy various Norwegian and other international authors. We do appreciate that a group read book is ideally not in the middle of an established series; some of the upcoming books selected are, but many of us have read the first books together already such as Justin Cronin's The Passage, and The Twelve or are long time fans of series like the Lucas Davenport books.
Then of course we have several members who are not rabid about reading in order interspersed with many members who prefer to RIO over all else. :)

My decision to not do the Isles group read was based on it being the 4th book in a series I had not read. Were I not otherwise occupied, I might have read the first 3 books, but that was not possible in this case.In any event, I like the group reads, but don't feel I have to do every one. There will be books I want to read that others will not as well.
Anything, including the phone book, would be better than that Benjamin Black Philip Marlowe fiasco. Mary Jo

Ann, Natchez Burning has definitely gripped me! I listened to it on the ride back from Maine this afternoon and I'm all in. It's hard to be brief in the chapter summaries though, since so much happens. I hope they aren't too long.
Carol: I am sure the summaries are great, and will help immensely when I get caught up with you! I have a library audio loan on Overdrive out that I am going to try to sneak in and then listen to Natchez Burning in a few days. I'm not surprised that it is gripping! We can tentatively slot in The City of Mirrors for January / February 2015 unless a better plan comes up. (boy, that seems like it should be much further away!)I like the idea of not having a big fat book like that for the end of the year either.

Mary Jo: I bet if you wanted to read The Bat and start a spoilers welcome thread on it some of us would chime in or possibly start the book too. I listened to the audio book so might have a bit of trouble fitting into a chapter by chapter thread but remember the book fairly well. I haven't read The Bat yet and I did finally buy it. Don't know when I'll get to it. Maybe I can squeeze in at some point.

Is anyone else planning on reading Natchez Burning besides me and Ann?
I plan on reading NATCHEZ BURNING. :-)
I have read The Quiet Game, and loved it, so I will continue the series, just not sure if I can get to Natchez Burning quick enough. Reading Iles every third book I am reading. But I love his writing!!
We'll be ready to discuss Natchez Burning when you are caught up, Liz! Glad to hear you are in too, Christina! Cop Town is an upcoming selection for July with a June 24 release so we can be sure to have the initial threads on that one ready for anyone wanting to start a stand-alone group read book.
I'll read Natchez Burning but first have to finish Schama's Landscape and Memory and a book by C. S. Lewis's The Great Divorce.
Oh good, I am glad there are folks coming along with Natchez Burning. Whenever you get there is fine!
