Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9483 comments Y'all had me curious so I went to my library consortium website to find out how many copies of Missing You they had (was thinking Ann's 56 was extravagant) and found that mine has 82! It said 4 were available, but I wonder. Didn't test it since I have an epub copy. (Dan I'd offer to borrow one and send it to you but I know how you frown on such library transgressions...)

Our library has one hard copy that is out, can't tell how many on hold and no ecopies. We are a bit behind the times with technology.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16927 comments I saw a book tonight that looked interesting for a future group read, though as a recent release it may not be readily accessible for everyone. I realize several of you are still waiting for Missing You at the library.
The Black-Eyed Blonde: A Philip Marlowe Novel is by Benjamin Black who was asked to write a new book in the vaunted series. Anyone interested, or have some other suggestions?
Publisher's Weekly Review
Black (the pseudonym that John Manville uses for his crime fiction) isn't the first to tackle the daunting challenge of recreating the distinctive narrative voice of Raymond Chandler's world-weary, mean streets-walking L.A. private eye, Philip Marlowe. Despite Robert B. Parker's lengthy experience in the PI genre, his sequel to The Big Sleep, Perchance to Dream, pales in comparison with Black's pitch-perfect recreation of the character and his time and place. As for the language, Black nails Chandler's creative and memorable similes and metaphors. When Marlowe shakes hands with someone, "It was like being given a sleek, cool-skinned animal to hold for a moment or two." The title character, Clare Cavendish, wanders into Marlowe's office to ask him to trace her lover, Nico Peterson, who disappeared two months earlier. The case appears to wrap up quickly after Marlowe learns that Peterson was the victim of a hit-and-run, but Cavendish has some major revelations in store. While the mystery is well plotted, Black elevates it beyond mere thoughtful homage with a plausible injection of emotion in his wounded lead. Author tour. I went and put a hold on this just in case. It was available in CD as well as print. 5 holds on 1 copy for the CD.

I'm open to other suggestions but don't have any of my own. I've got the new ones from Greg Iles, John Sandford and Dennis Lehane on request but they probably won't come in for a while.

message 57: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16927 comments Carol: I think those are good future candidates! It's probably too early to try Natchez Burning in May...
Greg Iles' Natchez Burning is a 4/29 release and Sandford's Field of Prey releases on 5/6. Dennis' World Gone By is August 12 according to Amazon.

BarryP (barrypz) | 3498 comments I'm good with a broad spectrum of books, but will have a "black out" period in the fall where I go to night shift and work massive amounts of overtime. I get very little reading done when I am working 13 hours a day for 6 days a week. They give us a day off to do laundry.

message 59: by Sherry (new)

Sherry | 4517 comments i'm good with any of those- would like to know in advance so i can wait and read the book with the group. if i read it before, i can't remember anything about it..lol

Ann (annrumsey) | 16927 comments Sherry: I agree, knowing in advance can give us time to line up the books and plan our reading pace to fit into the group timetable if desired.
Here are some suggestions - votes?
May: The Black-Eyed Blonde: A Philip Marlowe Novel
June: Natchez Burning
July: Field of Prey
August: Mr. Mercedes
Sept: World Gone By

message 61: by Ann (last edited Apr 19, 2014 12:15PM) (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16927 comments The suggestions do include some series books and are going to be, or are new releases, I am open to anyone else's ideas!
I usually read the prey books out of order anyway and the Greg Iles book is a next up for me in the Penn Cage series.
World Gone By is highly anticipated from Dennis Lehane, the first two books in this set seems more like stand-alones to me, but this one does continue Joe Coughlin's story from Live by Night as Joe broke away from the Boston of his father and brother Danny in The Given Day.
Mr. Mercedes is listed as a June release so perhaps August gives us enough time to get to it or should it be July?

message 62: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) | 3679 comments I've got MR. MERCEDES on order, so would definitely be up for that one! Had intended to start MISSING YOU the other day but only got the first chapter read.

Mary Jo (serenemillie) | 138 comments Great choices. I keep meaning to read B. Black and now I'll have to. I have followed Lehane and would welcome getting back to him. Although I'm a mystery writer (The Lemrow Mystery) I recently joined a group of gardeners and landscape artists and read their selections. It's like a trip to Mars, it's so foreign. We just read IN THE LAND OF THE BLUE POPPIES by Francis Kingdom Ward, an Englishman of the early 20th century. Now, we're tackling Simon Schama's LANDSCAPE AND MEMORY.

I think you can never go wrong with a Dennis Lehane book; though a few of us here don't feel the same way about Shutter Island. ;) I hope you'll be able to join in on our discussions.

LizH (liz_h) | 955 comments Just a caution, but by no means a deterrent, if we suggest any books that are part of a series, how many books are before it...for those of us who are faithful RIO's and can't just read a book in the middle of a series :(

message 72: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16927 comments Good point, Liz! We are all such habitual series readers it does get tough to select stand-alones.

May: The Black-Eyed Blonde: A Philip Marlowe Novel (it depends on how far you want to go back... Philip Marlow #10 (1939 to 1989 eight books by Raymond Chandler, then 1991 Robert B Parker picked up the mantle and now 2014, Benjamin Black.. )
June: Natchez Burning (Penn Cage #4 1999-2009, three before it)
July: Field of Prey (a gazillion... Lucas Davenport #24)
August: Mr. Mercedes (stand alone)
Sept: World Gone By (two before it, see previous post)

in the pile right now- (not sure what's on the kindle..lol)
frog music
shoestring love songs
the new iles when it's released- but if we're going to read it as a group in June, I can wait.
i'll be ready for field of prey in july and mr/ mercedes in august and world gone by in september.
planning ahead helps for me!

and since the marlowe is part of a series and I haven't read any of them, i'll probably pass on that one unless someone (other than ann..lol) can guarantee that it could be read out of order with no horrible consequences!

Hmm, I'm a die-hard RIO as you know and it never occurred to me that the Marlowe's couldn't be read out of order. I always assumed there was no character development in these, but I could be wrong. Someone who's read a few please comment.

No matter what the group decides, that line up in fine with me, if I am not caught up, I can skip the group read.

message 77: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) | 3679 comments I can't imagine that the Marlowe books are any different than the Sam Spade books. I read a few of them when I was about 13 or 14 (my grandad was a fan and I read his copies) and you most definitely didn't need to read them in any order.

message 82: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16927 comments I am excited that the list is starting to come together, so what do we think of this revised line-up?
Suggestions:
May: continue Missing You - (several of us are just getting their copies) and optional to add The Black-Eyed Blonde: A Philip Marlowe Novel - a recurring character going back decades and we think won't be something to have to read in order... :0
June: Natchez Burning - new, a 4/29 release 800 pages! book #4 in Penn Cage. We can set the threads up early for people who want a head start on this BFB!

July: Cop Town stand alone Karin Slaughter June 24 release 416 pages / do we want to add as an "optional since it is a series" #24 Field of Prey?

August: Mr. Mercedes June 3 release stand alone Stephen King 448 pages

Sept: World Gone By ?? Dennis Lehane 416 pages, series book #3 August 12 release, but no cover image or page count for a hardback yet on Amazon... that one might be different release timing?

I think all of these would merit at least 45 days to the window listed, maybe 60 days... a little overlap never hurt right?

message 83: by Sherry (new)

Sherry | 4517 comments looks good to me, ann. i like knowing in advance what we're going to read so i can plan for that!
for me, cop town and field of prey would both be rather quick reads so i'm good with discussing both in july.

I could do this. I find Slaughter over-the-top violent, so I hope she tones it down a bit here, but the female copy partners sounds intriguing.

Donnajo | 4354 comments I back again. it will take me awhile to do catching up. only was able to get online once from the library parking lot when it was closed I set up the cable company I have wifi on my ipad mini thinking I could connect to the location in the municipal parking lot across and up from the house or the inlet two locations my bil said you can sometimes get it and it just wouldn't let me connect. it was a here one second, gone the next. and we were so busy before easter and the last two days I didn't walk over to give it another try with the ipad. but I asked my bil and it doesn't look like he's the internet set up again until some time in May. as for our book. not much of it got read. I did finish 2 other books and started another which I'm almost finished with. now I came back with 4 arcs from one street team that I have to read/review and I still have another one from another author I'm supposed to read/review. so don't know how much reading I'll get in missing you in the next day or so.
I think besides the time I was without a computer this is the longest I've gone without getting online. talk about withdrawal.

Donnajo | 4354 comments At the new/used bookstore yesterday I almost took the arc of Iles new book but you are supposed to only take one book and I already had 2 that I really wanted to read. maybe if I get though those fast I go back the iles book will still be there. haha with all the arcs I have like that would really happen.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16927 comments No bookcover image yet, so who knows of the accuracy, but Justin Cronin's The City of Mirrors now shows an Oct 23, 2014 publication date. We have plenty of time to decide if it is a January 2015 or Nov-Dec 2014 Group read (if we want to continue our group read of the trilogy started with The Passage and The Twelve.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16927 comments I agree, Barry and Carol! We have invested a good amount of time with the first two Cronin books and I am excited to have the third book's release date to look forward to; knowing when to watch for it may help with lining up our copies. I got a lot more out of the other two books with our group discussions.
Carol! So now I see I should slot Natchez Burning as my next up audio. A spoiler thread with comments I can't read yet is tantalizing! I am halfway in with The Bone Season, I am probably a week away from getting there.
