Gbolahan (halosbane-kitchenstaffpikin) | 157 comments Hi guys.
Read this between 1999 and 2004.
Cover was torn off.
A collection of science fiction short stories where each story dealt with a real science.
Eg;
1. The medical story had a super medical kit accidentally drop from the future into our present time, where it was picked up by a...washed out doctor that used it to return himself to fame and fortune. The Super medical kit had instruments that never rusted, could be used multiply as they were easily sterilized, incisions made by them healed back with no side effects, eg, you could cut your arm half off and it would heal back almost immediately. He had an assistant and he became rich, keeping the kit a secret. She accidentally kills him while trying to convince him to allow other scientists to examine the super kit, and reproduce it so they can own the patent rights, I think, and cuts him into pieces and burns him piece by piece in the incinerator of the medical kit, a bloodless procedure. Meanwhile, the owners of the medical kit in the future were looking for the kit, hoping to remotely shut it down with a signal. The assistant calls in a possible buyer/scientist/marketer for the kit, and demonstrates the wonders of the kit by cutting her own neck with its scalpel while the buyer watches. Meanwhile, the owners in the future press the button to remotely shut down the kit...
2. The chemistry story had a guy on another planet where the natives routinely killed a young female of theirs for their bones to get a certain kind of colour for their rituals. This guy convinced them he could find a rock that would forever substitute the bones of the young females, and they gave him a few hours to find the rock before the next ritual killing of the next young female, who I think he was in love with.
3. The astronomy/space travel story was where the inhabitants of Jupiter wanted to get out and kill every lifeform. Human authority was convinced they'd never be able to do it, because forcefields (in theory and in practice) weren't strong enough to hold in a Jupiter level atmosphere - much less a terran level of atmosphere - without blowing up the generator... until (view spoiler).

Sorry for all the spoilers and my detailing, but I really enjoyed this collection of short stories and hope to find it again.
Thank you.

Justanotherbiblophile | 1814 comments #3 Could be one of Asimov's, where the inhabitants of Jupiter wanted to get out and kill every lifeform. Human authority was convinced they'd never be able to do it, because forcefields (in theory and in practice) weren't strong enough to hold in a Jupiter level atmosphere - much less a terran level of atmosphere - without blowing up the generator... until (view spoiler)

And the intersection of those two stories is:

Also, you can just say "stolen", when you spot one with the cover torn off (if you're in the US). :)

Gbolahan (halosbane-kitchenstaffpikin) | 157 comments Thanx stormhawk and Justanotherbiblophile. The book is Time Probe:The Sciences in Science Fiction. Lovely book. Trying to get my hands on another copy.
I don't really understand what Justanotherbiblophile meant by "stolen". I think it was my uncle's book that he'd kept for years until his (then) little kids laid their hands on it and tore off the cover and some pages.
Thanx once again.
