Why do you think Constantin not sleep with Esther?

There can be a deeper underlying note that I might have missed somewhere. Or may be there isn't.

Well, throughout the book Esthers idea of sex is warped, because of her bad experiences with men. She eventually assumes every man is going to want sexual favors. But that is not the case with Constantin. He's actually very friendly and she's confused by this. I think if there is an underlying note, its that Esther simply can't trust men anymore, because she cannot believe that a man would treat her kindly without asking for sex in return.
