No spoiler tags required. Though it would be highly appreciated if you Uncheck Add to my Update Feed to avoid accidentally spoiling this for your goodreads friends.

Please do not discuss events from later chapters. Referring back to events from a previous section/book is fine.

This section covers the 3rd Cithrin chapter through to the 4th Geder chapter. The first sentence of the section is:

Northeast in Narinisle, the grey stone city of Stollbourne, center of the bluewater trade.

Bill | 1596 comments First off let me just say Lindsay really nailed the division of the sections. The first section ended with King Simeons death and this section ends with Gedar insanely casually mentioning that he is going to execute the entire ruling caste of Asterilhold. So well done Lindsay.

So firstly with Cithrin I am so glad she left Porte Olivia and the whole Pyk situation behind. I think the intrigue being at the holding company and Caminpol will be much more interesting. Can't wait for her to cross paths with Gedar again. I think part of his prophecy in book one was about meeting her and how each time he does it will dictate a drastic change.

While Cithrin leaving was a good move for her it seems to have left Marcus kind of stagnant. Think he will probably take Kit up on his offer. I did find his interactions with the pirates entertaining.

Dawson is getting a bit tiresome with his need to have things always his was. I find Clara sections much more insightful in the workings of the court and noble families. I liked her handling of her daughters.

Gedar is insane. I imagine his leaving the book behind will end up getting the tutor killed. The spider goddess cult has probably been altering knowledge in books to their advantage. Think Gedar mentions not being able to find anything about them in any text.

I'm curious if Lindsay intentionally split the books up this way, or got really lucky. For me it's always been the latter.

Cithrin's storyline starts to be my favorite in this book I believe.

Clara >> Dawson

And yes, Gedar is nuts. It's part of the fun!

Lindsay | 546 comments I just got really lucky.

I decided it was going to be 4 sections, did the math and split them on chapter boundaries.

Bill | 1596 comments Well it worked out perfectly.

As much as I felt the first section was about power, I felt that this section was all about identity.

If Cithrin is not the magistra of the bank in Porte Oliva (and she's not, she's just a figurehead), then who is she?

If Marcus is not Cithrin's adoptive father then who is he?

If Dawson is not loyal to the Regent then is he a traitor?

It's interesting how they're all redefining themselves.

Bill | 1596 comments Very true. It is interesting how they are all also forcing themselves into more difficult lifestyles instead of just accepting the situations and letting themselves reap the rewards.
