No spoiler tags required. Though it would be highly appreciated if you Uncheck Add to my Update Feed to avoid accidentally spoiling this for your goodreads friends.

Please do not discuss events from later chapters. Referring back to events from a previous section/book is fine.

This section covers the Introduction (Master Kit) through to the 2nd Clara chapter. The first sentence of the section is:

The apostate, called Kitap rol Keshmet among other things, stood in the soft city rain, the taint in his blood pressing at him, goading him, but being ignored.

Bill | 1596 comments This was a true table setting section. Nothing really happened until the last sentence of the section "The king is dead". Feel like that should finally get things moving.

I would rather have seen Cithrin have to overcome issues that arise due to the intricacies of the banking system than someone that has taken her power.

Gedar is so inconsistent a character that I don't really know how I feel about him. I thought his victories and knowledge gained in the last book would have given him some spine but he seems to revert to almost being childlike in some situations.

Master Kit against the spider goddess should be interesting but so much is unknown at this point.

I've gone back and forth on Gedar in this series. Guy could use some anger management counseling..

Suzanne | 1582 comments I agree - its SO hard to judge Gedar. He always has what to him is a good reason.

Glad to hear it.

Lindsay | 546 comments These books just suck me in every time.

Dawson and Clara are fascinating. Dawson would be best described as a fascist in modern terms and he's deeply committed to his feudalistic politics, but he still comes across as very sympathetic. In his world view, the world is chaos and it's only through tradition and order that anything can be trusted. He would be truly horrible were it not for Clara's influence. That's where she truly shines. Even though she acknowledges that her power comes from who she's married to and that's out of her control, she deftly wields and is well aware of that power in ways that most other people in her situation probably would not be.

In fact, when you look at where Cithrin is at the moment, and Geder's imminent Regency, there's a strong theme of power and the uses of it here.

Are you all listening to this on audiobook? Is that why you're writing his name as Gedar instead of Geder?

Bill | 1596 comments Haha um no just keep misspelling it and everyone is probably just going off mine since they aren't actively reading it. :)

Good point on Dawson/Clara. I think the only thing that keeps Dawson sympathetic in my mind is his family. If he didn't have the likeable Clara and Jorey I don't think he would be at all redeemable. Without them he is kind of the ugliest character in the series. Geder at least has the fact that he is kind of insane working for him. Dawson views on the treatment of nobility vs. commoners are pretty ludicrous.

Suzanne | 1582 comments Yes that's a good analysis of the Dawson and Clara. I agree that Dawson's views on class are bad. I like the relationship the two of them have with each oher and with their children. And...anything else I can think of to say is spoilerie.
