143. I am losing track of what is real and what is fabricated in the characters’ minds. When Pycelle tells Cersei that Margaery was asking for Moon Tea, this is proof that Margaery is doing the deed with someone other than her (too young for doing the deed) husband. Now, did Pycelle make it up to appease Cersei, or is it really true? Cersei had been pushing one of the Kettleblacks to sleep with the young Queen, did it finally happen when Loras went away? Or could she be sleeping with someone else? Or was she really sleeping with her brother? Maybe she was asking for it to intentionally cause suspicion, but that would be a very dangerous game to play, no?

I have no idea.

144. Did I miss something? Why is the singer accused? Were his confessions true or torture-created? How about that torture scene? **shudders**

I think they were torture created.

I couldn't resist starting a little early! I'm planning on reading this one in small chunks along with my other BRs, so it could take me a while, but I find the ASOIAF series worthy of savouring.

Interesting to see on the previous page which characters appear in this book and which don't - I'd heard that some were missing but I wasn't exactly sure who. Pleased to see more from Brienne and really looking forward to more of Jaime - his story arc in the last book was fascinating!

Prologue - Chapter 3 (Cersei)

(view spoiler)[1) This book is entitled 'A Feast For Crows'. Going in to this one what do you think the significance of the title could be?

Crows are scavengers, so it makes me think about how when a large animal dies, other animals move in to feast on the corpse. I wonder who they're feasting on - lions? Probably not wolves since they're mainly gone. I doubt it's anything to do with the Nights Watch as Jon isn't in this book.

2) Any ideas as to who the alchemist was and what he'd use the key for? I was trying to rack my brain about the description and was wondering if it might be Varys or the guy who killed for Arya?

I don't think it's Varys - it didn't seem like his normal style, as he normally gets others to do his dirty work for him. It could definitely be that guy that killed for Arya though because I'm sure we'll be seeing him again (I can't remember how to spell his name!)

3) So the Grejoys are undecided who should rule. Anyone else think this could get interesting?

More battles for thrones! I haven't found the Ironmen too interesting so far so it'll be nice to find out more about them via this storyline. I hope we see Theon again but I don't think he's going to get the throne.

4) What did you think of the way Greyjoy died? Death by fall? Could Melisandre have had a hand in this one?

There's something odd about it. Seems a little too easy.

5) Anyone notice the change in houses for the Starks listed in the back of the book? Now they're listed with the other houses and aren't listed as one of the dominant ones anymore.

I haven't looked at the character list (I'm on my kindle so it's more difficult to flick back and forth.) I guess with most of the Starks dead and only a small amount of Arya and Sansa in this book they're not really a big power for this volume.

6) I now get the expression Damphair - Damp hair. I kept thinking of dhampir. Why? I have no idea.

I just keep confusing Aeron with the other similar names we've heard before - but they're all Targaryens!

7) What do you think of the drowning? At first I thought it was like baptism. I'm not thinking that anymore.

It's super weird. Seems like the different factions on Westeros have got some weird religions. It sounds like not all of the Ironborn are totally into the idea of drowning though - Aeron was sceptical of how effective the process was on babies. It weirded me out a little when it mentioned that other priests lose men from time to time - so it is a potentially fatal process.

8) Did I miss something? What is a Kingsmoot? Where is a glossary when you need one?

Sounds like a process by which a new king is elected. I hope it's gory.

9) First thoughts of Prince Oberyn's daughters, Obara, Nymeria, Tyene?

I love them! More spunky lady characters, yay. I'm really looking forward to reading more about the sand snakes and finding out more about Dorne.

10) Any predictions about what will happen to Prince Doran?

I don't think he's going to last the book. Seems like he's well respected but he's not well. It doesn't sound like the Dornish would fight over his empty throne though in the way everybody else seems to be!

11) Anyone think the Lannisters will start dwindling in numbers in this book?

Well I quite like Jaime after the last book so I hope he sticks around. And I hate Cersei, but I love to hate her so I hope she sticks around too! Maybe some of their followers and other relatives will start to disappear.

12) Thoughts on Cersei and the way she treated Jaime?

I just hate Cersei, she's deliciously evil. I can't wait for Tyrion to get his revenge on her. Team Tyrion! (hide spoiler)]

Jon, Tyrion and Dany are my favourites. I think the fact that they're missing from this is why a lot of people consider this to be a weak point of the series. At least we know there should be plenty of them in book 5!

I finally made some headway in this book. It was so hard to get through The Prophet (chp. 1) for some reason. But the end of that chapter was good. A kingmoot? Reminds me of an entmoot from Lord of the Rings. I'm looking forward to seeing where that goes. I was also excited by the next two chapters that brought us back to where Book 3 ended. I'm getting enveloped in Westeros again, so hopefully the rest will be smooth sailing.

Questions for Prologue - Chp. 3 (Cersei)

1) This book is entitled 'A Feast For Crows'. Going in to this one what do you think the significance of the title could be?
Either there's going to be a lot of death and carnage that crows can feast on, or the crows refer to the men on the Wall and there will be a lot of some kind of action facing them. But the titles of these books are so general that they could be for any of the books in the series: A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords - yes, all this happens in all the books!

2) Any ideas as to who the alchemist was and what he'd use the key for? I was trying to rack my brain about the description and was wondering if it might be Varys or the guy who killed for Arya?
I have no idea who that alchemist was nor why he wanted that key. I was worried that I had a whole bunch of new names to remember, but now I'm wondering if the alchemist is the only one I need to remember from that prologue.

Oh yes they're about to have a clash of kings within their own family! I don't like that Aeron doesn't want Asha to rule just because she's a woman. Jerk! :P

That seems like a silly, random way for him to have died. I would definitely suspect Melisandre of sending a spirit to push him over the edge, but I didn't think she was concerned about the Greyjoys at the moment. Maybe another Greyjoy wanted to be king and had someone push Balon to his death.

Oh no! How sad. No, I didn't look at the listings in the back. That ending of the last book broke my heart for the Starks. Poor Arya. She was almost back with her mom! Now it's just kids trying to survive. The Starks seemed like the good guys of the book too, so now it's hard to say who I'd want to be king. I guess it should rightfully be Stannis, but he gives me the creeps, especially with that witchy woman he's always with. I wish Jon Snow could be a contender!

I only have an inkling because of the entmoot in the Lord of the Rings which was a gathering/meeting of all those living trees to decide what course of action the group would take. So I'm guessing that's the same thing here: all the clan getting together to decide who they want to be king.

Tough chicks! It seems like they are more accepted as strong warriors whereas Brienne was not as accepted. Curious. I doubt that the Caption of the Guard will be able to round all of them up, not unless he arranges for them all to be taken by surprise at the same time. They seem to tough to go down without a fight.

10) Any predictions about what will happen to Prince Doran?
He seems to be trying to appease Lord Tywin, but little does he know that Tywin is dead. So I don't know what's going to happen to him, especially now that he's about to make enemies of all eight of the Sandsnakes.

I hope so! After they dwindled the Stark family so, they deserve it!

12) Thoughts on Cersei and the way she treated Jaime?
Jamie seemed like a decent guy after he became friends with Brienne. I wonder if he was always that kind of guy or if getting to know Brienne changed him. Cersei is so terrible that I don't know what in the world he sees in her. Why does he like her!!!? I think Jamie did have a good side since he was kind to Tyrion, but I don't see anything good about Cersei. Having a line into her thoughts in this book will be interesting. I wonder if she'll be humanized a bit. So far in that third chapter -- no, she's still a jerk!

13) Do you think Tyrion is long gone?
I think so. I hope so. Run as fast as those little feet will take you, because you may have been innocent of Joffrey's death, but now it doesn't much matter since you've killed Tywin. (hide spoiler)]

14) We now know Brienne is looking for Sansa and she isn't the only one. Why do you think she left her "friends"? To get away from her competition so to speak or for another reason?

I think she feels like she can't trust anyone other than herself to find and protect Sansa. The amount of crass comments she received from men about Sansa alone would get her on her guard. And it's impossible to know who's loyal to who after all that's kicked off!

15) Do you think the rumors of Brienne killing Renly will ultimately lead to her demise?

No, I don't think so. He was an enemy of the other "kings" after all so I don't see why the Lannisters or Stannis would have a problem with her for that.

16) Interesting only Jaime's teasing bothered Brienne. Could she perhaps have feelings for him? Could you imagine Cersei's reaction if Jaime were to pick Brienne over her. :)

I totally want Brienne and Jaime to happen, and I have for most of the previous book too! Cersei's reaction would be priceless and I actually think that Jaime and Brienne are equals, so would be a good match. Please let this happen, please.

17) What did you think of the mouse transition between chapters 4 & 5? Wonder why Martin did that? Is there a hidden meaning? Could it represent spies or something?

I think I missed something here?

18) Samwell is hunting for information about the Others. Not much new information to be had. Just a reaffirming of what is there. Do you think that Jon should have sent Samwell away? Do you think he resents being voted to his current position? Interesting how many Stark relatives seemed to have taken the position as Wall commander.

I love little tidbits about the history of Westeros. Like Jon being the fifth youngest commander. The world building is just excellent. I can totally see why Jon wants Sam to become his new maester - it would be a really good role for him! Sounds like it was an early ambition of his though that his father took badly to, so there'll be a lot of issues there to work out. And we might get to find out what happened in the prologue.

19) Had to chuckle at the nick name "Sam the Seducer". Why do you think Gilly fled the way she did from Samwell? Why did she not like him calling her Lady?

I think Gilly's out of her depth. She's lived her entire life in a colony of women with only one man present - Crastor - who was both her husband and her father. Now she's surrounded by men and everybody is gossiping about her and Sam. I just think she's uncomfortable.

20) Dragonsteel = Valyrian steel? Could this be a lost reason as to why a weapon forged of valyrian steel is so cherished and prized?

Not sure about this one.

21) What is so awful about becoming a maester?

Chopping up bodies, apparently! I think maesters get the short end of the stick, often. If you get a position in a good house, then fine. But it seems like a lot of them are at the bottom of the pecking order, despite their numerous skills.

22) What the heck?????? Why is everything associated with R'hllor so Creepy???? What were your thoughts on the city Arya is in? Why do they not like her being a Stark?

The city sounded amazing when Arya was sailing up to it but the temple that she's in is super creepy. I kind of want to know more but I kind of want her to get out of there, stat. Maybe the people there just don't want any association with the war, and they know that the Starks were up to their necks in it.

23) Funeral was pretty uneventful. Thoughts on poor Lancel? Do you think her uncle knows about the affair?

Not with Lancel, at least not yet. It might come out though, seeing as everybody now seems to believe the rumours about her and Jaime. I feel like Lancel's got a lucky escape actually, getting away from her. Even if he does have to marry a Frey girl. Cersei's thought about not letting the girl's grandfather host the wedding made me laugh! Then I felt bad about laughing because poor Robb :-(

24) Shocker!!! Ser Kevan was a surprise. Did you see his ultimatum coming?

Yessss, go Kevan! I think he's fed up of everybody dying on Cersei's watch. Jon Arryn, then Robert, then Joffrey, then Tywin... I think he's realised that it's time for a new regent.

25) I don't think it's right to marry Margaret to Tommen.

I kind of feel bad for Margaery. She's been married twice - once to Renly who preferred men, and once to Joffrey who was, well, Joffrey. I forget how old she is, 16? But it can't be pleasant for her, and Tommen is defintiely too young for marriage.

26) What did you think of Lady Merryweather, the only person who supposedly impressed Cersei?

She sounds like she has an interesting background. I'm interested to see how important a role she plays later on.

27) What did you think of Cersei's reaction to Lolly naming her child after Tywin?

I guess the child would have a bastard surname and I suppose she wouldn't want a child with that surname to carry a lord's first name. So I can understand why she was opposed to it, but there was no need to be so rude.

I'm guessing that if Brienne does find Sansa, if she were with others, they could fight her to take Sansa and return her for the reward. So she probably figures she'll be safer on her own.

Hmm, I hadn't thought of that. I don't think so. That is annoying, though, when people believe rumors about you. I hope to see Brienne find a group of people who will respect her skills and be true friends to her. Hopefully she will survive to the end of this book! Never can tell with this series.

Oh, Cersei would disown Jaime! Brienne respects Jamie now, but I don't really see a romantic future for them. At least, not with each other. I do hope that Jaime finds a non-relative to fall in love with. 'Twould do him some good!

Since Sam is more book smart than smart with a sword, he would probably make a good maester. I don't quite understand why he is so reluctant. But I agree with Lord Snow sending him away because with all the battles they probably have coming up to fight the Others, they're going to need help with healing and tending wounds.

I don't think he's with Tyrion, if they got caught together they'd both be killed. Varys is probably lying low, he's got all sorts of sources he could use.

I definitely think she's safe for now. If she reminds Petyr of Catelyn then he won't let her come to harm. I have a feeling he might try it on again though.

I think he's mainly Petyr but on the surface he's Littefinger because he had to be to survive and get ahead in King's Landing. It will be interesting to see how he develops in the rest of this book.

36) Is there still hope for little Robert? What do you think of Sansa taking care of him? I'm wondering if he has epilepsy?

Epilepsy makes sense. It's a good thing that Sansa is taking care of him as much as she can bear to, I don't think anybody else is watching out for him.

Go Asha! I want her to be the first female ruler. I don't think they'll let her, though, she'll really have to prove herself. I don't think she's as conniving as Cersei.

No, but that's because I've seen the show. I'm assuming we find out what happened to him in this book, and the producers just brought it forward to fit with the timeline better.

I didn't mind it. They changed Robert to Robin too. Means that people who haven't read the books are less likely to get confused.

Margaery needs time with Tommen to get him wrapped around her finger. She's going to need an ally to protect herself from Cersei.

Myrcella being queen could reunite the lands more, but I doubt King's Landing would go for it.

44. OK, so it took a long time to sink in that Randyll Tarly is Sam’s father. I am a little slow. After witnessing how brutal he is when dispensing his justice, I have to say it must have been very difficult for Sam growing up, and also, how could Sam be related to this guy? It is odd thinking of Sam as his son.

45. Brienne has proven herself capable of taking on the role of knight. Why is Tarly so against it? Do you suppose he is threatened by her?
Yep. And I'm getting tired of hearing all the name calling and violence against women in this book. I don't know if I can take another book of this.

I can completely sympathize with her now and I felt bad for being annoyed at her. So, Jon switched them so that Melisandre would not kill sacrifice Mance Raydar’s baby, but how can he condone any baby being killed sacrificed? Not sure I follow the logic in this one.
I wonder what in the world he threatened Gilly with to get her to leave her baby.

I am sure Randlyll will not be happy to see them. I hate that no one but the Night's Watch and now Stannis are concerned about the Others coming to kill everyone. You're all about to die! But I do hope that Brienne helps Sam since she clearly isn't going to find Sansa.

I don't know, it's really difficult to tell what's really happening when we're looking at it from Cersei's point of view because she's so paranoid. It's going to be interesting to see the Tyrell vs Lannister power struggle now Tommen and Margaery are married (Team Tyrell! I love Lady Olenna, she's great). I definitely think the Tyrell's would spy on Cersei, she's not exactly proved herself trustworthy, and they know how she treated Sansa.

I think it's a symbolism thing, and possibly just wanting to win a dispute with Cersei. I think they're also conscious that this is Margaery's third marriage, and maybe they just want her and Tommen to bond a bit more, and ensure that Margaery actually gets something out of this marriage.

Gotta bring more people into the war, we're down to only Tommen, Stannis and Dany, although she's not directly involved yet. I like the idea of a queen ruling in her own right, and from the little something we've seen of Myrcella she seems to have something that Tommen lacks. Will be interesting to see how this divides the Lannisters.

I think he's legitimate, he was just a mummy's boy who was mistreated by his father quite significantly because his father believed him 'soft'. There were mentions of being put in chains earlier because he wanted to be a maester. Randall seems like a difficult guy to grow up with.

I think he's a massive misogynist and just can't handle women in positions of strength (like Brienne being a knight) or men being in submissive roles (like Sam being a maester). He's just not a nice man.

I'm assuming we'll get Jon's logic in the next book when we get chapters from his point of view again. I think he's not as sympathetic towards Gilly as Sam is. And hey, Gilly's son could be being looked after quite well at Castle Black for all we know. I have faith in Jon.

I think he'd be happy to know their relationship has changed in that way. Something is definitely going to happen; we're hearing so much from Cersei that it must be going somewhere.

49. Jaime doubts Tyrion’s words about Lancel and Cersei but not about his killing King Joffrey. Is that frustrating or what?

I think it's due to the fact that Jaime was always closer to Tyrion than Cersei, and believes that Tyrion would hurt Cersei but not him maybe? Jaime seemed not be too fond of Joffrey, even though he's his son.

50. Why would Bronn, now Ser Bronn of the Blackwater, have Lollys’s child named Tyrion? Was this his smartest move, considering? Does he still have some loyalty toward Tyrion, or is he just thumbing his nose at Cersei?

It's a thumbing his nose move, for definite. The kid isn't his so he doesn't feel the need to protect him, and probably went ahead with the name without thinking of the consequences.

51. What is with having the large skull of Ser Gregor cleaned by beetles before it is presented to Prince Doran in recompense for the murders of his sister, Elia (wife of Prince Rhaegar Targaryen), her child Prince Aegon, and Prince Oberyn Martell, the Red Viper? To obscure any dissimilarity? If the leeches that were put to Ser Gregor died, why were the beetles able to eat his flesh?

I thought it was just to get rid of the rotting flesh. I didn't pay much attention to this bit though.

52. Which Queen will Taena Merryweather ultimately side with: Cersei or Margaery? Why would Cersei let her know about her scheming with Ser Osney Kettleblack after Jamie warned her she is Margaery’s spy?

I think Taena will side with whoever wins the power struggle. Cersei is playing a clever but dangerous game with her, and it will probably backfire.

53. What was Jaime trying to tell Loras in that history lesson?

I don't know. Probably trying to bring him down a peg or two.

54. Where do I begin with Cersei? I guess I’ll follow Sandy’s suit, and go with more rambling questions about her: Which of her decisions will bring her downfall? Selecting Lord Qyburn for (her) small council and thinking him oh so clever? Appointing Ser Harys Swyft as (her) “hostage” Hand? Overindulging in drink, especially at small council meetings? Underestimating Jaime’s ability and making fun of him? Ignoring the “sparrows” invading King’s Landing? Thinking one High Septon will serve as well as the other? Not becoming involved in the politics of the Vale? Believing House Bolton would settle for half of the north after being promised the whole? Not paying the Iron Bank or the Faith of the Seven their due? Giving command of the royal navy to Aurane Waters, a man of questionable background and not exactly known for his fidelity? Counting on Lord Walder Frey’s death before it happens, or that his family will fight among themselves once he is gone? Believing a White Harbor alliance can be so easily achieved? Planning to assassinate Jon Snow by way of Ser Osney Kettleblack? Or ignoring the rumor of dragons?

All of them are mistakes, obviously. I don't know which will bite her first, though. I want to know more about the Iron Bank; I think something will happen there.

55. You impression of Victarion? Would he have made a good king? Was he justified in beating his wife to death? Should he have thrown his support behind his niece, Asha? Can he forgive his brother, the Crow’s Eye, Euron; accept and honor him as the king to sit in the Seastone Chair?

I didn't get much of an impression of his character from his chapter. He seemed well intentioned but maybe slightly ineffectual. And no, he wasn't justified in beating his wife to death.

56. What did you think of the kingsmoot? I actually liked Asha’s speech and she almost swayed me to her side. Alas, her nuncle, the Crow’s Eye, Euron, won the day. Think there will be dissention in the ranks?

I liked this scene! I can imagine it coming across really well in the series. Asha did well, and I wonder if she's going to accept the decision or fight against Euron. Sounds like with all his talk of dragons that the Iron island storyline might cross Dany's in the future. (hide spoiler)]

I finally finished this behemoth! Final thoughts: (view spoiler)[ I had thought that Myrcella would be the prettier queen who was predicted to replace Cersei, but now with Myrcella wounded and with Cersei imprisoned, maybe it really will be Margaery who replaces Cersei. I'm so glad she finally isn't getting away with her lies and deception! And I'm so glad that Jamie is leaving her to her fate! Yes! Don't go and rescue her -- let her pay for the wrongs she has done. I was bored with Samwell, Alayne, and all the others, even Arya who used to be my favorite character to follow. At least Brienne's story got interesting at the end. I wonder if she's really dead. (hide spoiler)] I was getting frustrated that nothing really exciting was happening and none of the stories from the previous book were being resumed, but then at the end the author says that he couldn't fit everything in one book, so he put some stories in this book and the rest of the characters' stories in the next book. So darn, I should have read A Dance with Dragons first! At least that would have resumed all the cliffhangers from Book 3. Ugh!

Why did Dick Crabb (Nimble Dick) take Brienne to Whispers, the ruined castle on Crackclaw Point, if he knew that he had conned Shagwell, Timeon and Pyg by selling them a map to that local? Wouldn’t he have expected their wrath? Or did Dick really believe Shagwell was that much of a fool – and inept to boot? He couldn’t have expected them to actually have found smugglers in a cove that hasn’t been active for over 30 years. I don’t get it.

I think he was just trying to get Brienne's gold dragons any way he could, so by taking her to a fool.

58. Were you proud of Podrick or what? Throwing stones at Shagwell – ha! I’m glad he is with Brienne. Oh, well. Might as well not get too attached. If I like him, he won’t last too much longer.

I've always liked Podrick. I like him in the series too.

59. The BIG questions are:
a) What will happen to Arianne now? (Assuming Areo Hotah is in her father’s employ. As captain of Doran Martell's guards, he arrested the Sand Snakes on his orders…so it stands to reason he remains his loyal servant despite any fondness he has for the "little princess" – as he affectionately calls Arianne.)

I think she'll be locked up with the Sand Snakes now. I don't think she appears in this book again having looked at the list of chapters, which is a shame because I was enjoying seeing a bit more of Dorne.

b) Who was it that told of her plans? Was he/she present at the ambush?

I'm not sure on this one, will wait and see.

c) Where is Arianne younger brother, Quentyn? (Not to be confused with disgraced former maester Qyburn, in Cersei’s employ.)

I think if he was in line for the throne he's staying well out of it, and making himself look good.

d) What is the extent of injury to Princess Myrcella? Is she really Princess Myrcella or is she Rosamund?

I don't think anything fatal - I think Myrcella might become a bigger player fairly soon in the series.

60. What do you think of the “kindly man”? Does he have Arya’s best interests at heart? He keeps asking who she is; when is she going to ask who he is?

I find the whole temple thing weird, it's really not where I imagined Arya's story arc going. I definitely think he's hiding something.

61. Did you think for even a second that Arya would toss Needle into the canal’s water?

No, never. Not after everything she went through to get it back.

62. Okay, confused again. I didn’t understand the story about the firewyrms, nor the part about: “Will I be like her?” “No,” he said, “not unless you wish it. It is the poisons that have made her as you see her.” What does emptying a stone flagon into the water of the black pool have to do with anything?

I didn't pay attention to the firewyrm bit, I have to admit. But with the poison thing the people who drink the water die, right? Which means that the waif is adding the poison to the water to have this effect. I just thought it was something to do with the fumes or handling the poison every day had some weird anti-aging effect on her.

63. Arya, as Cat, is now to be more than just an acolyte. Will she learn not only how to detect lies, but change her face while in the House of Black and White in Braavos? Will she have to take poisons to do so? Pretty handy skills, those. Whatever will she do with them?

I thought the changing faces thing was meant to take years? I'm sure she'll learn something though that'll be useful to her in terms of killing the people on her list.

64. What is going to happen when “Alayne” runs out of hair dye?

I'm sure Littlefinger has some sort of plans for her. Maybe she won't be at the Eerie much longer.

65. "Gold and boys and promises…" Just what are Littlefinger's “promises”? Does this mean Littlefinger might swing both ways – if it benefits his plans? Or, since House Corbray of Heart’s Home is a noble – if poor – house did he conspire with Littlefinger mainly for gold?

As Queen, I think she's reached the end of her story arc. I think more could happen with her if she ended up exiled but I think I'd rather see her dead. And that doesn't happen often!

Didn't Robert joust too, when he was younger? Anyway, everybody seems to know that Tommen is Jaime's anyway.

I think with the Queen of thorns behind her, she's dangerous. She's possibly a little young still to be dangerous on her own. I'd really like some of Margaery's POV at some point, actually.

Perhaps the Targaryens knew that it would be dangerous to have the Lannisters so close - maybe they thought that Tywin would make a play for the throne and decided the Dornish were safer.

74) Interesting how when we looked at Jaime's thoughts we ended up liking him. This is not the case with Cersei. What do you think would be a fitting demise for Cersei? Do you think Tommen will survive till the end of the series? The end of the book?

Surely Martin can't kill EVERY Lannister? I know that Tyrion made a prediction for her about her come-uppance and that's got to come true.

I can't figure out his motives yet, either. I'm going to need another Brienne chapter to get a better picture of him.

I don't, seeing as the "ha, they're not dead!" stunt has already happened with Catelyn (BTW WHERE IS SHE???). I thought it might just be old information from the last time he was seen alive?

Nymeria will be back, I'm sure. Possibly not til Arya returns to Westeros with whatever skills she picks up in Braavos.

Done! Once I got into the last third of the book I found it picked up pace significantly, so it was a much easier read from that point. I've been away from my laptop so I'm just going to skip to the last two sets of discussion questions rather than doing them all retrospectively.

Questions for Chapters 40 (The Princess in the Tower) - Chapter 41 (Alayne)

(view spoiler)[147) Wow! What a revelation. Arianne was to be Dany's sister-in-law. No doubt as to whose side that group is on. I can't help wondering why they agree to marry Myrcella into the family in the first place? Is this one of those keep your enemies close things?

I loved that tidbit! And I'm really hoping this comes into play in later books. I'm assuming that marrying Myrcella into the family is a keeping your enemies close thing; or maybe they're just trying to get as many Martells as possible as close as possible to the Westeros throne.

148) Poor Myrcella is scarred for life and missing an ear.

Still not sure if it was definitely her and not her lookalike? But poor Myrcella.

149) Dorne is still hers, but will there me greater punishment than her being locked up? Looks like she truly had feelings for Ayrs.

I think they're going to find somebody else for her to marry now. Arianne has so much potential for great plot.

150) Do you think Quentyn is with Dany or on his way to be with her?

Don't know, guess I'll find out in the next book.

Lady of the Vale! But what about her marriage to Tyrion? Is there divorce in Westeros??

I've always sort of thought he's going to hit on her. Although will he carry on if he marries her off to Harry?

153) Do you think little robert is too sick to survive? Could they be poisoning him? The asking about blood just made me wonder.

Petyr seems to think he won't survive. He definitely doesn't seem like he has much of a future ahead of him.

154) I think Sansa loves her cousin Robert even if he is a pain. He seems to rely on her. She's taking the place of his mother. What are your thoughts on all this?

They're each others last living relatives, so I think that's what's forming the base of their bond. Although I suppose Robert doesn't realise she's related to him.

155) Thoughts of Myranda Royce? Could she give Sansa trouble?

She could potentially become a close confidante, or could cause a lot of trouble. I don't think I've seen enough of her yet to figure her out. (hide spoiler)]

Didn't see this coming. Will be interesting to see how it plays out in the series seeing as they changed the identity of Robb's wife.

Her own doom! I loved this plot and how it all kicked off. What a cliffhanger to end on!

I'm not sure. She's been pushing him away throughout the book so I think he's finally decided to stay away. Good on him.

I've given up speculating too much with this series, especially about minor characters. It's too unpredictable.

162) Freys going to side with Stannis? Could be an interesting developement.

Oh, those fickle Freys.

163) I have to say I hate how women are made to look so frail and stupid in this book. I want Dany! I'm even questioning Arya's intelligence since she took up with the creepy guy with a worm in his eye socket.

I liked that the majority of he characters in this book were women though. It's such a patriarchal society which is difficult to read about at times, but this is why I found Dorne so refreshing. More Dorne please.

164) I'm a little confused. Samwell ended up where he was supposed to go, but Gilly will stay with the Islanders?

If he's going to become a maester, he has to keep Gilly secret. There's also that little vow he swore for the Night's Watch.

165) Thoughts on the visit with the archmaester?

Too brief for me to have many.

166) They thought Stannis was to be King. Once they realize it's Dany who was to fulfill the prophecy, what will they do with Stannis?

I don't understand the question - who is 'they'? Stannis's followers? Maybe he'll lose some of his supporters but I'm fine with that, I don't really like Stannis and his whole weird religious thing. (hide spoiler)]

I'm looking forward to the next book. I was prepared for this one being less action and more plotting and planning, but I've heard it all gets exciting again about halfway through the next.

There are so many intrigues and plots going on, I think it would be hard to trust anyone! I don't think that Arianne loves Ser Arys- she is just using him because he is a tool to get to Marcella. I do feel bad for him because he seems like a genuinely good man.

I am glad to see that Cersei is cracking around the edges. I am going to be so happy to see her fall!
