Liz So I'm justcurious as to how fast people read. I see some people who only finish a book once every so often, others who will go through one or two books a week. Do you prefer to speed through a book, or take your time with it?

I tend to be a bit of a slow reader, but I prefer to savor what I read.

message 2: by Lu (new)

Lu | 37 comments I will never take more than a week to read any book.
Some books I'll read from cover to cover in one night;
a really good suspense is like going to the gym for a cardio workout.

message 3: by Manday (new)

Manday | 212 comments I don't know if you are asking how many pages we read per minute or how much time we devote to reading per week. I read pretty fast in terms of getting through pages when I am reading unless its a particularly compex text, but I don't dedicate as much time to reading as some people on here do, and it varies widely. I find I tend to go in spurts, I will read 3-4 books in a week, and then stall out for a week or two and barely read at all, and then go on another spurt.

message 4: by Allison (new)

Allison It really depends how good the book is. If it's fast-paced, or I'm really enjoying the story, I'll make time to read it. However, if it's just so-so or not holding my attention very well, it takes me a while to get through it.
That being said, I'm generally a fast reader, as far as getting through the pages.

Elizabeth of Silver's Reviews (silversreviews) If the book is really good, I can finish it in one day....for the most part I take at least a week.

message 6: by Liz (new)

Liz Manday, I mean more how much you find yourself devoting your time to it a week, but answer the question however you like (sorry, probably could've been more specific about that).

Does anyone find some genres read more quickly than others? I know I tend to read fantasy, chick lit or YA faster than I might others things.

Lu | 37 comments Jo wrote: "Do you read another book after you've just finished one or do you leave it a bit?
I would read more if it was my only hobby but i also like to draw and play guitar "

Hi Jo,
I am a fiber artist and totally addicted to quilting.
So, I do split my time between sewing and reading (and gardening a succulent backyard and creating in the kitchen--used to teach cooking).

Lu | 37 comments Jo wrote: "Do you find yourself spending more time reading than other things if the book is a good one? i do and if its not such a good one then ill play more guitar. It also depends on mood too"

Oh yes! I just finished The Help which was about a 3 day read--totally ejoyed it. For me it was very thought-provoking. My bookclub meets Tuesday to discuss the book and can't wait to hear everyone's opinion. Next up is The God of Animals but I can't start it too soon so I will do 'fillers' until the date of our next meeting approaches.

Definitely! It can get difficult to talk to me and I'll put off important things...last Friday I was packing my dorm room up and trying to get out of my room by 4:00 but I had 30 pages of a book left so I had to stop and finish. I had been annoyed because trying to pack and clean had kept me busy so I didn't have as much time to read.
I also know I tend to read pages slowly, which totally comes from being an English major and trying to absorb everything.

I live in S. Cal and have friends that belong to not only one, but two. So bookclubs are quite active down here and lots of fun. We get together to discuss and usually have a party (or appetizers) around the theme of the book. Some have been very creative.

I'm sure on Tuesday, since we just read The Help, the food will be based on southern cooking, i.e. Southern Iced Tea, biscuits, mud pie, etc.

Fiona,
This is true. Sometimes, I can't find the book in the library, so I have to buy it. If it isn't one I am feeling a connection with, I feel I am struggling to finish and could have spent my money on something different. However, we all don't ejoy the same type of read.

I definitely read chicklit faster and YA faster. I would love to join a "real life" book club. I never thought to look at the library for a list of local ones. I'll have to investigate, thanks!

Nicely stated.

message 19: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I can race through a book, or savor it slowly. It honestly doesn't have a lot to do with liking the book or not, but how much time I can devote or the mood I'm in. Embarassingly enough, I read the entire Twilight series in 6 days, but recently took 5 days to read a book I adored because I kept re-reading beautiful passages. It all depends. I CAN read fast, but don't always WANT to.

Oh yes. The Twilight series I read right on through.
Diana Gabaldon, The Highland series, I read really fast--loved them and didn't want it to end. I know she has another added to the series coming up in Sept. (I think) Sometimes I get into a book and look over at the clock--1 a.m., 2 a.m., etc. Which is really funny because if I'm not into a book, I nod out fairly early--10.

message 21: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) When I didn't work I read about a book a day, at least 6 a week. Now its probably 2 or 3 a week. Depends on the book though. Straw Dogs Thoughts on Humans and Other Animals by John Gray needs a background in world philosophy. I'm only barely literate in philosophy so I have to look up every reference. I read about three pages and then I have to digest it, understand it before I move on. This book is going to take me about four months to read.

message 22: by Debra (new)

Debra It really depends on my physical abilities more than anything. Fibro fog, fatigue, severe neck and shoulder pain, and migraines limit my reading more than anything. I could read a book a day if I didnt work or have physical limitations. There is nothing I like more than reading.

message 23: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Ellis | 176 comments Debra, I am sorry you are in pain and I pray that your conditions improve and you feel extremely clear headed again, back to that wonderful place you are made to be.
love
Sharon

Abigail (42stitches) | 360 comments I often read pretty quickly unless it is philosophy, religion, or other non-fiction (especially school related). Example: it took me almost exactly a year to read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. I would read a chapet or sometimes only a paragrapgh and have to think about it for a few days or a month.

Since I'm not working right now I read one or two books a day whenever I feel up to it. I haven't read that much since February though, I think. I always read at least one hour a day but as many 8 or more. I also craft (crochet lately) so when I'm not reading I'm tiring out my fingers.

GracieKat | 864 comments Manday wrote: "I am in two "real life" book clubs, though both are organized online. One reads whatever the host feels like, the other is "classics and cocktails" and meets at a local wine shop."

I was hoping to start one up around here but no one was interested. Which goes to show the amount of reading done in my general neighborhood. Ironically I tend to read more in the summer because we camp a lot and I'm an insomniac so I need something to read after everyone else is asleep and the lights are out. I also love to just veg out in the sun while my son swims so I like a good book. I can usually read a book in a day if it's captivating enough for me. I usually have a few books going at one time so if I don't feel like reading one I have others to choose from.

message 26: by Jar (new)

Jar (jarjy) | 46 comments I usually read really fast but I'm trying to slow down to enjoy the "excitement" of the story. Cause I know that even if I re-read the action and suspense won't be the same. It's hard to slow down though. Not very successful.

message 27: by Joanie (new)

Joanie | 714 comments For me it depends on the book as well as what else is going on at home. Some months I'm lucky to make it through 5 books but last month I read 12. Being pregnant and having a soon to be 3 year old often mean that I'm falling asleep at 8:30 with my book on my face. Now that it's finally getting nice out I can sit outside while my son plays and get in some extra reading and not feel neglectful.

I'm in2 face to face book clubs too and they're a lot of fun. One was formed here but we meet in person. The other one is with past and present friends from work and involves a lot of gabbing but not always so much about the book!

message 28: by Della (new)

Della It depends.
If I like the book, I can read it in one sitting. If its a very heavy book, I might read three chapters and set it aside for weeks without picking it up again. I read the last Harry Potter book in 48 hours tho.

message 29: by Atishay (new)

Atishay | 1451 comments It depends on the book for me too. The style of writing makes all the difference. Some authors really write with style and in those cases, I like to read slow, taking in everything they're trying to say. With the more conventional paperback thrillers/stories I'm faster.

message 30: by Savannah (new)

Savannah (scotten) I read like crazy especially if I like the book. A book will never take me more than a week. I read the whole Twilight series in 3 days. It really just depends.

message 31: by Taejas (new)

Taejas Kudva (kudvat) | 77 comments Reading speed for me is mostly a balancing act between interest and distraction. But I'm sure that's everybody, and the former mitigates the latter.

But the weirdest thing I've found is that books gather momentum. It may take me a week or two to get maybe a quarter of the way into the book. Then it picks up speed, a few days to read another third or so, and then it'll have me and I'll polish off the remainder in a few hours.

message 32: by Lora (new)

Lora (apostot) It depends on the book but in general I read fast, if I'm not distructed. I read the Lord of the Rings trilogy in a day (ok I didn't eat or sleep on that day, but still...)

message 33: by Monique (new)

Monique | 15 comments Depends on the book, and if I have time to read...mostly I'm a fast reader.

Lol, I slept but did not do anything else and finished in 2 days.

message 35: by Elena (new)

Elena | 45 comments Of course, it depends on the book for me as well. I have books at home, which I have begun months ago and I'm not yet half-way through them. Others I might read and finish in a night. Like Monique said, if I have some time to spare, and the book is worth it (involving story, fascinating writing, interesting characters), I'm a fast reader.

message 36: by Carol (new)

Carol (caroldias) It depends, obviously.
Not only if I like the book, but if I like the writing style and if it is personal. When I´m reading some relly "important", very personal, I read it in one night, like from 10pm to 6am lol

When it is something generic, but I really like probably a week.

When it´s something generic and I´m not very excited about it probably two weeks lol

Of course it depends on my schedule, since I work and go to college lol Exame weeks I don´t read at all! And when I´m too tired because of work I sleep in 2 minutes so there´s less time to read.... :(

message 37: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) I'm reading really slowly now. Can't seem to really get into the books I am reading, I am enjoying them, but they aren't gripping me.

message 38: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I've been in a reading slump since the beginning of June - I just don't want to read (I took two twelve hour train rides one weekend and read exactly three chapters of To Kill A Mockingbird). Before that I was reading 4 or 5 books a week, so that might have something to do with it.

message 39: by Liz (new)

Liz (arcanepenguin) | 285 comments It depends on the book, but my friends joke that if I don't read a book every day I turn into a pumpkin.

Since I got put on meds that cause insomnia I've been on 4-5 books a day (those 11pm-7am hours are a bitch).

message 40: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12 comments I read about 3 books a week, however, the problem with reading fast is that my retention isn't always that good! I just read The Help in about six hours, but I'm on vacation.

message 41: by Shona (last edited Jul 10, 2009 04:11AM) (new)

Shona (anovelobsession) Normally, I read about two or three books a month. Usually, family, work and school all keep me pretty busy. However, lately I have been flying through books. I'm not in school right now, and we are in the process of moving. So while watching the packers, etc, I have plenty of time on my hands and I have read quite a lot in the last couple of months. I do tend to read fast, but I've found that I don't really like going through book after book. I really like to savor a book and wait for a little while before starting another one. If it's a book that I really loved, it almost feels like cheating to pick up another one so soon!

message 42: by Abbie K. (new)

Abbie K. (brigidshawk) | 108 comments If it is a good book, I CANT put it down until I'm finished. I'm not a speed reader, but I do read quickly. I can read a book in an evening after work (unless I have to grade papers).

message 43: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (hnybee411) I can read an average size paperback in 3-4 hours. I read the whole Twilight series in one weekend. Drives my husband nuts as it will take him 4 times as long to read the same book.
Generally though I read anywhere between 1-3 books per week, more if I'm off work.

i got it at 3:00 pm and was finished 8:00 am the next morning :)

message 45: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) It depends on the book, really. If it's a really good book that's caught my attention, I'll have a difficult time putting it down until I've finished reading it. During the school year I usually finish a book per week but since I've had more time on my hands over the summer, I've been finishing books in 1 - 3 days depending *blushes*

message 46: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments For me it depends how thick the book is, whether or not I'm into it, etc. If I'm on a YA kick (which happens more and more often), I read about 4 or 5 in a week. If they're other genres, then about 3 or 4 in a week. But I have to be really into the books, if I'm not, I get stuck on the same book for like four days.

message 47: by Sami (new)

Sami (puppyplay617) | 5 comments It really depends on the book I'm reading but I really do like most books-- I know what I'm looking for when I pick them out. Anyway-- I tend to read very very fast if I get into the story-- sometimes it takes me a day to actually get myself into it. I mean if anyone knows the Twilight series--- I have read that series over and over and I read them so fast. For example-- I read New Moon in a day. Anyway--- Happy Reading!! ♥

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments I read a good bit, and at a good rate, but my mother makes me look like a piker in both categories. She gets through several hundred books a year, and is the fastest reader I've ever seen.
