Onga. I think this will be a singing-hosannah to Tolkien event!Well, aside from discussing how brilliant is the book, who are the current authors that he influenced, his writing style, his life and all the rest.
Ikaw yon!

After the cult success of the Lord of the Rings (to the point that it was originally pirated in the US), there was a gap in "adult fantasy" for a few decades before Del Rey decided to release two Lord of the Rings derivatives, namely The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks and Lord Foul's Bane by Stephen R. Donaldson (both are trilogies). The book also significantly influenced the tabletop RPG Dungeons & Dragons (in fact it had to rename Hobbits to Halflings, Ents to Treants, to avoid copyright infringement) which in turn influenced a lot of readers and gamers (including Japan which would draw a lot of influence from D&D-type fantasy).
Suffice to say, modern "high fantasy" or "epic fantasy" is patterned after Lord of the Rings, which explains the proliferation of derivative tropes like elves = archers/nature, or dwarves = greedy/smiths/mountain-folk. It is also the reason why a lot of fantasy books are "trilogies" (sometimes even if there are more than/less than three books in a series).
It wasn't until recent epic fantasy starting with Robert Jordan that that specific pattern started to be broken and we start to encounter different kinds of high fantasy, at least as far as popular works are concerned.
The noteworthy peers of Tolkien was C.S. Lewis. They were in fact good friends (both were from Oxford) but had opposite views on women. Tolkien for example nurtured female scholars while Lewis didn't even think they were worth educating until late in his life. (More thorough breakdown can be found at http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.as..., last footnote)
Charles, now I can't wait to meet you. Such a very informative impressive response. You seem to be a very knowledgeable young man. Ikaw na ang apo ni Tolkien!!! :)
@K.D. if it's from K.D's recom, it must be good (SEIKO FILMS) hahhaha!! Yup! Nasa part pa lang ako ng kina Esmeralda and Carlos story. It's nice to read na nasa familiar setting coz you dont need to imagine "the coldness of winter" thing na nababasa mo sa ibang libro. Hehehe.
@Heldervert: eyyy di ko pa nababasa yan. Really wanted to.
After the elephants and kikomachine komix, try ko isunod ang GOT. I even have the pc game. Hahahah!!!
Maldita, sus. Stalker! Joke :) Thanks for checking my read folder. I liked that book. I remember I enjoyed reading some parts of it. I still remember that the characters are hiding in the basement of a big house owned by a mayaman na ale. Tas wala na silang makain hak hak.
Hahahah!!! Yup. Hindi ko akalain na napaka-interesting ng "The Elephants.."I am really enjoying this book. =)
Na kay Isabelle na ako. Action movie naman ngayon. Kaloka tong librong toh. Parang karinderya, lahat ng ulam naka-offer hahaha
Ikaw na ang advance hak hak.Ako tatapusin ko muna ang "The Executioner's Song" tomorrow. Then review, then start right away ng Del Monte Kristo" hak hak
i'm currently reading fifty shades of grey and uhmm.. I don't know if i love this because I can't stop reading or I hate this because I keep ranting about the characters on twitter. 0_0

I saw an episode of Girls (HBO) where they use the term hate read. It's when you hate a book (or some aspects of it, at least) but couldn’t help reading it all the way through. :)

Well then this is the perfect example of that hate read thing. Lol i also have a copy of the two other books from the trilogy and i feel a little excited over it but at the same time i just want to delete it from my ibooks shelf :))
Adrianne, I saw that that "Shades of Gray" is now a trilogy and it has its own shelves sa FB The Block! Omaygad. Bestseller na and all but I have not read those yet. Nahuhuli na ako! Mahal kasi tsaka baka hype lang. Minsan nakaka-disappoint pag di maganda. :)

Really? I have foreigner GR male friends who rated this with 4 or 5 stars. I read the "Twilight" series at the height of its hype. I liked the whole series overall. :)

kasi in one post, ang mga guys puro negative ang mga pinopost... but then, baka nga magustuhan mo din... =)
KD: Shades of Grey is a porn fan-fiction of Twilight. They said that the writing style of Meyer was imitated, too. You liked Twilight because of father to daughter relationship. I hope that Shades of Grey has retained it for you to like it even though I currently doubt it.

Rollie: Erotica ng father-daughter OMG. Susmaryosep! Wag na! Waagg naaaah! ---> effect ng kakabasa ng Kikomachine hak hak. Kung maka-react.Angel: No thanks. I don't read pdf. Too strenuous to my aging eyes! I will ask our fellow members during the event on Saturday, sino may ginintuang puso na gustong magpahirap para ma-diss ko itong books na ito pag di maganda hak hak.
Kinikilatis mo na rin yung drawing like Ayban and others do. haha.
Rollie: Tomoh!
May alliance kami against the author hak hak
