There's another great memoir, Tears of the Desert by Halima Bashir. This one really had me crying buckets. Halima is the first woman doctor in Darfur. She sought asylum in the UK when she fled from Sudan but it was denied several times so she had to stay on. Won't reveal any more info but this is one GIRL POWER book!:D

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments When it comes to memoir, my favorite ever is ANGELA'S ASHES by Frank McCourt!

message 255: by Apokripos (new)

Apokripos (apokalypse) | 3321 comments I agree Kuya Doni! That's why I'm hoping that you will deftly lead our memoir book club discussion... ^_^

message 256: by Ariel (new)

Ariel Acupan | 390 comments Yeah, Kuya Doni's right, "Angela's Ashes" is also one of my favorite and my very first novel (I wonder where it is now ^_^). Is Diary of Anne Frank also a memoir? If it is then that would be next for me. Read it when I'm still on High School, great book.

message 257: by Apokripos (new)

Apokripos (apokalypse) | 3321 comments Ariel, Angela's Ashes is a memoir. Diary of Anne Frank might also be categorized as memoir though it is done in an epistolary style.

If I remember it quite well the edition I read then includes a map of the house where they had gone hiding...

And both are great books!

That's good for you Bluemoon! Can't wait to read your full review.

message 259: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments Bluemoon wrote: "hehehehe...I'm really not good with reviews. They're usually personal reviews. More emotional than actual dissecting the meaning of the book!"

You can just write what you feel about the book in your review. I like reviews like that.

message 260: by Aaron Vincent (new)

Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) | 2053 comments You don't have to confine yourself in the conventional pattern of writing reviews. Write what you feel. You don't have to use big words. You also don't have to write long reviews with several paragraphs. Don't try to make your review too intellectual, just express what you think about the book. Have fun writing it and it will be fun to read. :)

Apokripos (apokalypse) | 3321 comments Done reading The Kite Runner last Sunday. The book really wowed me. At times suspenseful and grim in its episode of the Afghan's struggle it still kept me turning pages. It has a well-rounded climax and ending with an uplifting and optimistic tone.

I think it's cliche to say that it is a certified
modern-classic. ☺☺☺

And I think I'll be off to my friendly pirated DVD provider to buy myself a copy of the movie adaptation of this book. Hope I'll like the movie, too. ☻☻☻

message 263: by Apokripos (new)

Apokripos (apokalypse) | 3321 comments As if The Kite Runner isn't depressing enough, I'll be reading the ultra-bleak and utterly gloomy The Road next, as soon as I'm done with my review of my previous book.

Yeah, the same goes for me. I write reviews so there is something to remind me of what I felt after reading the book.

I tried reading 'Tis right after Angela's Ashes but I got bored. I will read it someday though. I also have his Teacher Man. I also have Malachy McCourt's (his younger brother) A Monk Swimming. That should tell you how much I like Angela's. Ha-ha-ha!

I read Angelas Ashes, Tis and Teacher Man. I must agree Tis was quite boring but since I loved Angelas Ashes and Teacher Man (I read them before Tis), I struggled to finish the second book.

I read Angela and Baby Jesus (also by Frank McCourt) while I browsing at Fully Booked The Fort. I saw an open copy. Natapos ko sa mismong bookstore.

Hey James, I was contemplating on reading the trilogy of Christopher Moore (Bloodsucking fiend, You Suck, and the latest Bite Me). Was he really that funny? Others said that I should start with A Dirty Job, to be familiar with his style. How's Lamb?

Still, Catching Fire is part of the series that you called as a very very good series., :P

i love the road. desolate, sad, hopeful, and love are the feelings or emotions that came out when i read the book. the movie is really good as well. if you like the road but wants something with muscle try reading ice by anna kavan. she is stoned a heroine addict. her genre is called slipstream. some of murakami's work is considered slipstream. i guess, that makes the road (i think) part of the slipstream genre.

shine!

Book 1 - four star (I really like it)
Book 2 - two star (It's okay)

After reading Book 1, I had a high expectation on Book 2 but I got disappointed (that explains the rating). However, the plot itself (set by Book 1) is novel and it is definitely a hard to put down book. Even if I got disappointed with Book 2 and I am still looking forward to Book 3. I will definitely be one of those who will queue during its release. I am also lending the books left and right in the office trying to have my reading friends share the excitement I had reading Book 1 and I hope that they will also like Book 2 (like you and others). I am not bluffing, AV. I really like the series. It is possible to like something in its totality but hate some of its parts. Hope I am clear now.

The thing is your rated Twilight and Eclipse 2 stars and Breaking Dawn with 3 stars. And Catching Fire is way better than any of those., :)
