message 1051: by Lyle Kimo (new)

Lyle Kimo Valdez (eskablong) | 131 comments Hehe. I'm trying read books outside of my comfort zone. Not counting the books by RL Stine and Enid Blyton, I started reading thriller, espionage/military science, and mystery books, then moved on to fantasy/sci-fi, then YA books.

Ano pala mga magandang books from Filipino authors?

message 1052: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments O sige, I will try reading it again. Bago dumating the Jodi Piccoult month next year. May collection sya. Sabi ko, try ko. Yong pinakamaganda na tinggin mo magugustuhan ko. So she gave me My Sister's Keeper. Hay, pinilit ko talagang basahin just to make her happy. Sobrang drama, Joyzi. I know this is wrong but you know, I always believe that just like most products in the market, they have niches. Minsan, may clear gender ang ibang books. For example, James Patterson is for young to middle-aged men (I think) who loves thrillers and crime stories.

message 1053: by Joyzi (new)

Joyzi (joit) | 1768 comments Oo nga baka ganun kasi girls naman commonly ang into drama e tapos guys are into action/horror

message 1054: by Joyzi (new)

message 1055: by K.D. (new)

K.D. My brother told me yesterday that Time Magazine came out just this week a list of Top 50 Women Authors (around the world), two Filipinas landed there and one of them is Hagedorn (I forgot the other one). So, just this lunchtime, I bought her Dogeaters. Pero it is in English and I think Hagedorn is already a Fil-Am.

I hope will be a full-fledged Pinay writer someday.

message 1056: by Joyzi (new)

Si Tina pala e writer as in novelist?

message 1057: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments Lam mo Joyzi, may bagong book si Bob Ong. I forgot the name. Many christmases ago, an officemate gave me NKKBSNPLAKO? I read it while I was in the toilet. Tapos one time sa Book Fair (MOA), nakita ko table nya, tapos parang nakalagay doon "Please line up here for signature signing. However, Bob Ong is just on break". So, medyo naghihintay ako. So, go na ako.

message 1058: by Joyzi (new)

Joyzi (joit) | 1768 comments Oo I know about it kasi si Bob Ong parang kinwento niya na di nga siya nagpupunta in autograph signing ever sa Stainless Longganisa ata.

He actually join Who Wants to be a Millionaire but he uses his real name so no one really knows that Bob Ong was able to join in that show up until he wrote the experience in one of his books.

Pero I love Bob Ong parang parehas kami mag-isip haha, pero maganda books niya puro kalokohan pero may laman.

message 1059: by Joyzi (new)

Joyzi (joit) | 1768 comments Ah she's like a freelance writer ganun??? grabe di ko pa rin alam kung makakapunta ko but my other problem aside my magulong schedule is that I really can't travel to Manila alone grabe bobo ako mag-commute baka mawala ako

message 1060: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments Oo. "Me too" react ko.

message 1061: by Joyzi (new)

Joyzi (joit) | 1768 comments Aaaaay I haven't read yung My Imaginary Ex

message 1062: by Joyzi (new)

Joyzi (joit) | 1768 comments No I haven't read that too, ano ba yang mga books na yan never heard, alien ba 'ko?

message 1065: by K.D. (new)

message 1066: by Joyzi (new)

message 1067: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Imagine out of 300 read books, twice pa lang. And yet she is my friend not only in GR but most especially in real life ha ha! Pero sa yo, natutuwa sya ha ha!

message 1068: by Joyzi (new)

Joyzi (joit) | 1768 comments Sino yun, si Julie ba yun?

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments Dapat binaliktad mo ang tshirt mo, Joyzi.

message 1072: by Joyzi (new)

message 1074: by Joyzi (new)

message 1076: by K.D. (new)

message 1077: by Joyzi (new)

Joyzi (joit) | 1768 comments member kasi ako ng school publication, pero magaling ako pag sa writing but if I'm going to speak English naku no comment na lang

message 1078: by Lyle Kimo (new)

Mukhang maganda cover eh, pero ngdadalawang-isip pa akong bilhin.

message 1079: by Joyzi (new)

Joyzi (joit) | 1768 comments I haven't read Ilustrado yet but I heard that the book uses Big words that you need a dictionary as a companion to read it and that kinda turn me off.

message 1080: by Carr (new)

message 1081: by Joyzi (new)

Joyzi (joit) | 1768 comments Nabasa mo na?

message 1082: by kwesi 章英狮 (last edited Dec 02, 2010 02:27AM) (new)

kwesi 章英狮 (kwesifriends) | 2752 comments I have the book (Ilustrado), but I haven't read it yet and I'm waiting for Flippers discussion next year before I start reading it, some says it was good and some says it was like Noli and Fili and some says it has a bunch of flowery words.

Wow, I've read all of your conversation and I was amaze that limited are reading books that are outside there comfort zone. (Including me, since I want to explore more books.) From reading the above conversation, it gives me an idea that only few will read the books of Jodi next year. Aw.

message 1083: by Lyle Kimo (new)

message 1084: by Joyzi (new)

Joyzi (joit) | 1768 comments yeah Kwesi only girls will read it joke

message 1085: by Joyzi (new)

Joyzi (joit) | 1768 comments But I think Lyle The Ilustrado won an award, it might really be great

message 1087: by kwesi 章英狮 (last edited Dec 02, 2010 02:49AM) (new)

kwesi 章英狮 (kwesifriends) | 2752 comments Aw, disappointing. But never mind in the positive side there are still readers here interested in reading her books and for those people that I expected to read her books that I thought they were reading books outside there comfort zone, maybe they'll give her another chance.

The book won the Man Asian Literary Prize in 2008.

message 1088: by Joyzi (new)

Joyzi (joit) | 1768 comments What Jodi Picoult books have you read na ba?

message 1089: by kwesi 章英狮 (last edited Dec 02, 2010 03:20AM) (new)

kwesi 章英狮 (kwesifriends) | 2752 comments Once, Handle With Care.

message 1090: by Joyzi (new)

Joyzi (joit) | 1768 comments ganun ba parang I never heard yung book na yun, ang popular na books niya e My Sister's Keeper na naging movie pa and then there's Nineteen Minutes and The Pact

message 1091: by kwesi 章英狮 (new)

kwesi 章英狮 (kwesifriends) | 2752 comments I see, ok lang yun and some Jodi Picoult readers recommends The Pact, so maybe I'll include that book in the list next year.

message 1092: by Joyzi (new)

Joyzi (joit) | 1768 comments yeah but I haven't read that yet so I really don't know but I really like My Sister's Keeper and Nineteen minutes they're so good

message 1093: by kwesi 章英狮 (last edited Dec 02, 2010 03:30AM) (new)

kwesi 章英狮 (kwesifriends) | 2752 comments Don't worry, same here wish I can read all of her books next year.

I think one thing that makes Jodi's book interesting to me is that, she wrote books with characters that are emotionally depressed and characters that are excluded or not accepted by the society because of there current situation, like House Rules, in which the child have a mental problem and accused of killing his tutor.

message 1094: by Tintin (last edited Dec 02, 2010 04:21AM) (new)

Tintin (marimorimo) | 111 comments Speaking of Ilustrado: A Novel, bumili ako ng copy nyan a few months ago, pero hanggang ngayon di pa nababasa XD Nakaka-curious ano?

But based from the reviews, I don't think you'll like it, Joyzi. I'm not sure I'll like it either, that's why it's still in the pile. It's under my 'challenging and maybe weird read' category.

message 1095: by Carr (new)

Carr (capocapo) | 284 comments My professor was one of the judges when Ilustrado won the Palanca for Best Novel. She said she initially thought twice about voting for it because she found it too different, but in the end, she cast her vote for Ilustrado because a novel like that has the potential to change the course of Philippine literature. Galing lang. Hihihi

message 1098: by Monique (new)

Monique (attymonique) | 2130 comments I've already read Ilustrado. Not my cup of tea.

message 1099: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments I have a copy of the book. I heard mixed comments from friends so I am still encouraging myself to read it. It's in front of my bookshelves and I see it everyday.

message 1100: by Sheryl (new)

Sheryl | 238 comments I've read "Ilustrado" since it was our book club's monthly read a few months back. Hmmm, my thoughts on the book... At first, the hard words were a challenge but as I surpassed that I was able to appreciate the book bit by bit. It was told with flashbacks, excerpts from short stories, different povs and such which was intricately pieced together. It truly is not everyone's cup of tea pero galing naman ng pagkakasulat. It's something a Pinoy can be proud of. :)
