David Harris | 10 comments Some of the books I'm looking forward to in the rest of the year are: Crooked, by Austin Grossman, A Cold Silence by Alison Littlewood (the followup to her A Cold Season - hoping for more wintry horror), The Black Country by Kerry Hedley-Price ("Maddie and Harry: she's an estate agent, he's a teacher. They'll say they live in the Black Country. They'll say how they met Jonathan Cotard, explain how they later argued, had a car accident, thought they'd killed someone..."), Dead Funny: Encore (a collection of horror stories by comedians - following up Dead Funny last year), Planetfall by Emma Newman ("Renata Ghali believed in Lee Suh-Mi’s vision of a world far beyond Earth, calling to humanity. A planet promising to reveal the truth about our place in the cosmos, untainted by overpopulation, pollution, and war...") and Europe at Midnight by Dave Hutchinson. Also new Ian Rankin and Jonathan Coe.

I was fascinated by your choices, and I'd listen to that 1936 version anytime...

Ruthiella | 272 comments Unless the book is from an author/series I really love (say the final book in the Hillary Mantel Cromwell series or the latest Flavia novel from Alan Bradley, etc.), I don’t pay too much attention to the coming attractions. But I do like listening to Simon and Gavin discuss what they are looking forward to and I enjoyed reading David’s list above (the Black Country sounds particularly intriguing).

I would love to listen to a mock version of the readers circa 1936 with Thomas and Gavin and the books they would most look forward to. I checked out the goodreads list of most popular books printed in 1936 and already I see “Miss Buncle Married” (Thomas’ pick for sure) and “Murder in Mesopotamia” (maybe Gav?).
