It's not the accidental time machine by haldeman. It's not part of a series, from what I recall.
Wait, I think it's Conrad's Time Machine by Leo Frankowski.

Yes. It could be moved to Solved.I don't know of any other time-machine story where someone in the machine got shredded, but the time-machine plans were fed thru the time-machine in the same event.
It starts out with two friends on a hike or something near their university and they come across this sphere. Every few minutes there's a pop and shreds of paper fly around. The book follows one of the friends... Spoilers follow.
They figure out that the pops happen at an exponentially decreasing interval and the sphere shrinks. They calculate when to come back, wait a bit, and the last few layers disappear in a rip, and there are chunks of meat and paper everywhere. Because of something they figured out because of it, they discover time travel. They build this city, get rich, one guy ages a lot more than the other because he keep jumping around in time, the narrator seems lost, they get rich, and finally it all unravels. Their secretary, in love with one of the pair, commits suicide by sending herself back and is the source of the meat they found at the beginning of the book.
