I offer affordable Editing Services, and the site also talks about my novels - including the two Berkley Publishing (PenguinUSA) is putting out in early 2012.

Renee (rjmiller) Good morning all. I just posted a review of Rosemarie Boll's book The Second Trial by Rosemarie Boll on my examiner page. http://www.examiner.com/books-in-cana... Rosemarie also did an interview and it's worth checking out while you're there. Excellent book.

Erma Odrach | 163 comments Mod
Enjoyed both review and interview. Thanks for keeping us informed on all the great authors out there, Renee!

message 160: by Renee (new)

Renee (rjmiller) You're welcome. I feel lucky that I get to read so many great ones thanks to these pages. What I was really impressed with in The Second Trial was that Rosemarie wrote to the reader rather than 'at' them. I'd let my daughter (the 12 year old) read this for sure. Actually, I gave it to her a few days ago and she asked what it was about. I told her and she's all like "A serious book? Come on." But I noticed her curled up with it today for a while. So, perhpas serious isn't so bad.

message 161: by Erma (new)

Erma Odrach | 163 comments Mod
I suppose it's not only a serious book but one of awareness. It's important to know and see the signs, even for 12-year-olds. I'm sure she'll have a lot to say when she's done.

message 162: by Renee (last edited Nov 14, 2010 02:06PM) (new)

Renee (rjmiller) Yes, I think you've hit it exactly. The 'message' is one of awareness and that's what is really important. No one can do anything if they don't realize there's a problem. I think this gives a chance for younger readers to see the 'other side' to understand that bullies are made, not born. That's the biggest impression I get from this story. Our choices affect what we become. I suppose that makes more sense once you've read the book.

Thanks for all the info. Read some of your reviews on Amazon. Your book sounds really intriguing, bringing to life 17th century London and poet John Donne.

message 169: by Mary (new)

Mary (marynovik) | 3 comments I mentioned above that my historical novel Conceit was chosen for an August group read in the Book Haven group. I'm hoping that some of you might join in the discussion. The new link is: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/5...

Also, I wanted to mention that I'm running a contest in which I'm giving away a signed first edition of Conceit. To enter, all you have to do is to post a message in the thread telling everybody (1) the title of your favourite historical novel, (2) the name of the author, (3) what you like about the book in 2-3 sentences. Any kind of historical novel is ok, even books that are not traditional historicals.

Cheers,
Mary

Renee (rjmiller) For more than a year I've been plugging away at a project with another author, who always seems to convince me to come along on these crazy adventures, and we're nearing the finish line. On my blog I've explained it all. Curious? Check it out: http://www.reneeamiller.blogspot.com

Just checked out your blog. What a fascinating endeavor and such a great resource for writers. Can't wait to see the book when it comes out this September.

Renee (rjmiller) Thanks, Erma. I'm kind of terrified and excited all at once. :)

Which publisher did you go with or is it all inhouse? Am looking forward to reading it.

message 174: by Renee (new)

Renee (rjmiller) We looked around, but the general consensus was that traditional publishers feel the market is saturated for writing "how to" books, so the interest wasn't there. If our last name was King or Rowling, I'm sure we'd have found one easily, but alas, it is not. We're two nobodies from Goodreads. ;) After determinining that it is quite a busy little niche market in nonfiction, we found ourselves an editor and we're publishing it ourselves.

I'm glad we were able to use an editor. What a huge difference she's made on the book overall. Amazing.

Wow! Impressive. Quite the undertaking!

message 176: by Renee (new)

Renee (rjmiller) Yeah, I have a new respect for anyone who does this by themselves and comes out with a polished product. It is a ton of work.

message 177: by Erma (new)

Erma Odrach | 163 comments Mod
I did it once a number of years ago and I totally understand. You have to think of everything - the cover, the paper stock, design, artwork, edit, layout ... and then there's still the content to consider! Am excited to see the finished product!

message 178: by Renee (new)

Renee (rjmiller) So am I actually. And you know, if I hadn't had someone as detail-oriented as Carlos working with me, I don't think I'd have attempted self publishing at all. As you said, the writer has to think of everything and it's hard enough just worrying about the contents. With two brains working together, we pulled it off. (I think) By myself? I can't even imagine. It makes my brain hurt.

message 179: by Erma (new)

Erma Odrach | 163 comments Mod
It makes my brain hurt too to think of having to do it alone. After reading Menage-a-20 I do agree that Carlos is detail-oriented.

message 180: by Renee (new)

Renee (rjmiller) Yes, he likes details. Me? Not so much. I'm sure I caused him to develop some nervous disorder, like a tick or perhaps a more serious ailment, like an aneurism throughout this whole experience. I wouldn't be suprised to see a dart board on his wall with my mug on it.

Of course, I did curse him a time or twenty too. Imagine how lovely I was to get along with while trudging through grammar and punctuation. ;)

Renee (rjmiller) I've broke down and made a facebook page for my upcoming book "The Writer's Companion", which I co-wrote with Carlos J. Cortes. It will be available around the end of September. I've read more this weekend. The Writer's Companion is a must read for every writer. A great reference!

message 186: by Renee (new)

Renee (rjmiller) Thanks, Erma. We worked a long time on it. It's weird to be announcing it's release.

It's definitely not a "read in one sitting" kind of book, but our goal was to cover every step of the writing process from idea to publication, but in a way that makes it enjoyable. (if that makes sense) I think my favorite part to write was the vocabulary/usage doubts and the nuts and bolts section. I'm weird.

message 187: by Erma (new)

Erma Odrach | 163 comments Mod
Writer's Companion seems to have all the answers a writer might ask from character development, to plot, to comma usage, and a lot more. It's all there. You and Carlos did a great job and I'm definitely going to keep my copy close at hand.

I don't understand RSS. What is it? When I tried to add it to my new Wordpress website, it wanted an URL. I didn't know which URL they wanted.

I'd so appreciate having this explained - as well as some feedback on the website itself.

Love you all!

RSS is the Rich Site Summary, and it's basically the web feed for your blog. I'm not sure how Wordpress works, but you should have a feed/subscribe link listed somewhere.
