I like your response to the book and how it evokes nostalgic childhood memories. My childhood in the South was not quite like this, but it is representative of the time period. If find that I get the best responses from my comments when I pose a question that can have multiple possible answers. Readers just seem unable to resist making that kind of response.

I use to teach TKAM in high school English classes. I once had a student from Honduras whose main language was Spanish. I acquired a copy of the book in her native language so that she could keep up with the class. Of course, she had to take her tests in English. (I would use my Spanish to help translate some for her.) She scored higher than a lot of the English-speaking students on the the TKAM tests! Please continue discussing books with us! I find that my Spanish gets better the more I practice it. Even though immersion is the best way to learn a language, participating in book discussions is a step toward that.
