Why You Should Read Go Set a Watchman
BY BARBARA HOFFERT ON JULY 20, 2015 1 COMMENT
Harper Lee’s Go Set a Watchman brings down an American icon, and some people aren’t taking that very well, though apparently I’m not alone in believing that Atticus Finch needed scallyanother good, hard look. (Here’s my full review.) Others have grumbled that the writing is not altogether prize-worthy, but what were they expecting? Kickback against the publication of Go Set a Watchman was probably inevitable, but can we drop the Mockingbird worship and recognize this new work for what it is: the unretouched manuscript of a first novel, with inevitable problems but also valuable insight into the segregated South a half-century ago and America as a whole today. One need only hear words like Ferguson and Charleston and Voting Rights Act to remember that far from being a postracial society, we’ve barely begun the conversation, and Go Set a Watchman could be a good place to start.
