Art vs. Pragmatism?

I haven't read this yet, but I'm intrigued. This book addresses some of the central questions in my life. I earned my creative writing MFA from the New School in 2003.I've since shifted my focus from prose to dramatic writing. I've had moderate success with two plays (production and praise, but no money); no success with a handful of screenplays.
I'm lucky in that my day job involves writing for a high-level executive(everything from 2-pargraph emails to 60-page booklets).
My concern is that every question seems to be couched as an either/or proposition. Even the title feels belligerent. Why the antagonism?
