Regarding your issue: I usually just finish the book I'm currently reading and then start readalong read. I do like to participate in readalongs, even if it's not a book I would like to read the most, because I really enjoy reading other people's responses. Well, sometimes I read multiple books at the same time, but don't like that so much.
If you have giant list of to-read books and it bothers you, what about just deleting it? It would take the pressure off your chest I imagine. Or maybe select 10 books from it and delete the others, or if that's too bold, maybe make short-term tbr. Take 10 books and after you finished them take another 10, and ignore all the others. Maybe that would work?

solution: read more often and more quickly?"
Whoa, I thought I had a lot of books on TBR with my 554 books. :D Your solution would do me well. :)

I try to read only books I have for readathons but I add to it so quickly it's pointless to try to zero it out.

You can sign up for Book Bub emails and a few a day are free.
Usually indie authors and you risk reading crap or horrible edits...but I've found a few favorites.

Audiobooks are also a good solution(you can listen to them at double speed to get through them quickly! xD Yes I have done that before, and, will do so again!)
I add loads of books because everything just sounds so interesting! ^^
