crazyGeek (evilgeek) | 7 comments I know I am a bit late to start recording the books I read so far but I am a slow reader with exams on my head, I tend to read at slow pace to get involved in the story rather than skipping.

So, here I will be recording the books I finish or will finish in near future.

genre: memoirs.
Rating - 4 stars

I enjoyed this book. It was a compelling book well written by a 96 years old man recollecting the memories during the time of world war 1. I really liked so many of the characters, including his family members and neighbors and even felt sympathy for the grumpy old rabbi. I think the title is a little deceptive as the book focused more on the author's childhood and upbringing than on the love story of his sister and her Christian boyfriend.

Quote from the Christian boy who falls in love with Harry's (Jewish) sister:

“We're not very different from one another, not different at all, in fact. We're all just people with the same needs, the same desires, the same feelings. It's a lie about us being different...But it'll all change, 'arry. Believe me, it will. People get smarter. The human brain has a potential for development. Someday it will grow big enough so that everybody will see and understand the truth, and then we won't act like a bunch of sheep, and then that wall that separates the two sides of our street will crumble.”

The memoir also gives insight to his mother's struggles to keep the family together, his absent father's alcoholism, and the elusive hope of a life in America that everyone clings to.
