Go to the 'How Nominations Work' folder to find out more. This thread will be open for nominations until midnight EST, so you have one week.

You can nominate one book and second one book.

I look forward to all your nominations! :)

Remember we are not nominating books from countries we have previously read.

So we will have read by april:

The Slynx- Russian
Snow Country- Japanese
Hunger - Norwegian
The Colonel - Iranian
Half of a Yellow Sun - Nigerian.

So please don't nominate books from any of those countries as they will not be counted.

Thanks :)

So I'm gonna kick this off with a nomination for On Such a Full Sea by Chang-rae Lee. The author is a first generation Korean American so I thought that would be a cool perspective

On Such a Full Sea by Chang-rae Lee

It's a new release but I've looked and it appears to be available to buy everywhere now.

I thought it would be exciting to check out a new release together and it just sounds like an excellent concept - so yeah, I hope you all like the sound of it too.

P.S. It is a dystopian, and I know there are so many rubbish dytopians out there now but this one sounds like it could be amazing!

Lauren (glowingreviews90) | 19 comments I'd like to nominate When I Was Puerto Rican by Esmeralda Santiago. It's a memoir of the author growing up in PR and her eventual move to the US in the 60's and kind of the big culture shock. It's a popular memoir and is actually one of the books that will be given away during world book night. (She actually has three memoirs the first one talks more about growing up in PR and the second one is about her move to New York, but both sound good, and I am only nominating the first lol)

Kirat Pawar (theobsessivecompulsivereader) | 4 comments I would like to nominate my all time favourite book the god of small things by arundhati roy. I am constantly gusging about this book and take the chance to blab on about it whenever possible. I just luve the writing style, narrative and the themes presented.
Btw. Its set in India.

Sabrina | 1 comments I second Kirat's nomination of
The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy as it is also my favorite book.

Crossing my fingers that the link works and doesn't show up as a bunch of html mumbo jumbo!

message 14: by Joanne-in-Canada (last edited Feb 01, 2014 11:44AM) (new)

Joanne-in-Canada (inkling_jo) I second When I Was Puerto Rican. Being Canadian, I have never understood Puerto Rico's relationship with the U.S., so would find this informative.

message 15: by Cher 'N Books (new)

Cher 'N Books (cher_n_books) It looks like The House of the Spirits is the 3rd in a series? If so, I suffer from a reading quirk that prevents me from reading a series out of order. Myself and others that suffer from the same quirk may have a difficult knocking out the first 2 before starting that one. Does GR have it classified incorrectly as part of a series?

message 16: by Cher 'N Books (new)

Cher 'N Books (cher_n_books) I'd like to nominate Sky Burial: An Epic Love Story of Tibet for a Chinese cultural selection. It is a memoir with catchy synopsis promises: The book is an extraordinary portrait of a woman and a land, each at the mercy of fate and politics. It is an unforgettable, ultimately uplifting tale of love loss, loyalty, and survival.

message 17: by Derek (new)

Derek McDow (mcdowdy) | 20 comments Cher, it's a Goodreads gaff. House of Spirits was Allende's first published novel.

message 18: by Cher 'N Books (new)

Cher 'N Books (cher_n_books) Derek wrote: "Cher, it's a Goodreads gaff. House of Spirits was Allende's first published novel."

Ok, good deal then. I was hoping it was something like that!
