For the books that you have already read, you will have to set the read date to Jan 1, 1994 or later to get the widget to accept it. Also put them on the challenge shelf you create!
I don't think so. The only other type I know of is the goodreads annual challenge. I just posted another thread where you can suggest authors for additional challenges though.
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
I've read 9 of her novels so far. Just one more to go (well maybe 8 as I read Tar Baby in school and didn't really get it)
One of my fav authors - I have read all except for Paradise.Paradise has been sitting my shelf - unread. Not sure what I am waiting on. :)

Do you read them in order?

Yes, I am very left brained - so yes I usually read in order. But sometimes I "discover" an author that has already published several books and really enjoy their writing style and will go back and read in order. I like to see how an author's writing "grows" over time.
I've credited Morrison as my favorite author for years but never realised I've only read 3 of her books all the way through. (I've tried paradise and Tar Baby and they both flew so far over my head)! I'm definitely down for this challenge. I rarely read ALL of any authors books because I usually get disappointed. But GR always has me breaking my own rules or pushing myself! I would also like to challenge myself to read all of Bernice McFadden's work. So far I've read 3 of her books.
kisha wrote: "I've credited Morrison as my favorite author for years but never realised I've only read 3 of her books all the way through. At least that is my story.
And yes, there are times that I do not like all of the books of my fav authors. As my friend also says - Every book is not for everybody but every book is for someone.
I am also quick to stop reading a book if I am not enjoying. Sometimes it is the mood I am in and will back back up later (if a fav author).
Yes I am definitely a mood reader. I don't like to force a book If I'm struggling to get into it. That's how a 4star book earns 1star from me all because I wasn't in the mood for that type of read at that time. Now I've learn to put it down and revisit later. Toni Morrison definitely falls in that category for me. You can't force it. You have to be ready and willing. She's one of the greatest.
I am going to enjoy this! I now know I am truly a mood reader...for instance...am I feeling like what I call a "deep" read (which means I'll read much slower)...am I feeling an "entertaining" read (which usually means I'll read much faster), etc.... I have learned to "respect the book" and what it has to offer. I've always believed that EVERY book has a reader or audience but NOT EVERY reader is the perfect audience for EVERY book. I try my best not to abandon a book...maybe put it down and come back to it later, that's is if it's a book I think I really do want to read and realize my mood just isn't right for it at the time. I try giving it a chance later when I have time give it the time and attention it deserves from me as a reader to connect and appreciate the author's contribution, whether or not it proves to be a favorite. I even have a special GR shelf for them! Lol! T. Morrison and other well respected authors fall into this category for me at times. I have to be "ready" for the "experience" and very willing to be the type of reader/audience member the book demands and deserves. :)

I'm kinda like Londa on this one...a series, yes, for sure...in order is always my preference. Otherwise, I go by what interests me more at the time.
All you Morrison fans, this is a MUST SEE video. I was looking around on her website and found this. She did an interview with Junot Díaz in Dec 2013. It is @1.5 hours long and it is EXCELLENT! I didn't intend to watch the entire thing, but found myself up very late last night doing just that.
Here it is! Enjoy!

I am in the same boat as Kisha - I say Morrison is one of my favorites but I've only read three of her novels and none recently. I was already planning to read Beloved soon and it seems like a good starting spot for this challenge.
Courtney, Beloved is a wonderful book. My favourite by her. let me know how you like it if you do decide to read it.
Beloved was such a powerful read for me that I can't bring myself to read it again. If affects me on a deep level. I have the same thing going on with The Bluest Eye. I love it but I hate what it does to me. LOL
I agree Londa. Those are my favorites by her and Beloved is still the most powerful book I've read. Life changing. I've read it three times and there will definitely be a fourth lol. The book hit me spiritually.
This is the short blurb on Toni Morrison on the Nobel Prize for Literature site (there is much more info) but I thought this articulates her writing and why it is so powerful and meaningful - not just with one book but time again with her body of work. The Nobel Prize in Literature 1993
Toni Morrison
"who in novels characterized by visionary force and poetic import, gives life to an essential aspect of American reality"
I think about The Bluest Eye at least once a week! That book has profoundly affected me as a woman, mother and a writer. If I ever write anything that even approaches that book, I'll be happy!
Thanks for your input Angela! Toni Morrison, as popular as she is, she's still underrated in my opinion. You all are making me want to read the bluest eye again!
For everyone trying to add another Toni Morrison book to their list... We are reading A Mercy in June as a Group Read! Get your copies ready.
To those who have already read it, please pop in and discuss with us. Toni's books lead themselves to lots of discussion. LOL
Can't wait!
Thanks for posting Courtney!Wow! Great to know. I hope when I am 83, that I will be lucid enough to speak in complete sentences, let alone write novels. She is amazing!
Now I will have to step it up to complete this challenge.
Here is the goodreads link if anyone else wants to put it on their to-read list.
God Help the Child: A novel

Wow, that's an interesting looking book. o.O
I read The Bluest Eye and Song of Solomon. I'm a little embarrassed to say that I don't love her work. I don't know, I guess 2 is a small sampling. I do plan to give God Help the Child a go.

You do not have to "like" every author - there are several that I just cannot get into their work but that does not mean that I do not respect them.
I usually try to give an author 3 tries before I stop reading their books.
Too many books and just not enough time.
I haven't gotten around to reading Morrison's new book yet, but I'm sure I'm going to enjoy it. Here is a link to an interview about the newest novel God Help the Child.

I will be interested in your thoughts once you read the book.
I thought it was one of her most straight forward books and there was several things she wanted to get off of her chest.
I am just glad that even in her 80s that Ms. Toni can write a book and make us stand up and take notice.

Just finished reading it, I think you'll really enjoy it.
Re: the article. I tried to think of a single white man whose been convicted for raping a black woman. I could not think of anyone.
