Miss M | 68 comments Great list, Nigeyb, haven't thought of Julian Cope in a long time...reminds me of being glued to MTV's 120 Minutes back when it was all new...

Getting ready to start Memorial Day weekend here in the U.S.

Heaven - Eurogliders
Happy Hour - Housemartins
Oblivion - Aztec Camera
All that you dream - Linda Ronstadt
It's a beautiful day - The Beach Boys

That last one has an odd connection to your list, for me...clunker movie no one ever saw except I think my brother and me, but the soundtrack to Americathon is the first time I ever heard/heard of Elvis Costello. ;p

I absolutely love Gene Clark and all things Byrd related.

"The Fantastic Expidition of Dillard & Clark" is not only one of the greatest country-rock (cosmic american music) albums ever made, but one of the greatest albums of any kind ever made.

The brand new Chuck E Weiss album's just come out, and I'm absolutely confident in predicting this'll go down on my list as the best album of 2014...

^ Sounds like a heavy Tom Waits influence there for Mr Weiss. Promising though.

This is the Gene Clark film I watched a couple of weeks back...

The Byrd Who Flew Alone: The Triumphs and Tragedy of Gene Clark

Really wonderful - essential viewing I would say.

I also love "The Fantastic Expidition of Dillard & Clark".

I'd also say that "No Other" is completely brilliant too - and my personal favourite of everything he did (excepting perhaps some of the Byrds songs).

Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments Nigeyb wrote: "^ Sounds like a heavy Tom Waits influence there for Mr Weiss."

Or vice-versa, actually... they both came up together in Los Angeles in the early 1970s, alongside Rickie Lee Jones [who wrote 'Chuck E's In Love' about Chuck E Weiss]. Waits and Weiss have a very long history of influencing each other, as well as writing for each other. Waits, in fact, acted as producer on the new Weiss album.

T.A. Epley | 15 comments ^ Hey mark. Unfortunately a similar dynamic exists between Bowie and Peter Hamill (a recent discovery of mine) in that they developed their style along a parallel track, but one gained a prominence long before the other so that many hearing them for the first time assume the more obscure of the two figures to be a disciple of the artist with greater renown. Its a curious phenomenon.

T.A. Epley | 15 comments Changing subjects:

Here in the states FAIRPORT CONVENTION is quite the acquired taste, and it's one I've attempted to acquire numerous times. I'll be making my most recent attempt by listening to "Meet On The Ledge: The Classic Years" two disc compilation in its entirety today.

Perhaps I can relate my findings in an upcoming post.

Now you mention it, I can see dots joining. It's probably a fairly common occurrence throughout the history of music, dating back [at least] to the start of rock and roll.

Greetings Hamiltonians and happy Friday

It's time to get this party started.

This tune came up on my iPod yesterday and, as usual when I hear it, I was struck by how life reaffirming it is. You want bongos? We got bongos. This is quite simply bongotastic...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBBhm...
Incredible Bongo Band - Bongolia

A few days ago I finished reading "The KLF: Chaos, Magic and the Band Who Burned a Million Pounds" by John Higgs which is brilliant and, somewhat inevitably, inspired listening to some music by The KLF.

Here's their most perfect pop moment (and a great video). When Jimmy Cauty, unhappy with the way this track was going, said to Bill Drummond, "This needs some Tammy Wynette", well, the rest is history...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPjgg...
The KLF - Justified and Ancient (Stand By The JAMs)

You want another perfect pop moment. Buddy Rich and his daughter Cathy... What does the beat do?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zblr8...
Buddy Rich - The Beat Goes On

To finish a couple of songs that anyone coming down to the club I DJ at will get to groove to...

"The holiday we spent together, Lives with me now and forever..." What is it about Barney's lyrics that makes them so brilliant? Aligned to New Order's music, they are perfection....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3A8Tp...
New Order - Mr Disco

And finally one of my favourite songs of all time and a punk classic.

You had yellow hair, did you see me?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71s-T...
The Mekons - Where Were You?

Wherever you are and whatever you're doing, I hope you have an enjoyable weekend.

Keep on the good foot.

Time to conjure up that Friday feeling....

Having recently finished "All The Madmen" I've been listening to quite a bit of early Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett. Here's a classic tune from Syd...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cIgt...
Syd Barrett - Gigolo Aunt

I heard this last Saturday night and, as always when it hits, I was blown away by it’s majesty and perfection…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfI1S...
New Order - True Faith

Have you got game? Public Enemy have...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8y_VF...
Public Enemy - He Got Game

Graham Parker was in my local barbers the other week. What a lovely man he is too. Anwyay, here's one of his finest moments...

Graham Parker & The Rumour - Hey Lord Don't Ask Me Questions

And, finally, here's one of many great tracks on the new album by James...

Have a great weekend.

John Williams - Dowland: Earle Of Essex, His Galliard. This is on the first album I bought, I think.

Some of the finest bubblegum pop of all time.

I don't know "Everyone's A Winner" though. I will check it out.

EDIT: That song is much better know in the UK for the version by HOT CHOCOLATE...

I've been enjoying Martin Newell's Mule TV. Here's part two, where from two minutes in, you can hear "The Days Of May", the song that would propel the UK to Eurovision glory were it ever to get sung by a modern day equivalent of Matt Monroe...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVdaZ...
Cleaners From Venus – The Days Of May

I've finally got round to giving the new Real Estate album Atlas" a proper listen. Blimmin' lovely it is too if you dig West Coast dreamy guitar pop. Here's my current favourite tune from "Atlas"...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vk1I...
Real Estate – Past Lives

Another new album that has been getting a serious listen this week is the Teleman album "Breakfast" - another record chock full of top notch tuneage. Here's a low key gem from "Breakfast"...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2x6Om...
Teleman – Lady Low

Every now and again I go on a little Louis Prima binge, and this week has seen one of those periodic Prima binges. Is there anything more life reaffirming that Louis Prima? I adore it all. I'd love to have seen him live. Here's a somewhat restrained performance from the great man of the wonderful "Buona Sera"...

^ Splendid selection Val - appropriate and beautiful

I am thoroughly enjoying the World Cup so far. Plenty of incident and drama and some great games.

Some of these matches are mouthwatering:

Brazil v Chile
Colombia v Uruguay
Holland v Mexico
Costa Rica v Greece
France v Nigeria
Germany v Algeria
Argentina v Switzerland
Belgium v USA

My predictions:

Chile
Colombia
Mexico
Costa Rica
France
Germany
Argentina
Belgium

Feel free to play the pundit too.

What a great game. Amazing tension and drama.

message 391: by Susan (new)

Susan | 272 comments Chile should have won - when they hit the bar, I thought they had done it.

At least neither team could be as bad at penalties as England...

message 392: by Val (last edited Jun 28, 2014 12:56PM) (new)

Val These were my predictions before the group stage:

Group A - Brazil, Mexico
Group B - Netherlands, Spain (it was Netherlands, Chile)
Group C - Colombia, Ivory Coast (it was Colombia, Greece)
Group D - Italy, England (it was Costa Rica, Uruguay)
Group E - France, Switzerland
Group F - Argentina, Nigeria
Group G - Germany, Portugal (it was Germany, USA)
Group H - Belgium, Algeria
I then had all the group winners go on to win their first knock-out round matches. I feared Group D would be Italy, Uruguay, but put England more from loyalty than conviction. I did not expect Costa Rica to do well at all.

This then lined up as:
Germany v France - Germany to win
Brazil v Colombia - Brazil to win
Argentina v Belgium - Argentina to win
Netherlands v Italy - Netherlands to win
I don't think that is significantly changed by Costa Rica replacing Italy, but they are the real 'dark horses' of this tournament.

I then had the two South American teams go on to beat the two European teams and Argentina to break 201,398,858 hearts and win the final.
Neither Brazil or Argentina have looked that convincing however, now I have seen all the teams play, so we might get an all European final (the first when staged outside Europe?), which Germany will go on to win in extra time. (I would like it to be the Netherlands, not because I have anything against Germany, but because Netherlands have made so many finals and semis that it is about time they did win.)

One of those last matches may be the final, the other may be the third place play-off. Both matches will be exciting.

Susan | 272 comments Is it Friday again? I've been listening a lot to Mark Rivera's album, "Common Bond" this week. He is best known as part of Billy Joel's band and for working with Ringo, but this is his first solo effort. ^ ^ ^ I was just marvelling at Val's prescience in her World Cup predictions. Better than my efforts.

Here's my latest picks...

France v Germany
Costa Rica v Holland
Brazil v Colombia
Belgium v Argentina

France (my tips to win it but even a flu-addled Germany might find a way past them)
Holland (will surely have too much for plucky Costa Rica)
Colombia (so long as Brazil don't luck through with dodgy ref decision and/or some outrageous Neymar magic)
Argentina (so long as Messi can produce something)

message 398: by Susan (new)

Susan | 272 comments I am sure I will be totally wrong, but just to be contrary, I say:

Germany
Costa Rica
Brazil
Argentina

Only on the basis that South American teams usually do better when playing on home ground. I would like Belgium and Holland to win.
