Susan | 272 comments That's great Nigeyb. There has been a campaign among Beatles fans for years to get Brian Epstein inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and I was delighted that happened last Thursday. Long overdue.

Was wondering which songs would be everyone's least favourite. I am undecided between "Rotterdam" by the Beautiful South (the most annoying song I have ever heard - I have to leave the room if it plays) or Roxy Music's horrible version of "Jealous Guy". I once threw my radio out of the window when it came on I was so incensed. Any thoughts?

message 302: by Greg (new)

Greg | 159 comments Susan, 'Jealous Guy' is out the window no matter who sings it.

Susan | 272 comments Lol Greg. Well, Bryan Ferry just looks so annoying, then he opens his mouth and it goes really downhill...

message 304: by Greg (new)

Greg | 159 comments Today I was playing a vinyl of Knopfler's soundtrack to Local Hero, which then made me play Steve Miller Band's Sailor album which starts with that fog horn intro of the first track Song For Our Ancestors released 1968 which sounds like Pink Floyd, particularly Wish You Were Here, released 1975.

Also played Van Morrison's 1972 Saint Dominic's Preview. I love Listen To The Lion & I Will Be There

message 305: by Greg (new)

Greg | 159 comments Susan, Bryan Ferry can do no wrong. Listen to what he did with A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall and The Midnight Hour and Eight Miles High.

Susan | 272 comments For me he can do no right, but we can agree to differ :)

No 4-day weekend in heathen Scotland where Easter doesn't merit a holiday, but I do hope that everyone enjoys theirs. We do have sunshine though!

Hey Girl - The Small Faces (came up on iPod shuffle yesterday)
You Can Make Me Dance, Sing or Anything (Even Take the Dog for a Walk, Mend a Fuse, Fold Away the Ironing Board, or Any Other Domestic Shortcomings) - The Faces (for the title, and it's a fab song too)
Mott The Hoople - Roll Away The Stone (since it's Easter)
Pat Benatar - Hit Me With Your Best Shot (just came into my head)
The Faith Brothers - Easter Parade apart from Shipbuilding, the best song written about the Falklands folly?

Enjoy the weekend, however long it lasts.

If It Feels Good Do It.

^ Superb David.

I never realised Scotland didn't have the four day weekend - and that despite living in Glasgow for a year.

At least you've got Sunshine On Leith, and Aberdeen. I imagine the granite is a-glinting and a-glistening.

message 313: by Greg (new)

Greg | 159 comments Greetings from the other side of the world Nigeyb, a beautiful sunny day here also.

Great choices Nigeyb, especially Edwyn Collins. I saw him in Sydney in January at the Sydney Festival. Inspirational. It was wonderful seeing him, his sense of humour and personality shone along with his music.

My Five…..

Kentucky Woman - Deep Purple
Lotta Love To Give - Daniel Lanois
I Need To Wake Up - Pickin' On Series
Let's Stick Together - Bryan Ferry
Cool World - Mondo Rock

I had no idea Edwyn had made it to Sydney, or that we shared a liking of the great man. Double hurrah.

Greg | 159 comments Friday again already, have a good weekend everyone.

Val, that is a great mix. Tiken Jah Fakoly's Franafrique, and Celtas Cortos's Sin papeles are great, really like them.

Here are some old favourites of mine.

50,000 Miles Beneath My Brain - Ten Years After.
Barabajagal - Donovan (with The Jeff Beck Group & Leslie and Madelaine)
Chinatown - Thin Lizzy
Frownland - Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
Caress Me Baby - The Blues Project

Greg | 159 comments Cheers, Nigeyb. Four of you selection are new to me. Fox On The Run I haven't heard for a good while.

Here are five I have been listening to this week.

Then you hop around in the room
In your underwear

Ain't ever bin nothin' quite like this
Come on baby do the Wilbury Twist

Lift your other foot up, fall on your ass
Get back up, put your teeth in a glass

^ I'll let you into a secret Miss M: you can post five songs any day of the week. Many Hamiltonians favour the traditional Friday of the thread's title however, being a tolerant bunch, we are happy to read contributions on any of the week's seven days.

Interesting to see Greg go for George H's version of "Mama, You Been on My Mind". A song written by Bob Dylan after his breakup with Suze Rotolo. It's also a re-examination of the disintegration of monogamy in secular society. Set against a background where suburban housing developments had already begun their slow but inexorable consumption of what is now rather wistfully viewed in retrospect as a kind of lost rurality -an ersatz Elsyium if we must - the denouement of "Mama, You Been on My Mind", for the tragic couple holds a poignancy-in-suspension so unbearable tenuously that it borders, almost upon pathos. It is a masterpiece with its 'golden section' so well concealed that when it is finally revealed to the unsuspecting listener, the effect is akin to being whacked in the face with one of those strange gauntlets, which the elderly drivers of mid 1970s mopeds used for some reason to wear. Perhaps.

Summertime - The Sundays
This world over - XTC
So it goes - Nick Lowe
Georgia - Boz Scaggs
And a hat tip for Cinco de Mayo: Mexican Radio - Wall of Voodoo

message 326: by Greg (last edited May 06, 2014 06:16AM) (new)

Greg | 159 comments Nigeyb, thanks for that on 'Mama, You Been On My Mind'. I am intrigued with the 'golden section' reference, I hadn't considered it regarding it in a song. Could the 'golden section' be the 'bridge' in a song, or is that different?.

The George Harrison version maybe even better than Rod Stewart's version.

message 327: by Nigeyb (new)

Nigeyb | 4546 comments Mod
Sorry Greg, I feel a bit shamefaced now. I just made that stuff up hence the "probably" at the end. I do like the song though - both versions, and slightly favour Rod's.

Thank for your mellow Monday music Miss M - some lovely tunes there, and it's a beautiful Summer day here in southern England.

Greg | 159 comments Last week I bought the five CD album box set of RORY GALLAGHER. The 'Original Album Classics' series.

The albums are DEUCE, CALLING CARD, TOP PRIORITY, JINX, and FRESH EVIDENCE.

I've been working my way through them. Every album is fantastic. Great guitar playing. I never got to see him play live. I feel, from listening to these albums, he would have been incredible to see live in concert.

message 329: by Nigeyb (new)

Nigeyb | 4546 comments Mod
^ RORY GALLAGHER had the reputation as a stellar live performer Greg, that much I do know - I must confess I've never paid him much heed. I'm suspecting I should probably put that right.

On a completely different musical tip, i have been enjoying the lo-fi albums released by Martin Newell as DIY cassettes in the 1980s under his "Cleaners From Venus" moniker. Many of which have been lovingly re-released by NYC's Captured Tracks label. Charming, ramshackle and lovely. There's just so much of it.

And, this very day there's a new Cleaners album "Return To Bohemia" out now....

Return To Bohemia

Released online in May 2014

Recorded on a Tascam Pocketstudio using real musical instruments. Twelve new high quality songs.

Please email Martin to tell him you bought it and donate Six Pounds (GBP) via Paypal and Martin will send you the download link. If you don't hear back in a few hours then email Paul....

^^ "The Drift" TA? I've never got on with modern era Scott despite loving the Walker Brothers and his sixties solo albums. He seems to have drifted into a world where experimentation takes precedence over any kind of listenability. That said, the film, "Scott Walker: 30th Century Man" which charts Scott's journey is absolutely fantastic.

Ok, Hamiltonians, let's celebrate Friday in the only way we know how....

T.A. Epley | 15 comments I discovered an extremely obscure album this week which may have pushed "Pet Sounds" out of my favorite-album-of-all-time slot.

Whether this becomes your favorite album I can't predict, but it certainly would not surprise me. The musical approach is split into thirds, with 33% having an orchestral backing, 33% an acoustic backing, and the final portion having a Rock backing. The theme of the lyrics and the emotional dynamic plant this long player strictly in the tradition of the break-up album. And yes it has more emotional grist for it's mill than any other. "Blood on The Tracks", masterpiece that it is, seems a joke next to the bare bone hysterics of these recriminations. Give the record a listen. If the operatic dynamism of "Time Heals" or the being buried alive cathartic desperation of "Betrayed" fail to elicit a response... check your pulse, you may be dead.

Interesting choice. Sounds like Robyn Hitchcock cutting a glam single. I like it, but it doesn't have (nor was it meant to have) the gravity of the material on "Over".

It really doesn't even sound like the same performer, which only illustrates his range, without even taking his band (Van Der Graaf Generator) into account.

message 341: by Nigeyb (new)

Nigeyb | 4546 comments Mod
^ The always intriguing Head Heritage (home of Saint Julian aka the Arch Drood) supports your assessment of Over by Peter Hammill...

Peter Hammill sorts the men from the boys. Like Dylan, or even more so, you either love or hate his unique voice which veers on the operatic in its tone and dynamism. His unique compositions surpass those of more artistically and commercially renowned names in their structure and innovation. Only the obsessive fan could begin to dig everything he’s put out under the name of his former band and himself. But in a vast back catalogue, ‘Over’ stands out, and I’d recommend it to anyone with a soul and an emotional history. Listen to ‘Over’ and you know you are not alone.

First things first, let's shake some action...

The Flamin' Groovies - Shake Some Action

You want more good rocking? Here's one of the best..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufzRV...

Perfection. Does it get any better? Well, no, but we've got to try though. Here's the late great Mr Bolan...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAw7F...
T. Rex - Chariot Choogle

Here's a band that should have been massive and here's one of my favourite songs that few people know, say hello to Glasgow's finest. Inexplicably this song peaked at number 86 in the UK singles chart...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zh4Y3...
1990s - You're Supposed To Be My Friend

There's a new album out by Fujiya & Miyagi. It's good but there's nothing as good as my favourite song by them...

Val, that's great. I think of the 'Wilbury Twist' dance moves and imagine John Travolta doing the Wilbury Twist in Saturday Night Fever or in Pulp Fiction in the dance contest.

Five For Friday.

Borrowed Tune - Neil Young (from Tonight's The Night live album)
Gone At Last - Paul Simon (from Still Crazy After All These Years)
Roll It Over - Eric Clapton's Rainbow Concert
When The Whip Comes Down - The Rolling Stones (from Some Girls)
Before The Deluge - Jackson Browne (from Late For The Sky)

It doesn't matter how respected some works are, if they just don't click on a personal level. "Selling England by The Pound" by Genesis is another prime example for me.
