Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments Fortieth anniversary remixed Too-Rye-Ay pre-ordered and very much looking forward to it. I draw the line there, though. If our Kev decides the the first album needs a re-mix, I won’t be interested.

Hang on, isn’t it still Thursday?

Agreed Mark - Young Soul Rebels is a bridge too far

Going early this week as I'm MIA for the next few days

David | 1065 comments It’s already been done when the 30th anniversary of its unleashing was celebrated by a digital remaster, was it not?
https://www.discogs.com/release/25534...
That was the year of a huge gathering of the Dexys’ cognoscenti in The Flapper in Birmingham. All but Kevins Rowland and Archer of the original eight-handed desperado gang attended. There was a frank, honest Q&A with the band by the recently-deceased Gavin Martin, and Paolo Hewitt was also there.
Jeff Blythe and Big Jimmy took the stage to be accompanied by Stone Foundation on I Couldn’t Help If I Tried and Tell Me When My Turns Green, the first time that Jim had played in 11 years. It was very emotional. I had been entrusted with transporting Archie Brown’s sax from Darlington to Brum for Jeff to play, and despite having been brought up just 20 miles from Big Jimmy, that was the occasion on which we first met, and we’ve maintained our friendship since. And Yes, We Must Remain The Wild-Hearted Outsiders.

No, remastering and remixing are two incredibly different things, as I’m sure you know. Young Soul Rebels was strictly remastered... unless I’m missing something? I might be...

message 1407: by David (new)

David | 1065 comments I stand corrected.

You over-estimate my knowledge of these things!

I leave it all to the guys with still-intact ears, and generally nod assent when my opinion is sought on anything sonic. My recently-installed hearing aids may help, of course, but generally I’m content to add my part and skedaddle before the techy talk starts.

I see that there’s some sort of live listening party of the revised TRA, and a Q&A with Kev and Jim, in London in October. Tickets are currently on sale.

Some further TRA-related griff here, with a lot of comment. The new version of Old provided sounds not much different to the ‘82 album release to me, personally speaking. I’ll still be buying it, naturally.

message 1422: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Varcoe | 70 comments Objekt sounds a lot like what was once known as dubstep. Can be played at 33, 45, 78 or indeed any rpm.
Too much Croydon, not enough New York City for my tastes.

message 1423: by Nigeyb (last edited Sep 23, 2022 04:11AM) (new)

Nigeyb | 4546 comments Mod
Objekt describes himself thus…

Adventures in machine music built to make subs rattle and feet wiggle; a convoluted mess of elektrology and teknology, 3-step, bass-core, post windmill, proto-minimal wankstep, gondola, shithouse, acid wonk, ambient gabber, no more, no less

We can all get behind that, right?

Bad Apples is a real grower

message 1424: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Varcoe | 70 comments All very tongue-in-cheek perhaps but a few less genres and a little more melody might be nice?
Would it benefit from a repetitive but amusing little bleep maybe?

message 1432: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Varcoe | 70 comments Doesn’t that Richard Berry tune uses the same 2 chords as Louie Louie but in a different combination maybe?
Just yt it and found that he recorded Louie. Was he the first to record it?

message 1433: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Varcoe | 70 comments No it would seem that The Kingsmen recorded it first. Have Love Will Travel is also a wicked tune.

🤠

Given it's a Rastafarian phrase that seems interchangeable with Bredren I would not like to say for sure, but it sounds that way to my ears

Anyone know for sure?

message 1445: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Varcoe | 70 comments I think sistren is a thing, so idren could be gender neutral plural, as in I & I?

message 1446: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Varcoe | 70 comments On a related theme, my eldest daughter pointed out that in Hungarian there are no words for he & she, just ő for both. So they’ve neatly side stepped the issues swirling around personal pronouns.

Fascinating 👏🏼

Sistren is definitely a thing too

message 1448: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Varcoe | 70 comments I listened to that Johnny Osbourne tune fairly recently. I think I’m right that it was one of the first reggae records to be made with software and a laptop rather than in a studio with real instruments.

message 1449: by Nigeyb (new)

Nigeyb | 4546 comments Mod
Yes, a classic early Dancehall track made when digital beats started to emerge into the scene (to the horror of many purists)

message 1450: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Varcoe | 70 comments Count me amongst the purists in that case, or at least I much prefer the full analogue variety. Explains why it was remixed & sampled into a scrillion d&b releases though.
