Shoes by Bobby "Blue" Bland

....which I was listening to earlier this morning and is a bit of a gem

message 1357: by David (new)

David | 1065 comments He’s a master is Bobby.

message 1358: by Mark (new)

Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments David wrote: "He’s a master is Bobby."

The whole entire appeal of a desert island is the complete and total lack of evidence that humanity exists, but if I ever get so lucky, and am somehow forced to play by the rules, Bobby’s Two Steps From The Blues album would be right by my side. Worth the cost of admission for ‘Little Boy Blue’ alone. Masterful.

message 1359: by David (new)

David | 1065 comments The planets align. Although it’s a bit of a struggle (Primal Scream just too late for me to know well enough), I’m just about through Bobby Gillespie’s memoir ‘Tenement Kid’. Mere minutes after reading Mark’s appreciation of Mr Bland, I turned the page and found this:

“I was enraptured by artists such as Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland. His classic ‘Two Steps From The Blues’ album is a perfect example of elegant blues songwriting, musicianship and intense, restrained vocalising. Bland’s phrasing is up there with Sinatra in my mind; both master storytellers of noir-pop-bed-chamber blues and adult existentialism. When Bobby sings, ‘I know how it feels to be a stranger in a strange land’, it feels like you are listening to the loneliest sound in the world. True blues from a troubled soul who’s seen it all and suffered far too much. His voice is battered, weathered and weary. Bobby always sang songs of experience, his manliness unbowed and righteous in its defiance of an unfair, unkind and uncaring world. Have there ever been truer words sung than ‘Ain’t no love in the heart of the city’? Check out Bobby Bland’s 1974 pop soul classic and hear his majesty for yourself”.
(Bobby Gillespie: Tenement Kid p312)

That's wonderful David

Thanks for sharing that

message 1361: by Mark (new)

Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments I’m not at all familiar with Bobby Gillespie’s various doings after Psychocandy, but I can’t really argue with anything that you’d quoted him as having written. It’s a classic album despite seldom being acknowledged as such -- Bland seems to have slipped away from the massive credit that his works deserve, and that album sits right at the top of my list.

Little Walter - Walkin’ By Myself https://youtu.be/9EhXYWoeGjk

Clifford Brown - The Blues Walk https://youtu.be/mlHCo0I-e6g

Bob Wills - My Shoes Keep Walking Back To You - https://youtu.be/l3qU2TmIGyA

The Humblebums - Steamboat Row https://youtu.be/lNSwuf40Zg0

The James Gang - Walk Away https://youtu.be/Z9Fo5uEEqsY

It was summer 2007 in Berlin, and we had need to go online to obtain daughter #2’s exam results. The nearest internet café in Mitte was in the Fat Tire Bike Co’s hire facility in the base of the former DDR’s Fehrenseturm, the telecoms mast that dominates the city. As Kirsten wrestled with the dial-up connection, I looked around the FTBC’s operation, of great interest to an urban cyclist. To my horror, on the wall was pinned “OUR MISSION STATEMENT”. What disappointment - a young, vibrant co-operative, promoting active travel in a lively re-generating European city, embracing the awful capitalist corporatism that I was working to have removed from public education establishments back home?
Then I moved closer and read the content :
“WALKING IS STUPID”. A three-word epigram demolishing the corporate bollocks entirely. Chapeau, young Berliners, chapeau.
I still enjoy an extended trundle each day though.

I'm with you David

A dog demands a couple of chunky walks each day and it's a joy, although in his dotage he's less keen if it's raining or even damp.

As you flaneurs are wont to say...

Do The Walk

message 1370: by David (new)

David | 1065 comments Walking the elder inheritor’s two dogs when she visits is a delight, and I even leave the in-ears at home, in the hope that one of them will engage me in conversation and suggest we go for a pint in The Black Dog en route. The older of the pair is still as sprightly as ever at 11, although he’s on monthly chemo and borrowed time. I’ll miss Iggy (as in Iggy pup when he was little - proving that they are immaculately-raised children) when he has to go. :(

David | 1065 comments Morning, April people, and to those in the UK, switch off all appliances on standby, wear an extra layer, and report sightings of any burglars in striped jerseys and attaché cases marked ‘SWAG’, as there are reports of a new crime wave perpetrated by energy suppliers. Suitably-themed, we have…

Tell me about it David

Luckily our overlords here in England are attuned to the levels of suffering and have done all they can to help the most needy

We've had the heating off for weeks and right now it's flipping chilly - though daresay Aberdeen residents might describe it as balmy

Stay warm and thanks for the picks

David | 1065 comments The signal’s not too reliable here on Loch Long where we’re chilling for the week, so contributing would take forever when I’ve got stones to skim, and The Creggan Arms to keep in business. The Ruts though - a terrific band, still touring. My favourite-ever Dave Ruffy moment is at 2.58 here. The Dexys’ website during the 2012 tour advised attendees to “look good, Dexys will”. I think Dave’s tie in the video took things just a little too far.

Apologies if this takes a week to arrive from a far-flung corner of the republic.
