Footage of 1969’s Harlem Cultural Festival aired at last – it’s been worth the wait. Opening with Stevie Wonder’s thunderous Drum Solo is a sign that what follows will be transcendent. Shot at 1969’s Harlem Cultural Festival – often called “the Black Woodstock” and here subtitled “Or, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised” – this masterpiece is the urban equivalent of that other 1960s landmark. In his directorial debut, musician Questlove has created an unequalled ode to the wildly eclectic black music of the era. His editing is brisk, but subtly nuanced. To see David Ruffin, Gladys Knight & The Pips (soul), Sly & The Family Stone (funk), B.B. King (blues), The Staple Singers (gospel), Abbey Lincoln/Max Roach (jazz) and more in their prime is a joy. Other highlights are Mavis Staples and Mahalia Jackson duetting and the regal, radiant Nina Simone on her A-game. That this footage could get no buyers for a half-century is maddening. Attendees are shown while watching the footage now, weeping for joy and perhaps a dream deferred.

In Kevin Rowland’s words, “Pure. Precious. Worth having”.Of all the gigs I have attended since 1972, Kid Creole and the Coconuts (I attended only because there was a spare ticket available) was unexpectedly among the best. Probably around 1983.
August asked for some audience participation. When he sang “Aaah” the women in the audience had to respond “Ooooh”, and when the magnificent Coconuts sang “Ooooh”, we fellas had to sing “Aaah”. It went well, but August led the band circuitously into some other arrangement, and the participation was forgotten. As the obvious coda approached, August asked of the Coconuts, “Say, whadda you Coconuts think ‘bout that?”
The resulting “Ooooooh” was a Pavlovian trigger for a spontaneous “Aaaaah” from even we cool guys down on such naked populism. Ronnie could do that too. Every time
